The Effects Of Defendant Remorse On Mock Juror Decisions In A Malpractice Case, Brian H. Bornstein, Lahna M. Rung M.A., Monica K. Miller
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of defendant remorse on monetary damages awarded to a plaintiff in a malpractice case. In two experiments, the physician-defendant expressed remorse at the time of the incident and again at trial, expressed remorse at trial, explicitly demonstrated a lack of remorse at trial, or made no mention of remorse (or a lack thereof). Participants decided how much money to award to the plaintiff and evaluated both the plaintiff and the defendant on several dimensions. Participants awarded greater compensation when the physician expressed remorse at the time of the incident than …

13th Annual Idaho Public Policy Survey, J. E. Gonzalez
Annual Idaho Public Policy Surveys
Annually, the Social Science Research Center at Boise State University conducts a large-scale survey of Idahoans, for use in identifying public policy concerns. This document is the primary vehicle for disseminating the results of the survey to Idaho citizens, to those individuals that participated in the survey; and to others that are interested in Idaho matters, such as state decision-makers and state agency heads.
This document reports the policy issues as identified by survey respondents, and makes no attempt to attach meaning to the findings. When available and appropriate, multi-year trend data and regional comparison of responses are presented.

A Description Of Female, Adult Recreational Drug Users: A Sub-Analysis Of The Drugnet Survey, Leslie Bickett
A Description Of Female, Adult Recreational Drug Users: A Sub-Analysis Of The Drugnet Survey, Leslie Bickett
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Drug abuse can be a serious, chronic, and relapsing health problem for both men and women. Among women, however, drug use and abuse present an array of different challenges to health and well-being. In addition, the health of women has been given less attention than the health of men. Little research has been conducted to identify and describe the invisible or hidden population of drug users, not abusers, who are not in treatment or incarcerated on drugrelated charges. The purpose of this study is to provide a descriptive and behavioral profile of adult, female, recreational drug users (i.e., not abusers). …

Countries going through democratic transition have to address how they will deal with the human rights crimes committed during the authoritarian era. In the context of amnesty for perpetrators, truth commissions have emerged as a standard institution to document the violent past. Increasingly, claims are made that truth commissions have beneficial psychological consequences; that is, that they facilitate 'catharsis', or 'heal the nation', or allow the nation to 'work through' a violent past. This article draws upon trauma counseling experience and anthropological fieldwork among survivors to challenge these claims in the context of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. …

Words Without Meaning: The Constitution, Confessions, And Mentally Retarded Suspects, Morgan Cloud, George B. Shepherd, Alison Nodvin Barkoff, Justin V. Shur
University of Chicago Law Review
The Supreme Court's Miranda decision rested upon the unverified assumptions that suspects who received the now-famous warnings not only would possess information ensuring that subsequent waivers were "knowing and intelligent," but also would possess the tools necessary to resist the pressures inherent in custodial interrogation, thus ensuring that confessions were "voluntary." The flaws in these assumptions are exposed when they are applied to mentally retarded people. The authors of this Article tested a sample of mentally retarded individuals to determine if they could understand the Miranda warnings, then compared these results to those obtained for a control group of nondisabled …
