Scale And Orientation-Invariant Scene Similarity Metrics For Image Queries, James Carswell Jan 2002

Scale And Orientation-Invariant Scene Similarity Metrics For Image Queries, James Carswell

Articles

In this paper we extend our previous work on shape-based queries to support queries on configurations of image objects. Here we consider spatial reasoning, especially directional and metric object relationships. Existing models for spatial reasoning tend to rely on pre-identified cardinal directions and minimal scale variations, assumption that cannot be considered as given in our image applications, where orientations and scale may vary substantially, and are often unknown. Accordingly, we have developed the method of varying baselines to identify similarities in direction and distance relations. Our method allows us to evaluate directional similarities without a priori knowledge of cardinal directions, …

Critical Creativity: On The Convergence Of Medium Education And Media Education, Michael J. Emme Jan 2002

Critical Creativity: On The Convergence Of Medium Education And Media Education, Michael J. Emme

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Days after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in the United States I heard an interview on the radio. The short exchange, with peace educator and activist Johan Galtung, not surprisingly in light of world events, focused on conflict resolution. While I was impressed by professor Galtung's commitment to peacemaking and his real experience serving as a mediator in world conflicts, what struck me most was the word he used to describe the key ingredient in conflict resolution. That word was 'creativity'. As an artist, art educator, academic and parent I suppose it makes sense that …

Proceedings Of The Design Research Society International Conference, 2002: Common Ground, David Durling, John Shackleton

DRS Conference Volumes

The theme for the 2002 DRS conference was 'Common Ground'. The aim was to bring together many of the sub disciplines and sub-groups of the design research community - to present current work, to explore areas of common interest, to connect, to argue, to integrate, and to celebrate both the commonality and the diversity of our shared interests and strengths. The larger purpose is to take a significant step forward and endorse the new maturity of our international, interdisciplinary community.

Address Code And Arithmetic Optimizations For Embedded Systems, J. Ramanujam, S. Krishnamurthy, J. Hong, M. Kandemir Jan 2002

Address Code And Arithmetic Optimizations For Embedded Systems, J. Ramanujam, S. Krishnamurthy, J. Hong, M. Kandemir

Faculty Publications

An important class of problems used widely in both the embedded systems and scientific domains perform memory intensive computations on large data sets. These data sets get to be typically stored in main memory, which means that the compiler needs to generate the address of a memory location in order to store these data elements and generate the same address again when they are subsequently retrieved. This memory address computation is quite expensive, and if it is not performed efficiently, the performance degrades significantly. In this paper, we have developed a new compiler approach for optimizing the memory performance of …

Chronophobia: Doing Time, Rosemary Stoltz Hill Jan 2002

Chronophobia: Doing Time, Rosemary Stoltz Hill

LSU Master's Theses

Chronophobia is the fear of time—characterized by panic, anxiety, and claustrophobia. Also known as prison neurosis, it may be the most common anxiety disorder in prison inmates. Sooner or later, almost all prisoners suffer chronophobia to some degree and become terrified by the duration and immensity of time. This is often called going “stir crazy.” The work in this installation subjectively explores interpretations of the passage of time through various multimedia experiences. Interactivity is a key feature of several installation components. There is also limited use of traditional print media graphics. References to time in music, literature and film are …

Communication Of Position In Current National Primetime Brand Advertising: A Content Analysis., Chad Matthew Mezera Jan 2002

Communication Of Position In Current National Primetime Brand Advertising: A Content Analysis., Chad Matthew Mezera

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Study examines communication of brand position in current national brand advertising on the four network stations during primetime programming. Content analysis of a random sample of advertising executions was performed on the premise that evaluation of said executions should be performed on the basis of cues provided by the execution to the viewer. Coded results are provided and analyzed. Brand position, as applied to communication in television commercials, is defined and explored.

Modeling Image Databases Using Xml Schema, Min Xu Jan 2002

Modeling Image Databases Using Xml Schema, Min Xu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a model for still images in order to support content-based querying and browsing by hierarchical tree structures and object relational graphs. We use the extensible markup language (XML) schema to illustrate and exemplify the proposed model because of its interoperability and flexibility advantages. Of primary interest is the notion of complex types and referential integrity to fully describe the physical and semantic properties of images. XQuery is used to support query processing. We further show how these complex types of XML schema can be used to overcome the shortcomings of reported image database descriptions in the literature.

Calvin Klein: Semiotic Phenomenology, Stephanie L. Crase-Moritz Jan 2002

Calvin Klein: Semiotic Phenomenology, Stephanie L. Crase-Moritz

Masters Theses

This study examined print advertising as a visual communication method by focusing on five of Calvin Klein's jeans advertisements and the themes that are expressed to determine what realities or social meanings Calvin Klein's jeans advertisements constructed and/or reflected. To uncover the themes within Klein's advertisements, the following three-methods were applied: Content Analysis, Informal Focus Group and Semiotic Phenomenology. Together the three-methods, based upon data collected from fourteen males and females aged 13-18, 19-21, 22-24 and 28 years old or above, identified fifteen underlying themes containing stereotypes, potentially dangerous realities and evidence showing our desensitization to controversy and shocking images …
