Folding, Blending And Implicate Order: Reconceptualisation In Design Education, A. Howe, P. Dillon Sep 2002

Folding, Blending And Implicate Order: Reconceptualisation In Design Education, A. Howe, P. Dillon

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this paper we consider some of the rich body of work of the mathematician, quantum physicist and thinker David Bohm. Bohm’s ideas have both direct and tangential relevance to design. We review Bohm’s notions of implicate and explicate order as metaphors for the totality of design and the relationship of its parts. There are parallels with initial inception and then realisation through the subsequent stages of design. If one starts with Bohm’s position that the universe has an implicate order, then design is one way of unfolding that order to make it explicate. Design ideas are enfolded around us …

The Importance Of Explaining Industrial Design Diversity, L. Justice Sep 2002

The Importance Of Explaining Industrial Design Diversity, L. Justice

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Clients in industry who come from disciplines other than design often experience deep frustration when working with or hiring industrial designers because they are not aware of the diversity in the field. Their frustration is understandable because designers themselves do not explain the diversity well and present themselves as generalists who can solve any problem. The real issue is that all designers cannot solve any problem and the word “research” has become as vague as the word “design”. In addition, some designers are wonderfully self-expressive and produce passionate designs and other designers produce wonderfully analytical solutions to complex problems. But …

Generations In Design Methodology, J. Broadbent Sep 2002

Generations In Design Methodology, J. Broadbent

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The relationship between design and science is examined through the lens of design methodology. The purpose is to foresee the next generation of design methodology and its attributes. Four generations in design methodology are recognized – craft, design-by-drawing, hard systems methods and soft systems methods – and each is characterized in terms of its benefits and limitations in respect of design practice. To the extent that each new generation overlays the preceding one, a system of design methodologies is created which, being more inclusive of the real world, should be increasingly useful to design practice. The change process between generations …

The Use Of The Internet By Architectural Practices In The Uk, M. Fedeski, B. Sidawi Sep 2002

The Use Of The Internet By Architectural Practices In The Uk, M. Fedeski, B. Sidawi

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Since its evolution in 1962, the Internet has provided new services for people and enriched their life and knowledge. Earlier research has shown that the architectural profession in the UK has lagged behind other businesses in adopting and using new technologies and is only slowly absorbing the new innovations brought by the Internet. This lag coincides with a slip in the architect's lead role in the design team. The research conducted at Cardiff University aims to examine how architectural practices are interacting with the Internet and to investigate any problems they are having in its use. Architectural practices in the …

An Indian Who Doesn’T Know How To Grow The Maize, S. Boess, D. Durling, C. Lebbon, C. Maggs

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In user-centred design, a common ground that emerges is an orientation towards research into the needs and wishes of consumers. Hermeneutic phenomenology can be adopted by a designer to investigate her/his own activity and use of knowledge in designing. A reflection of this kind is presented here. It is based on design and research activities in the domain of product design, in which the realization of user-centred design was sought by means of preliminary user research, application of its results in design work, and evaluation of the outcomes through renewed user research. The outcome of the reflection is the formulation …

Using Visual Communication Resource Shifts To Inform Cmc Design, C.-D. Chen, S. A. R. Scrivener, A. Woodcock Sep 2002

Using Visual Communication Resource Shifts To Inform Cmc Design, C.-D. Chen, S. A. R. Scrivener, A. Woodcock

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Talking about and with things is characteristic of design communication. In this paper we are concerned with how to design computer-mediated communication (CMC) systems that support such talk between designers separated by distance. We describe a design method based on Scrivener’s (2002) postulate that users in a communication environment satisfy communication purpose by selecting, from the resources available to them, that most appropriate for communication purpose. A method for enhancing the overall utility of a given CMC environment is described where analysis of the shifts between resources reveals insight into their relative strengths and weaknesses which is then used to …

Remote Usability Testing For Information Appliances Through Www - With The Emphasis On The Development Of Tools, K-P. Lee Sep 2002

Remote Usability Testing For Information Appliances Through Www - With The Emphasis On The Development Of Tools, K-P. Lee

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As the importance of interface design in information appliances became recognized, usability testing has been widely introduced. However usability testing in the environment of a closed laboratory has been known to cause some significant difficulties: cost, time, unnatural environment, and lack of opportunity for idea generation. The goal of this study is to propose the new prototype of tool for ‘remote usability testing for information appliances through World Wide Web’. At first, existing usability testing methods for information appliances are reviewed to identify major problems. Based on the problems of existing usability testing, the concept of remote usability testing through …

Verbal Language And Sketching, T. Y. Pan, R. M. Newman, S. Porter, M. Tovey Sep 2002

Verbal Language And Sketching, T. Y. Pan, R. M. Newman, S. Porter, M. Tovey

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper attempts to identify designers’ sketches in different forms for a classification system by use of verbal language. Designers have a creative vocabulary, which has rich meanings in design communication. This study was carried out with the cooperation of 11 academic staff in the domain of industrial design. It was concluded that none of verbal language was found descriptive enough for the purpose of separating sketches into different forms to support a classification system. While this study has not produced a possible means for classification of sketches using verbal language, the methodology employed has proved interesting for future investigative …

Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell Sep 2002

Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell

Conference papers

The amount and availability of high-quality geo-spatial image data, such as digital satellite and aerial photographs, is increasing dramatically. Task-based management of such visual information and associated knowledge is a central concern for organisations that rely on digital imagery. We are developing geo-spatial knowledge management techniques that employ case-based reasoning as the core methodology. In order to provide effective retrieval of task-based experiences that center around geo-spatial imagery, we need to forward novel similarity metrics for directly comparing the image components of experience cases. Based on work in geo-spatial image database retrieval, we are building an effective similarity metric for …

Testing Homogeneous Spreadsheet Grids With The “What You See Is What You Test” Methodology, Margaret Burnett, Andrei Sheretov, Gregg Rothermel Jun 2002

Testing Homogeneous Spreadsheet Grids With The “What You See Is What You Test” Methodology, Margaret Burnett, Andrei Sheretov, Gregg Rothermel

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Although there has been recent research into ways to design environments that enable end users to create their own programs, little attention has been given to helping these end users systematically test their programs. To help address this need in spreadsheet systems - the most widely used type of end-user programming language - we previously introduced a visual approach to systematically testing individual cells in spreadsheet systems. However, the previous approach did not scale well in the presence of largely homogeneous grids, which introduce problems somewhat analogous to the array-testing problems of imperative programs. In this paper, we present two …

Door-To-Door Mobility: Evaluating A Bus Rapid Transit Community Transport Concept, Matthew Pahs, Mark Rohden, David Hampsten, Seth Gallant, Robert L. Bertini Jun 2002

Door-To-Door Mobility: Evaluating A Bus Rapid Transit Community Transport Concept, Matthew Pahs, Mark Rohden, David Hampsten, Seth Gallant, Robert L. Bertini

Journal of Public Transportation

Portland, Oregon’s regional government, Metro, has designated specific communities in outer Southeast Portland as areas that should be planned to accommodate future population growth. Both Metro and the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (Tri-Met) have expressed a desire for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service to this area from downtown Portland, within a corridor approximately following Southeast Powell Boulevard and Foster Road. A preliminary analysis of BRT alignment alternatives was completed for this study. After six possible alignment options linking downtown Portland with Pleasant Valley and Damascus Town Centers were identified, a multivariate corridor analysis was applied to each option. …

Detection Of Knots In The Logs Using Finite Element Analysis, Satya Prakash Bikkina May 2002

Detection Of Knots In The Logs Using Finite Element Analysis, Satya Prakash Bikkina

Theses and Dissertations

The detection of internal log defects has been shown to have a potential for increasing the lumber value. As an alternative to other available expensive log scanning devices, a method using radio frequency waves has been used to detect the knots. The main focus of the current research is to investigate the effectiveness of using radio frequency waves to detect the knots. Electrostatic finite element analysis is performed to predict the defects in logs. A script has been written using the commercial finite element ANSYS software to predict defects in log sections. The results are then compared with the experimental …
