Integrating Hiv Prevention And Care Into Maternal And Child Health Care Settings: Lessons Learned From Horizons Studies, Naomi Rutenberg, Sam Kalibala, Charles Mwai, James Rosen

HIV and AIDS

Many women in the developing world still lack access to high-quality HIV/AIDS prevention and care services. To address this problem, Horizons has undertaken a range of operations research efforts that examine the integration of HIV-related care in the maternal-child health setting. At a workshop held in Kenya in July 2001, participants discussed the experience to date and formulated practical strategies for improving the integration. This consultation report summarizes that discussion according to the following seven key program components: Training and Motivation to Improve the Performance of Health Workers; Supervision of HIV Services and Quality Assurance of HIV Testing; Caring for …

The Precautionary Principle And Marine Environmental Protection: Slippery Shores, Rough Seas, And Rising Normative Tides, David Vanderzwaag

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Law and policy implications of the precautionary principle in the field of marine environmental protection are explored in this paper in a three-part analysis. First, seven slippery aspects of the precautionary principle are highlighted, including confusion in terminology, definitional variations, definitional generalities, the spectrum of precautionary measures available, ongoing philosophical tensions and competing socioeconomic interests, debate over who should be responsible for making precautionary decisions, and limited interpretation by international tribunals. Second, the rather feeble precautionary responses to the tempestuous issues of climate change, hazardous chemicals, and overfishing are described. Third, the potential for the precautionary principle to synergize with …

Environmental Justice In An Era Of Devolved Collaboration , Sheila R. Foster Jan 2002

Environmental Justice In An Era Of Devolved Collaboration , Sheila R. Foster

Faculty Scholarship

Environmental decision-making is undergoing a profound shift. Traditional forums and processes are being displaced by mechanisms emphasizing local, "place-based" decision-making. These emerging decision-making mechanisms are orchestrated through collaborative processes featuring stakeholders from both the public and private sectors. This transformation is evident in a number of recent governmental initiatives, including those by the Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA"), most notably its Community-Based Environmental Protection ("CBEP") initiative. Other federal agencies, particularly those with land or species management responsibilities, have similarly advocated a greater role for local decision-makers and collaborative problem-solving. This Article examines the points of convergence and divergence between devolved collaboration …

Consortia And Institutional Partnerships For Community Development, Mitchell R. Williams Jan 2002

Consortia And Institutional Partnerships For Community Development, Mitchell R. Williams

Special Topics, General

The need for effective community development to address social, economic, and environmental issues is perhaps stronger now than at any other time. Making communities functional and livable is critically important to our society. There is a renewed interest in using the resources of higher education to assist communities and regions through community development initiatives (Livermore and Midgley, 1998; Usnick, Shove, and Gissy, 1997), To illustrate the contribution of colleges and universities to building sustainable communities, this chapter examines the development of community leaders through institutional partnerships and consortia involving different types of institutions of higher education.

Conceptualizing The Field After September 11th: Forward To A Symposium On Public Health Law, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Safeguarding the public's health, safety, and security took on new meaning and urgency after the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001. On October 4, 2001, a Florida man named Robert Stevens was diagnosed with inhalational anthrax. The intentional dispersal of anthrax through the U.S. postal system in New York, Washington, Pennsylvania and other locations resulted in at least five deaths, hundreds treated, and thousands tested. The prospects of new, larger, and more sophisticated attacks have created a sense of deep vulnerability. The need to rapidly detect and …

The purpose of this study was to investigate children's books and determine if they are portraying agricultural changes over the last 100 years, and whether the different revolutions of farming (horse, tractor, and technology) and alternative methods of farming are being represented.

The population of books examined were picture books, juvenile fiction, and informational books appropriate for K-6th grade. The population was limited to books published between 1982-2002, the United States as the geographical setting, and the main focus of the story was a farm setting. This project describes the sport of disc golf to introduce the principal concepts for those who may be unfamiliar with the sport. In the United States, The President's Council on …

Green Mapping Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island: A Community Sustainabilty Assessment, Andrea Mcneill Underwood Jan 2002

Green Mapping Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island: A Community Sustainabilty Assessment, Andrea Mcneill Underwood

Open Access Master's Theses

Sustainability, while it is a global movement, is not well understood by the public. The main goals of this project were to develop a process to educate community residents in Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island about sustainability across scales (local, state, region, nation and beyond) and to help a community to create a definition and vision of sustainability locally.

Two main tools were used. First, a series of workshops was organized to teach a community group about sustainability and to suggest ways in which it might apply to their own community. Second, a Green Mapping system was used to develop a …

A Case Study Of Sustainable Development: Brownfields, Joel B. Eisen Jan 2002

A Case Study Of Sustainable Development: Brownfields, Joel B. Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

Critiquing how brownfields programs expanded without much attention to developments in the international environmental arena will illustrate some ways to alter them to comport with Agenda 21 and other prerequisites for sustainable development. Another interesting aspect of this analysis for the Rio + 10 review is its timing. The state and federal programs have mushroomed since 1992; for example, while a small minority of states had "voluntary cleanup programs" 10 years ago, virtually every state has one now, and there is considerable and increasing experience with them. If adjustments to these programs should be developed to comport with the prescriptions …

The Economic Role Of West Virginia's Food Systems In A Globalized Economic Environment., Sangnyeol Jung

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The structure of West Virginia’s food systems is analyzed within the context of a changing structure of the U.S. and global food systems. Further, the economic role of food systems in West Virginia is investigated both at the state and an industry level using a combination of a descriptive analysis and an impact analysis. ARCVIEW is used for mapping in the descriptive analysis. The impact analysis is done using an input-output model. The descriptive analysis by itself cannot be used to draw definitive conclusions regarding the role of West Virginia’s food systems; thus, in addition to the descriptive analysis, an …

Lawyers And The Practice Of Workplace Equity, Susan Sturm Jan 2002

Lawyers And The Practice Of Workplace Equity, Susan Sturm

Faculty Scholarship

Lawyers involved in the pursuit of workplace equity are difficult to pigeon-hole. Of course, the practice of many employment lawyers conforms to conventional understandings of lawyers' roles. These lawyers litigate cases on behalf of management or employees, advise clients about their legal rights and obligations, and define their mission as avoiding liability or winning battles in court. But innovators have crafted interesting and dynamic roles that transcend the traditional paradigm. These innovators connect law, as it is traditionally understood, to the resolution of the underlying problems that create and maintain workplace inequity. Civil rights lawyers working in both public and private …
