Environmental Work And Peace Work: The Palestinian-Israeli Case, Julia Chaitin, Fida Obeidi, Sami Adwan, Dan Bar-On
Peace and Conflict Studies
This paper, based on a larger study that was carried out by a joint Palestinian – Israeli research team before and during the Al Aqsa Intifada, examines Israeli and Palestinian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that have worked on joint environmental projects. We focus here on three jointly run Palestinian – Israeli NGOs, 16 Israeli organizations and 12 Palestinian organizations that engaged in cooperative work, looking at the kind of work they did, their perceptions of the causes of environmental damage and its connection to the conflict, their perceptions of the roles of NGOs within their societies, and obstacles encountered in cooperative …

Urban Regionalism And Smart Growth: The Oakland/San Leandro Example, Elizabeth Ruess Greene

This planning report addresses the topic of regional collaboration and examines its latest iteration, which is known as smart growth. Smart growth efforts focus on restoring the urban core as a key component to revitalizing a region. An example of one such collaboration, the Oakland/San Leandro Joint Revitalization Plan, is evaluated to determine how effective an urban partnership can be and what this means for smart growth.
Research on this subject revealed that the successful elements of the Oakland-San Leandro project have a jurisdiction or community group which recognizes a direct benefit and champions its cause. To help ensure the …

Who Will Empower The Better Half? Social Dynamics In Operation, Debabrata Lahiri, Santanu Mitra

In a game theoretic framework it can be argued that a gender sensitive institution is an offshoot of certain social conditions, which in most cases need to be acted upon by some anti-establishment catalytic agent. Given the fact that among about half of the population there is a need for such an institution, the main function of a catalytic agent is to engineer a conversion of that need into an active demand. In a society characterized by gender exploitation, catalytic agent can only come exogenously. For a sub-society it is easier to come across such an exogenous catalytic agent. The …
