The Challenge Facing Parents And Coaches In Youth Sports: Assuring Children Fun And Equal Opportunity, Douglas E. Abrams Jan 2002

The Challenge Facing Parents And Coaches In Youth Sports: Assuring Children Fun And Equal Opportunity, Douglas E. Abrams

Faculty Publications

Youth sports today brings both good and bad news. The good news is that organized sports programs enhance the vitality of communities large and small because twenty-five to thirty million children, nearly half of all American youngsters, join at least one program in any given year. At some time during their childhood and adolescence, nearly all children have some experience with organized sports. Outside the home and schools, no other activity reaches so many children from coast to coast.

Developing An Intelligent User Manager System For Controlling Smart School Network Resources, Abdullah Gani, H. Mouratidis, N.S. Abouzakhar, G.A. Manson Jan 2002

Developing An Intelligent User Manager System For Controlling Smart School Network Resources, Abdullah Gani, H. Mouratidis, N.S. Abouzakhar, G.A. Manson

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper presents an Intelligent User Manager System (UMAS) for controlling access to network resources in a Smart School network. Network resources, especially in a Smart School, are in short supply and relatively expensive to acquire, therefore a control mechanism should be in place so that available resources can be allocated for legitimate usages only. An intelligent mechanism using Fuzzy Logic is deployed for the purpose of knowledge learning in order to process all the user requests accordingly. A decision of granting a network resource request needs to be based on several data sets that represent the current network state, …

Using Evaluations To Break Down The Male Corporate Hierarchy: A Full Circle Approach, Edward Adams

Articles

This Article explores full circle evaluations in detail, arguing that corporate boards should implement such systems. Part I details full circle evaluations and explains the benefits associated with the use of such systems. Part II describes the potential legal duty to implement full circle evaluation systems. Part III argues that full circle evaluations consider the input of all persons in the corporation, thereby increasing the extent to which decisions concerning promotions are based on objective factors of merit and facilitating the advancement of women in the workplace. Part IV concludes that in light of all of the aforementioned considerations, the …

Gender Differences In The Frequency Of And Associated Arousal To Romantic And Sexual Fantasies, Jonathan A. Eldredge Jan 2002

Gender Differences In The Frequency Of And Associated Arousal To Romantic And Sexual Fantasies, Jonathan A. Eldredge

Whittier Scholars Program

Romantic fantasies have been an untapped area in research on sexual behavior. The current study sought to study gender differences in romantic and sexual fantasy frequencies, and to discover the sexual arousal associated with both. It was also designed to discover factors that may be correlated with romantic and sexual fantasy frequencies (e.g., religiosity, ethnicity, sexual behavior, etc.) The current study did find significant differences between males and females in romantic and sexual fantasy frequency, and in the associated arousal to these fantasies. Males reported more sexual fantasies than females did, but there was no difference in romantic fantasy frequency. …

Institusi Gereja Semasa Penjajahan Sepanyol Di Filipina : Antara Penyebaran Agama Kristian Dan Campur Tangan Dalam Politik Serta Ekonomi, Thanaraj Gopal

Student Works (2000-2009)

One of the basic aims of the Spanish empire was to spread the Christian faith in its colonies. In the Philippines, this materialized with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and its subsequent colonization by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1565. The regular clergies known as friars were responsible in imparting the Christian faith to the locals who absorbed the new faith wholly, albeit, preserving their traditional beliefs to a certain extent. Though Christianiation was successful, the secularization process whereby parishes were to be handed to the secular clergies was denied. This failure had a Jong lasting effect which …

Changing Tides And Changing Focus: Mapping The Challenges And Successes Of One State's Implementation Of The Adoption And Safe Families Act Of 1997, Scottye J. Cash, Scott D. Ryan, Alison Glover Jan 2002

Changing Tides And Changing Focus: Mapping The Challenges And Successes Of One State's Implementation Of The Adoption And Safe Families Act Of 1997, Scottye J. Cash, Scott D. Ryan, Alison Glover

Journal of Family Strengths

In 1997, the Adoption and Safe Families Act shifted from the preservation of families to an emphasis on safety, permanency, and well-being through expediting the termination of parental rights, establishing exceptions to the reasonable efforts clause of preserving the family, and fiscal incentives for finalizing adoptions. The current project assessed the role of a full service array in achieving the outcomes set forth in ASF A. Concept mapping was utilized to elicit information from participants (both urban and rural) regarding the identified research question. Participants recognized family preservation versus safety, community connections, mandates versus reality, and worker recruitment and retention …

Media And Religion, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2002

Media And Religion, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

This survey will examine three broad strands of communication research on media and religion. First, it will review some emerging frameworks for studying media and religion and see how current scholars situate the topic. Second, it will look at how people have studied the relation of different media to religion, focusing on journalism (especially the coverage of religion), the entertainment media (both the content and the critique), and the information media (primarily the Internet). Finally, this survey will examine the Christian reflection on media, occurring in what some term Communication Theology (Plude 2001: 3).

Covering, Kenji Yoshino Jan 2002

Covering, Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

This article considers how the gay civil rights movement might enrich an American civil rights discourse predicated on the paradigm classifications of race and sex. It posits that gays may be able to contribute a more robust theory of the relationship between assimilation and discrimination, a theory which takes assimilation to be an effect of discrimination as well as an evasion from it. The article maintains that gays may be more attuned to the discriminatory aspects of assimilation because they are capable of assimilating in more ways than racial minorities or women. Either in fact or in the imagination of …

Framing Transactions In Constitutional Law, Daryl J. Levinson Jan 2002

Framing Transactions In Constitutional Law, Daryl J. Levinson

Faculty Articles

Common law rules and adjudication are structured around discrete transactions between strangers. The prevailing, classically liberal, model of tort, contract, and property cases features atomistic individuals, otherwise independent from one another, who interact only at the point of a discontinuous event, sharply limited in space and time. In the paradigmatic case of a tortious collision or contract breach, the unit of legal analysis, or transaction, ordinarily seems self-evident: it is simply the self-contained, harm-causing interaction that disrupted the otherwise unrelated lives of the two parties. The focus of adjudication is on the marginal deviation from the position or welfare of …

A Defense Of Empirical Legal Scholarship, Richard L. Revesz Jan 2002

A Defense Of Empirical Legal Scholarship, Richard L. Revesz

Faculty Articles

In the past twenty years, the legal academy has become quite interdisciplinary in its ambitions and methods. It is therefore natural that scholars in other disciplines-particularly the social scienceswould want to assess the quality of work being done by legal scholars, as Epstein and King have done. At the same time, given the extent to which joint degree holders and otherwise academically trained individuals have moved into legal teaching, it would be surprising if the quality of legal research-particularly empirical research-had not improved dramatically over time, with its tools becoming more sophisticated, the questions it addresses becoming better conceived, and …

Defrauding The Public Interest: A Critical Examination Of Reengineered Audit Processes And The Likelihood Of Detecting Fraud, Charles P. Cullinan, Steve G. Sutton Jan 2002

Defrauding The Public Interest: A Critical Examination Of Reengineered Audit Processes And The Likelihood Of Detecting Fraud, Charles P. Cullinan, Steve G. Sutton

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

In the past few years, most of the major international public accounting firms have reengineered their audit processes to improve the cost effectiveness of completing an audit and to focus on value-added services for clients. The reengineered audit processes generally focus on a client’s business processes and the information systems used by the client to generate financial information. In essence, the new audit approaches deemphasize direct testing of the underlying transactions and account balances. Such an approach emphasizes analytical procedures as the main source of substantive evidence. During this same time period, however, the profession (through the AICPA) explicitly acknowledged …
