Based on participant observation of and interviews with parents in two separate support and advocacy groups this study examines how parents come to define themselves in terms of the issues they are fighting for, in this case gay and lesbian acceptance, inclusion, and equality. This research also examines how parents formulate new religious convictions to satisfy their new parental role as supporter and advocate …

Fifteen spouses of international students at a mid-Atlantic university were interviewed with the same rated questions asking them to recall how they felt: When they first arrived in the United States, during their first six months here, during their second six months here, during their third six months here, and at the time of the interview. For the same time periods, they were also asked how many times a …

Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus May 2002

Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This analysis examines the sensitivity of state intergovernmental aid, per capita, to measures of resources, infrastructure, social services, social problems and demographics in Northern and Southern local governments in 1982 and 1992. Time-periods chosen are based on the potential for domestic policies born through new federalism to harm local governments through lesser amounts of available state aid. North and South are compared to account for possible regional differences. Regardless of region and time however, redistribution efforts to local governments with higher levels of need and lower levels of resources are not particularly good. Redistribution tendencies present in 1982 declined by …

Participants were categorized according to their scores on the Conflict Tactics Scale, Revised. Heart rate reactivity, personality variables (using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Second Edition), and anger (using the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory) were subsequently measured during standardized interpersonal discussion tasks with a female confederate during the laboratory phase. Aggressive …

Appalachian Diabetes Patients' Preferences For Mental Health Treatment, Sameep Dilip Maniar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although psychologists are beginning to be employed in medical settings, little is known about medical patients' preferences when encountering mental health problems. One population that could be better served by this type of research is diabetes mellitus because of the poor adherence rates and high depression associated with the disease. The current study aimed to identify diabetes patients' preferences for treatments and helpers when encountering emotional difficulties. Data were collected on 80 patients from an Appalachian region of the United States who had previously been diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Results indicated that diabetes patients were …

The Legal Context And Contributions Of Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment, William Burnham May 2002

The Legal Context And Contributions Of Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment, William Burnham

Michigan Law Review

Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is of more than average interest to lawyers. The title perhaps says it all in terms of content. The chief protagonist, the murderer Raskolnikov, is a law student on a break from his studies. And the pursuer of the murderer is a lawyer, an examining magistrate. But the more subtle and more important legal aspects of Crime and Punishment concern the time period in Russian legal history in which the novel was written and is set. The 1860s in Russia were a time of tremendous legal change. Among other things, an 1861 decree emancipated the serfs …

This quasi-experimental study examined the use of daily drills as a supplemental instructional alternative for underprepared students enrolled in General Psychology courses at a midwestern open-admission community college. Underprepared students were defined as those students whose Nelson-Denny Reading Test score fell below community college entrance level criteria. Daily one-minute drills of course content were provided to all participants in the experimental group. Lectures, discussion, and class activities were provided to both groups. The experimental and control group were compared using retention data, reading scores, and exam scores. Although more students in the experimental group withdrew from the course, most withdrew …

Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner May 2002

Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

The principle of normalization requires that persons with mental retardation (MR) be encouraged to participate in the death and dying rituals which help people process the death of a loved one. It is widely argued that persons with MR would benefit from such inclusion, but little research exists to confirm this, or even to determine the degree to which persons with MR are encouraged to or discouraged from participating in death and dying rituals.

The purpose of this study was to identify how adults with MR are being included in death and dying events and rituals. It also adds to …

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds May 2002

Legal Theory And The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In "Legal Theory and the Rule of Law" Noel Reynolds maintains that the rule of law can be understood as a set of conditions that rational actors would impose on any authority they would create to act in their stead in creating and administering legally binding rules. The authority and obligation associated with law derive from this fundamental convention, and the principles of the rule of law are the conditions of that agreement, which become thereby governing principles to which legislatures, judges, and enforcement agencies can be held in their official actions. These generally recognized standards are inherent in this …

The Development Of A Long-Range Church Growth Plan For Panwal Garden Church From 2000 To 2010: A Plan In Light Of Education Ministry, Seong Kyung Kim

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This thesis project analyzes the past and present of Panwal Garden Church in Seoul, Korea and its community. The strengths and weaknesses of the church were considered. Then, a ten-year plan for growth was developed based on twelve proven principles of church growth. The long-range plan included goals and strategies to accomplish them. Four areas were chosen to emphasize because of their importance: the operation committee, edification of young people, pastoral leadership, and small groups. It was the author's intention to contextualize and indigenize what has been Biblically and empirically proven right for church growth and to put that into …

Development Of The American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Northern Plains, Jessica L. Gourneau May 2002

Development Of The American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Northern Plains, Jessica L. Gourneau

Theses and Dissertations

American Indians' “place” in the context of the Majority Culture has never been clear to either them or their non-Indian counterparts. Many authors of cross-cultural literature suggest the experience of “living with one foot in two canoes” is stressful, confusing, and can even lead to reduced life success and increased psychopathology. This study attempted to develop a factor-analytically devised inventory intended to aid in identification of bicultural identification in hopes it may contribute to greater understanding between cultural orientation and healthy or maladaptive American Indians' functioning.

One hundred and ninety-eight American Indian and Caucasian students and community members from four …

Basque Assimilation Across Four Generations: Experiences In A Rural Community, Megan L. Olson Demontigny May 2002

Basque Assimilation Across Four Generations: Experiences In A Rural Community, Megan L. Olson Demontigny

Theses and Dissertations

The first "Basko" came to the American West in the early 20th century with hopes of securing a future through sheep ranching. Most planned to return home with the money they had made to start their families. However, some stayed after finding a good way to make a living and starting a family.

This research investigates what assimilation was like for those who chose to stay. How far have they come and how did they assimilate? The research spans four generations and includes fourteen interviews with Basques living in Johnson County, Wyoming. In studying the assimilation process of these families …

Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg May 2002

Crossing The Gender Barrier - A History Of Male Nurses In Manitoba, Canada, 1960-1980, Carolyn M. Van Mackelberg

Theses and Dissertations

This paper, Crossing the Gender Barrier - a History of Male Nurses in Manitoba, Canada, will examine the role of men in a female-dominated profession. There is a distinct lack of historical writing on male nurses. Nursing historiography has generally focused on the women who constitute the majority of nurses. Indeed, much of the literature comes from within the nursing profession and the field of sociology, most of which lack an historical emphasis.

The development of the modem healthcare system is important to this work as it illustrates the evolution of the gender constructs that determined that physicians were male …

Masyarakat Dan Kebudayaan Cina, Gondomono Gondomono

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper attempts to trace the identity construction of the Chinese from cultural anthropology perspective. It argues that the constructed identity is always changing and very much influenced by socio, economic, political and cultural aspects. By looking at the society, the language, the kinship and belief system, it comes to a conclusion that the identity is not as simple as it looks. In fact, it often embodies a misperception of what it this to be Chinese. In this context, emphasises the needs for further development of Chinese studies in Indonesian universities.

World Class Manufacturing Best Practices; Do They Play In Peoria? An Ethnographic Study Of A Locally Based Production Facility, Michael R. Lopez Apr 2002

World Class Manufacturing Best Practices; Do They Play In Peoria? An Ethnographic Study Of A Locally Based Production Facility, Michael R. Lopez

Student Scholarship

Invoking the term “best practices” often conjures up the notion of a historically contingent body of regularized routines that are condoned by a particular community. As a whole, they can be viewed as being made up of rules and procedures that construct and legitimatize the way certain people see things and how they talk about them. As a natural consequence, these practices make possible certain statements and communication processes while inhibiting others. The subsequent discourse not only delimits what can be said, it also empowers some to speak authoritatively on the topic in question. In many respects, those perceived to …
