A Diversity Initiative Is Organizational Development: Anything Else Is Just Window Dressing, Carole G. Parker Ph.D. Nov 2002

A Diversity Initiative Is Organizational Development: Anything Else Is Just Window Dressing, Carole G. Parker Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

When an organization, any organization, but in particular, higher education, decides to engage in a diversity initiative, the leadership of the institution must be aware that they are engaging in a complex change or organization development. Organization Development is defined as change initiated by the top leadership of an organization, the change must be organization-wide, it is planned; it is designed to improve organizational health and effectiveness, and is implemented with the assistance of skills and interventions based in the behavioral sciences.

A Qualitative Study Of A Summer Bridge Program's Contribution To The Persistence Of Underrepresented Students Of Color At A Selective, Predominately White Institution , Patrick Velasquez Ph.D. Nov 2002

A Qualitative Study Of A Summer Bridge Program's Contribution To The Persistence Of Underrepresented Students Of Color At A Selective, Predominately White Institution , Patrick Velasquez Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

This proposed presentation will describe a qualitative study of the experiences of ten underrepresented students (African Americans, Chicanos, and Filipinos) of color who attend a public, selective, predominately white, research institution: the University of California, San Diego. More specifically, it will examine the effects of those students' participation in a summer bridge program on their "ease of transition" (Hurtado and Carter, 1997) and their academic and social integration during their freshmen year (Tinto, 1993). In addition, the study provides a context for assessing the students' experiences by also examining their perceptions of the campus climate (Hurtado et al., 1999) at …

Arizona State Unamerican Indian Education , Autumn Weaver

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

Federal rules prohibited American Indian children attending boarding schools from using their native languages until the 1930's. Success would be more attainable for Indian students if the university implemented programs that acknowledge American Indian experience and contributions. Non-Indian students would also benefit from learning about the Indian experiences in United States history. Culturally relevant programming and a visible Native presence would increase both the quality of education and the university's retention of American Indian students.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

Over the past few years, there has been increasing evidence that eating disorders are occurring in racial minorities and ethnic minorities in increasing numbers. This presentation will look at the evidence supporting this trend. We will also look at how eating disorders differ in different racial groups and ethnic minorities. We will explore the issue of acculturation and ethnic and racial identity.

The Abcs Of Tenure: What All African-American Faculty Should Know, Sharon E. Moore Ph.D. Nov 2002

The Abcs Of Tenure: What All African-American Faculty Should Know, Sharon E. Moore Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

African-American faculty are extremely valuable contributors to their respective areas. They bring direct knowledge of the strengths and needs of their communities and serve as role models to aspiring students. Unfortunately some African-American faculty are not successful at getting promotion and or tenure in part because of a lack of mentors and or a lack of clarity regarding tenure criteria. This paper focuses on four issues that are relevant to the tenure process, namely, politics, the publication process, developing a research agenda and submission of the tenure "package".

Obstacles To Inter-Racial Understanding: Some Clinical Implications For Mental Health Practitioners In Predominantly White Institutions, Jenina S. Lepard Lcsw, Ncpsya

in the context of predominantly white institutions. In this paper concepts such as projection, projective identification, splitting, scapegoating, superiority and denial will be employed to illustrate why racial prejudice is a deeply-rooted collective psychological disorder that affects even educated mental health practitioners. Clinicians have an ethical responsibility to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and empathy when working with minority clients, colleagues, staff and students, to examine and root out their own prejudices, and to encourage others to do the same.

Specific patterns of variability of roles across team member disciplines include relatively passive companions who performed more active roles with physician, relatively active companions who performed more passive roles with physician, and relatively passive companions who performed more active roles when particular topics were raised, regardless of team discipline. Two patterns of stability across interactions emerged: consistently active or passive.

Who Will Empower The Better Half? Social Dynamics In Operation, Debabrata Lahiri, Santanu Mitra Nov 2002

Who Will Empower The Better Half? Social Dynamics In Operation, Debabrata Lahiri, Santanu Mitra

Journal of International Women's Studies

In a game theoretic framework it can be argued that a gender sensitive institution is an offshoot of certain social conditions, which in most cases need to be acted upon by some anti-establishment catalytic agent. Given the fact that among about half of the population there is a need for such an institution, the main function of a catalytic agent is to engineer a conversion of that need into an active demand. In a society characterized by gender exploitation, catalytic agent can only come exogenously. For a sub-society it is easier to come across such an exogenous catalytic agent. The …

Cooking Soup To Writing Papers: A Journey Through Gender, Society And Self, Zenobia Chan Nov 2002

Cooking Soup To Writing Papers: A Journey Through Gender, Society And Self, Zenobia Chan

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper describes my roles as a housewife, previously, and a doctoral student, currently. It examines crossing the border from the family domain to the university domain from a gender perspective. When I was a housewife, I was stigmatised by society and without any prospects. As a doctoral student, I am considered a worthy woman and my life has been romanticized. The analogy of cooking soup represents my life as a housewife, while writing papers represents my life as a doctoral student. Describing this dramatic transition from seven years as a soup-cooking housewife, to a third-year, paper-writing, doctoral candidate, I …
