Inclusive Child Care: Challenges And Strategies, Eileen M. Brennan, Elizabeth Haran Caplan, Shane Ama, Jennifer R. Bradley, Olivia Warfield

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Responding to the need for research regarding models of inclusion in child care, the Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children's Mental Health is in the process of conducting a series of studies aimed at guiding the design and implementation of inclusive child care policies and programs. In the course of previous research studies, our research team found that there did exist quality programs and family care arrangements that successfully included children with emotional or behavioral challenges in child care settings (Brennan, Rosenzweig, Ogilvie, Wuest, & Ward, 2001). Our goal was to learn more about the provider and …

Can An Unmarried Biological Father Recover His Child And Damages?, John A. Bluth Jan 2002

Can An Unmarried Biological Father Recover His Child And Damages?, John A. Bluth

Utah Law Review

In 1972, the United States Supreme Court found in Stanley v. Illinois' that a biological father' not married to the child's mother had a constitutional liberty interest under the Fourteenth Amendment that is "cognizable and substantial." Since that time, the legal system has struggled to define exactly what that interest is, and how to balance that interest against a state's legitimate interest in promoting the adoption of children born out of wedlock, preventing unnecessary complications of the adoption process, protecting the privacy interests of the biological mother, avoiding controversy, and ensuring that adoptions are final. States now often attempt to …

An Overview Of Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Young Children, Lisa Ludwig Jan 2002

An Overview Of Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Young Children, Lisa Ludwig

Graduate Research Papers

Young children can benefit from therapy to deal with disabilities, abuse, normal developmental issues such as famiily problems, and social-emotional issues. One approach to helping children manage psychological issues is bibliotherapy. In its simplest form, bibliotherapy can be described as the practice of using books in treatment, or helping with books (Pardeck & Pardeck, 1993; Pardeck & Pardeck, 1987). The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on bibliotherapy and to examine its possible applications, its effectiveness, and best practices in carrying out the intervention.

Employee Assistance Programs And Mental Health Counselors, Paul H. Wehrman Jan 2002

Employee Assistance Programs And Mental Health Counselors, Paul H. Wehrman

Graduate Research Papers

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are services to help employees, and often their dependents, in finding assistance for substance abuse, mental, emotional, family, health, legal, or other personal problems (Balzer & Pargament, 1987; Masi, 1997; Spicer, 1987). For counselors who may not be familiar with EAPs, a brief history is presented. There are four models of EAPs and these are described along with the advantages and disadvantages of each model. Details of how to start an EAP are given coupled with facts about which population may utilize the EAP services. A report on the training, responsibilities, and tasks of EAP counselors …

Childcare, Mothers' Work, And Earnings: Findings From The Urban Slums Of Guatemala City, Kelly Hallman, Agnes R. Quisumbing, Marie T. Ruel, Benedicte De La Briere

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This study investigates the effects of childcare on work and earnings of mothers in the slums of Guatemala City. Recognizing that mother’s work behavior may depend on the availability of childcare, the modeling approach allows participation in the labor force and use of formal daycare to be jointly determined. We also investigate whether a mother’s “status” within her household (as measured by the value of the assets she brought to her marriage) influences her entry into the labor force. Finally, we explore the impact of childcare prices on a mother’s earnings, conditional on her decision to work. The study uses …

Center for Policy Research

The purpose of this study is to summarize and comment upon what we know about the determinants of both the level and trend in economic inequality over the past two decades, and to relate these findings to the progress of globalization in these nations. While the fruits of economic progress in rich nations have not been equally spread, we argue that most citizens enrich Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations have benefited from the trend toward global economic progress. Estimating The Cost Of An Adequate Education In New York, William Duncombe

Center for Policy Research

The New York State Board of Regents and Commissioner of Education have identified a set of clear performance standards for students in New York State that matches the knowledge and skills they will need to function successfully as productive citizens in the 21st century. To match these standards, the New York State Department of Education has developed new Regents Examinations, which all students will be required to pass to graduate from high school, and new examinations in 4th and 8th grades that serve as important intermediate checkpoints in assessing student progress. Justice Leland DeGrasse wrote in *Campaign for Fiscal Equity …

A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman Jan 2002

A Question Of Revenge: Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy And A Proposed Diminished Capacity Defense For Homicidal Mothers, E. Selene Steelman

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP) should be legally recognized as a severe mental disorder, allowing defendants to use a diminished capacity defense in cases of accidental filicide. The author critiques the legal system's inconsistent treatment of MSBP, which often focuses on the physical harm to the child while neglecting the mother's mental state. By acknowledging MSBP as a psychiatric disorder, the law could achieve more nuanced outcomes that consider both the act and the defendant's mental condition, reducing stigma and promoting fairness in criminal liability assessments.

This particular study looked at a subset of women (n=12) from Wave II and explored two questions: (a) Whether the decline in Louisiana welfare caseloads translated into rural women finding and keeping jobs; and (b) What is the likelihood that the women employed at the time of this study will be able to sustain their work efforts and …
