Vcu News (2002-02-05)
VCU News, 2001-2002
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs
This issue brief, prepared by the George Washington University Center for Health Services Research and Policy (CHSRP), presents an analysis of a sample of contractual agreements entered into by State Departments of Corrections with managed care organizations (MCOs) for the provision of managed behavioral health care services in State prisons. It is part of a series of contract studies undertaken by CHSRP that examine the implications of managed care contracting by public and private sector purchasers for the financing and delivery of behavioral health care services.

Caring For Survivors Of Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation, Linda D. Scott, Cynthia Arslanian-Engoren
Caring For Survivors Of Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation, Linda D. Scott, Cynthia Arslanian-Engoren
Peer Reviewed Articles
Approximately 54 million adults in the United States are involved in some form of family care-giving, with 15% of these individuals providing complex care in their homes. Therefore, it is essential to identify the nuances associated with complex community-based family care-giving. This study investigated family caregivers’ perceptions of caring for individuals who survived tracheostomy for prolonged mechanical ventilation. Using a quantitative approach, family caregivers (n = 15) reported that they were somewhat prepared for this experience. The findings suggested that family caregivers experience considerable physical and psychological effects throughout their care-giving careers. Despite physical and mental health challenges, the caregivers …

Contradictions Of Interaction For Wives Of Elderly Husbands With Adult Dementia, Leslie A. Baxter, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Tamara D. Golish, Loreen N. Olson
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
The researchers used a dialectical framework to examine interviews with wives whose elderly husbands experienced adult dementia from Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD), centering on how wives coped communicatively with their husbands’ illness. Interwoven with the presence-absence contradiction were three additional contradictions: certainty-uncertainty, openness-closedness, and past-present. Results describe the ways these wives communicatively negotiated the web of contradictions as they interacted in the present with husbands they once knew. Applications for practitioners and caregivers working with ADRD patients and their wives, including formal and …
