Storm Clouds On The Horizon Of Darwinism: Teaching The Anthropic Principle And Intelligent Design In The Public Schools, Jeffrey F. Addicott Jan 2002

Storm Clouds On The Horizon Of Darwinism: Teaching The Anthropic Principle And Intelligent Design In The Public Schools, Jeffrey F. Addicott

Faculty Articles

Professor Addicott’s article addresses the future legal ramifications that the fledgling intelligent design movement and the scientific concept known as the Anthropic Principle will have on the teaching of Darwinian evolution in public schools. Both ideas are associated with the concept that an “unnamed” intelligent designer is responsible for the creation and sustainment of life. Predicting that the Supreme Court will ultimately allow, for instance, school boards to incorporate intelligent design in the science curriculum, he believes neither of the two ideas violate the Establishment Clause and cannot be “dismissed as yet another back door attempt by creationists to get …

Service-Learning On American Campuses: Challenges For Pedagogy And Practice, Sandra Enos Jan 2002

Service-Learning On American Campuses: Challenges For Pedagogy And Practice, Sandra Enos

Higher Education

Over the past twenty years, there has been a steady increase in the number of students involved in community service and service-learning programs on college campuses. A recent report by Campus Compact (2003) noted that 33 percent of college students on its member campuses were engaged in community service programs during the last academic year. Surveys by Compact found that eleven percent of higher education faculty offered an average of 30 service-learning courses on campuses (Campus Compact 2003, 2003a). Increasingly, institutions of higher education are supporting these efforts by establishing community service and service-learning offices, staffing them, and by providing …

From The Courtroom To The Street: Court Orders And Section 1983, Sheldon Nahmod Jan 2002

From The Courtroom To The Street: Court Orders And Section 1983, Sheldon Nahmod

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Using a seriously questionable Eighth Circuit decision as a foil but going well beyond it, Professor Nahmod argues that absolute quasi-judicial immunity from section 1983 damages liability should only protect law enforcement officers and others whose challenged conduct is prescribed by presumptively valid court orders. In contrast, neither absolute nor qualified immunity should protect law enforcement officers and others who follow presumptively invalid judicial orders (a "Nuremberg following-orders" defense issue). Furthermore, quasi-judicial immunity should not protect law enforcement officers and others whose allegedly unconstitutional conduct is not prescribed by presumptively valid court orders; qualified immunity is more than adequate to …

The Cemetery Record Of William D. Huntington, Nauvoo Sexton, Fred E. Woods Jan 2002

The Cemetery Record Of William D. Huntington, Nauvoo Sexton, Fred E. Woods

Faculty Publications

When John Butler first visited Commerce (later known as Nauvoo) he recalled, "I asked Brother Joseph what kind of a place it was. He said it was a low, marshy, wet, damp and nasty place, but that if we went to work and improved it, it would become more healthy and the Lord would bless it for our sakes." The Prophet Joseph Smith also stated, "the name of our city (Nauvoo) is of Hebrew origin, and signifies a beautiful situation, or place, carrying with it, also, the idea of rest; and is truly descriptive of the most delightful situation... Digging Up Roots In "Gardens Of Eden": Michelene Wandor's Feminist Midrash, Lisa Renee Kenyon Jan 2002

Digging Up Roots In "Gardens Of Eden": Michelene Wandor's Feminist Midrash, Lisa Renee Kenyon

Open Access Dissertations

Michelene Wandor is best known for her critical writings on gender in the British theatre, but Wandor is also the author of short stories, plays, and two collections of poetry, and her creative works reiterate and reinforce many of the issues and themes present in her theatrical criticism. It is unfortunate that Wandor's poetry is generally overlooked, for the poems, particularly Gardens of Eden, mirror her growth as a writer and as a feminist, explore the role of feminism in her creative process, and reveal the connections between her art and her political beliefs. Michelene Wandor's poems are representative not …

Some Theological Implications Of Two Catholic Responses In Care And Prevention To The Hiv/Aids Pandemic In Korea And The Philippines, Yong-Seong Roh Jan 2002

Some Theological Implications Of Two Catholic Responses In Care And Prevention To The Hiv/Aids Pandemic In Korea And The Philippines, Yong-Seong Roh

Theses

Dialogues with two Catholic institutions in Korea and the Philippines concerned with those suffering from AIDS and working to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS highlight the ambiguities and contradictions in both current knowledge and attitudes. Among the general public and church members there is considerable misunderstanding about the issues both the nature of the disease and the Church's moral teaching. Catholic institutions and secular based NGOs reveal the importance of interactive social networks in promoting positive responses in the face of widespread prejudice and stigmatization.

Suffering arising from HIV/AIDS presents a challenge to promote an ethics of relieving the misery …

Free Will And Responsiblity: Indeterminism And Its Problems, Troy Dwayne Fassbender Jan 2002

Free Will And Responsiblity: Indeterminism And Its Problems, Troy Dwayne Fassbender

LSU Master's Theses

This work is devoted to criticisms of libertarian philosophers who attempt to provide an account of agent freedom that relies solely upon indeterminism. First, the philosophy of Robert Kane is examined. I argue that Kane's account does not succeed as an intelligible libertarian account of freedom and at best makes compatibilist accounts more intuitive. I next examine objections to indeterminist accounts as lodged by Galen Strawson, Thomas Nagel, Daniel Dennett, and Richard Double before turning to an analysis of a debate among Peter van Inwagen, John Martin Fischer and Mark Ravizza. Van Inwagen argues that we are seldom able to …

Continuous Academic Improvement : A Case Study Comparison Of Private And Public School, Shannon Wheelan Jan 2002

Continuous Academic Improvement : A Case Study Comparison Of Private And Public School, Shannon Wheelan

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This research was based on comparing a private high school and a public high school in terms of organizational differences and continuous improvement. The continuous improvement concept is a theory and method used in business for improving an organization and was applied to these schools. There have been previous studies conducted that have shown there are fundamental organizational differences between public and private school. Studies have also shown that using the theory of continuous improvement in an organizational setting may increase efficiency and effectiveness. There were two research questions in this study: (1) Are there differences in organizational characteristics between …

Heracleon: Fragments Of Early Valentinian Exegesis. Text, Translation, And Commentary, Timothy James Pettipiece Jan 2002

Heracleon: Fragments Of Early Valentinian Exegesis. Text, Translation, And Commentary, Timothy James Pettipiece

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis offers an in-depth study of Heracleon, an early Christian writer from the second century CE, who wrote the earliest known commentary on the Gospel of John. The text of this ancient commentary, written in Greek from the perspective of Valentinian theology, is known only from fragmentary citations made from it by Origen in his own later commentary on the same gospel. Although long-known as a representative of the Valentinian schools, Heracleon has often been neglected due to scholarly preoccupations with his teacher, Valentinus, as well as an ever-increasing emphasis on the Valentinian writings found within the Nag Hammadi …

Using Religious Discourse To Construct Reality: President George W Bush And Osama Bin Laden, Lisa Menegatos Jan 2002

Using Religious Discourse To Construct Reality: President George W Bush And Osama Bin Laden, Lisa Menegatos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines and compares the religious discourse used by President George W. Bush in his September 20, 2001, address to a join session of Congress and by Osama bin Laden in his taped statement that aired on Al Jazeera television on October 7, 2001. As leaders of societies who both believe they are God's chosen people with a mission, both men relied on the religions of their respective nations to create a reality whereby one was good and the other evil. To illustrate how Bush and bin Laden achieve this, I apply the social construction of reality theory as …

Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill Jan 2002

Theological Reflections On Leadership In Christian Community, Gerard O'Neill

Theses

This paper examines the dynamics involved in Christian community, paying particular attention to the pivotal role leadership plays in nurturing and sustaining the life of the community. It begins by analysing the human need for community if people are to fulfill their potential both individually and communally. Time is devoted to understanding Christian community from a Scriptural perspective and a caution is sounded not to envisage Christian community in purely mechanistic terms. The doctrine of the trinity of God is used as a lens to view vital characteristics in the life of a Christian community. The theology of leadership is …
