Re-Thinking Cosmology Ethically And Theologically In The Light Of Emmanuel Lévinas' Phenomenology Of Evil, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2002

Re-Thinking Cosmology Ethically And Theologically In The Light Of Emmanuel Lévinas' Phenomenology Of Evil, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Conference Papers

This article uses the ethical metaphysics of the French-Jewish Philosopher and Talmudic Scholar, Emmanuel Lévinas, to advance a Judeo-Christian theological approach to Cosmology. Although Lévinas has been long noted by Christian theologians, his writings have not yet been considered by Science and, in particular, cosmology. It is argued that Lévinas' phenomenology of Evil provides an important foundation for creating an ethical Judeo-Christian approach to cosmology. “The Chinese Believe In Spirits”: Belief And Believing In The Study Of Religion, Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

A recent round of books, both popular and scholarly, reveal that as a society we are, once again, fascinated with the issue of belief. While the more popular books tend to adopt a fairly straightforward and uncomplicated notion of believing and then find major problems of rationality, the more scholarly books readily accept a type of rationality to beliefs while problematizing the act of believing in other, more involuted ways. Both types of argument remind the scholar of religion that the academic discipline of religious studies has not contributed much to this discussion for quite a while. As described in …

Draper also describes the printing process of the Book of Mormon, which process was made clearer because of Skousen’s project. Through Assyria's Eyes: Israel's Relationship With Judah, Tammi J. Schneider Jan 2002

Through Assyria's Eyes: Israel's Relationship With Judah, Tammi J. Schneider

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The goal of the Bible was not to record history, and the text does not shy away from theological explanations for events. Given this problematic relationship between sacred interpretation and historical accuracy, historians welcomed the discovery of ancient Assyrian cuneiform documents that refer to people and places mentioned in the Bible. Discovered in the 19th century, these historical records are now being used by scholars to corroborate and augment the biblical text, especially the Bible’s “historical books” of Kings. This field for comparison complements the recent trend among biblical scholars of using new interpretative methodologies and archaeology to question some …
