Effect Of Dietary Zinc Deficiency On Rat Lipid Concentrations, Samir M. Khoja, Zuhair M. Marzouki, Khaled M. Ashry, Sami A. Hamdi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the lipid profile in serum, liver, and testis of rats fed marginal and severe zinc deficient diets. METHODS: Three groups of rats were treated for 8 weeks with normal diet, marginally zinc deficient diet and severely zinc deficient diet. Lipid concentrations were measured in serum, liver, and testis of these groups. RESULTS: The concentrations of serum lipids were not significantly altered between marginally zinc deficient diet treated and control rats. However, in rats treated with severely zinc deficient diet, the concentrations of serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and phospholipids were significantly increased (P < 0.01) and (P < 0.001), whereas the concentration of triacylglycerol was significantly decreased (P < 0.01). However, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration was non-significantly different from controls. The concentrations of liver total cholesterol, triacylglycerol and phospholipids were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in rats treated with severely zinc deficient diet. The testicular concentration of total cholesterol was increased but this increase was non-significantly different from controls, whereas the testicular concentrations of triacylglycerol and phospholipids were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in rats treated with severely zinc deficient diet. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that a marginally zinc deficient diet does not play a significant role in altering rat lipid concentrations. However, the changes in serum lipid concentrations could be related to those changes in tissue lipid concentrations.

Psoas Abscess Presenting With Femoro-Popliteal Vein Thrombosis, Oludare A. Demuren, Mohammed Abomelha

Saudi Medical Journal

Psoas abscess is an uncommon condition with vague clinical presentation. It generally has an insidious onset and before the advent of computed tomography, few cases were reported in the medical literature. We report the case of a middle aged diabetic woman who presented with left leg swelling. Doppler ultrasound revealed thrombosis of the popliteal vein and a collection in the left groin. Computed tomography confirmed the presence of a large left iliopsoas abscess extending to the anterior compartment of the thigh complicated with thrombosis of the superficial femoral and popliteal veins. We suggest that an iliopsoas abscess should be excluded …

Conformational Strictness Required For Maximum Activity And Stability Of Bovine Pancreatic Ribonuclease A As Revealed By Crystallographic Study Of Three Phe120 Mutants At 1.4 Å Resolution, Eri Chatani, Rikimaru Hayashi, Hideaki Moriyama, Tatzuo Ueki Jan 2002

Conformational Strictness Required For Maximum Activity And Stability Of Bovine Pancreatic Ribonuclease A As Revealed By Crystallographic Study Of Three Phe120 Mutants At 1.4 Å Resolution, Eri Chatani, Rikimaru Hayashi, Hideaki Moriyama, Tatzuo Ueki

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The replacement of Phe120 with other hydrophobic residues causes a decrease in the activity and thermal stability in ribonuclease A (RNase A). To explain this, the crystal structures of wild-type RNase A and three mutants—F120A, F120G, and F120W—were analyzed up to a 1.4 Å resolution. Although the overall backbone structures of all mutant samples were nearly the same as that of wild-type RNase A, except for the C-terminal region of F120G with a high B-factor, two local conformational changes were observed at His119 in the mutants. First, His119 of the wild-type and F120W RNase A adopted an A position, whereas …

Stat6 Mediates Interleukin-4 Growth Inhibition In Human Breast Cancer Cells, Jennifer L. Gooch, B. Christy, D. Yee

PCOM Scholarly Works

In addition to acting as a hematopoietic growth factor, interleukin-4 (IL-4) inhibits growth of some transformed cells in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we show that insulin receptor substrate (IRS)-1, IRS-2, and signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) are phosphorylated following IL-4 treatment in MCF-7 breast cancer cells. STAT6 DNA binding is enhanced by IL-4 treatment. STAT6 activation occurs even after IRS-1 depletion, suggesting the two pathways are independent. To examine the role of STAT6 in IL-4-mediated growth inhibition and apoptosis, a full-length STAT6 cDNA was transfected into MCF-7 cells. Transient overexpression of STAT6 resulted in …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

This paper presents a cross-sectional study testing whether dolphins that are born in aquarium pools where they hear trainers’ whistles develop whistles that are less frequency modulated than those of wild dolphins. Ten pairs of captive and wild dolphins were matched for age and sex. Twenty whistles were sampled from each dolphin. Several traditional acoustic features (total duration, duration minus any silent periods, etc.) were measured for each whistle, in addition to newly defined flatness parameters: total flatness ratio (percentage of whistle scored as unmodulated), and contiguous flatness ratio (duration of longest flat segment divided by total duration). The durations …

Three-Dimensional Propagation Effects Near The Mid-Atlantic Bight Shelf Break (L), Kevin B. Smith, Chris W. Miller, Anthony F. D'Agostino, Brian Sperry, James H. Miller, Gopu R. Potty

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Significant three-dimensional (3-D) environmental variability exists in the vicinity of the shelf break along the mid-Atlantic Bight. This study examines the influence of azimuthal coupling due to this variability on acoustic propagation in this region. Numerical studies employing a 3-D ray code, a hybrid ray-mode code, and a 3-D parabolic equation model are used to study the significance of azimuthal coupling on various propagation paths. These paths include up-slope, slant-slope, and cross-slope propagation. The numerical analysis suggests that, for the propagation ranges less than 60 km examined, the influence of azimuthal coupling is negligible compared to the inherent uncertainty in …

Seasonal Distribution And Abundance Of Fishes And Decapod Crustaceans In A Cape Cod Estuary, Kenneth W. Able, Michael P. Fahay, Kenneth L. Heck Jr., Charles T. Roman, Mark A. Lazzari, Susan C. Kaiser

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Sampling in several habitat types (sand/mud, eelgrass, sand, gravel, macroalgae/mud) during all seasons with a variety of gears in Nauset Marsh, Massachusetts during 1985–1987 found a fauna consisting of 35 fish and 10 decapod crustacean species. Although most of the abundant species were found in several habitat types, species richness and habitat use appeared to be highest for vegetated habitats (eelgrass, macroalgae). The fishes and decapods were numerically dominated by cold-water taxa; however, numerous fish species, represented by rare individuals of predominantly southern forms, enriched the fauna. Species composition of Nauset Marsh could be distinguished from estuaries south of Cape …

Direct Measurements Of Light Attenuation By Epiphytes On Eelgrass Zostera Marina, Mark J. Brush, Scott W. Nixon Jan 2002

Direct Measurements Of Light Attenuation By Epiphytes On Eelgrass Zostera Marina, Mark J. Brush, Scott W. Nixon

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Declines in the seagrass Zostera marina L. in estuaries and lagoons have been attributed in part to reductions in irradiance reaching the seagrass blades. Epiphytes growing on Z. marina have the potential to attenuate a large fraction of the light that would otherwise reach the blades. This problem has previously been studied by measuring light penetration through homogenized epiphytic slurries or through glass slides fouled with epiphytes. However, the latter may not represent the natural succession or species composition found on live Z. marina leaves and the former does not preserve the structure of the epiphytic complex. Further, past studies …

Form And Function In Business Organizations, Richard A. Booth Marbury Research Professor Of Law Jan 2002

Form And Function In Business Organizations, Richard A. Booth Marbury Research Professor Of Law

Faculty Scholarship

In this piece, I argue that the recent proliferation of forms of business organizations in addition to the traditional partnership and corporation may have arisen from the implicit recognition that various organizations may serve needs of business people in different types of businesses, and that traditional theory of the firm explanations are too narrowly focused on market failure explanations for firm formation. I identify at least five different factors that may motivate people to form a business organization and discuss how these different factors may militate in favor of one business form rather than another. I conclude that the collections …
