The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The Canadian Landmine Foundation (CLF) and the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) sponsored a worldwide charity event called the Night of 1000 Dinners (N1KD). This unique event, which benefited the Adopt-A-Minefield® Campaign, among other organizations, spanned over 30 countries, including the United States, Lebanon, Croatia, Greece, Canada, Norway, Pakistan and Mozambique. People invited friends and family to their homes or hosted events through their businesses, schools or religious organizations. Guests were asked to make contributions to the landmine cause, while hosts were encouraged to prepare a meal native to one of the more than 70 …

Speech, Press, And Democracy, Paul Finkelman
Speech, Press, And Democracy, Paul Finkelman
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Professor Michael Kent Curtis's latest book, Free Speech, "The People's Darling Privilege": Struggles for Freedom of Expression in American History, chronicles the efforts of ordinary Americans to protect their right to freedom of expression from 1791-1865. Professor Paul Finkelman reviews this book, focusing primarily on Curtis's discussions of suppression of speech prior to and during the Civil War period and additionally providing some thoughts concerning the appropriateness of revoking free speech rights during times of war.
Financial Accountability In Charitable Organizations: Mandating An Audit Committee Function, Karyn R. Vanderwarren
Financial Accountability In Charitable Organizations: Mandating An Audit Committee Function, Karyn R. Vanderwarren
Chicago-Kent Law Review
In recent years, the public image of charitable organizations has been harmed by highly publicized cases of executive theft of charitable assets. While the federal government has responded by requiring public disclosure of financial information and by imposing intermediate sanctions on insiders receiving excessive benefits, the best place to detect or prevent theft of charitable assets is at the board level. In many cases, charitable organizations could have prevented theft of assets by ensuring that standard procedures, designed to prevent and detect such thefts, were in place. This Note argues that placing responsibility at the board level by requiring charitable …

Etsu Today - Spring 2002, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University
ETSU Today [magazine]
By the time this magazine arrives in your mailbox, the East Tennessee State University campus will have experienced yet another unforgettable mountain springtime. The pink and white dogwoods blooming all around the campus remind us of the constant renewal of life. As I walk around these grounds so alive with color, I think about the enormous promise that life holds for our students and recent graduates. Honors banquets and initiations take place almost nightly each April. Classes often meet outside under our old oak trees. Summer plans are set in place for jobs back home, study abroad, or an early …

Welcomed Participants' Or 'Environmental Vigilantes'? The Cepa Environmental Protection Action And The Role Of Citizen Suits In Federal Environmental Law, Marcia Valiante
Welcomed Participants' Or 'Environmental Vigilantes'? The Cepa Environmental Protection Action And The Role Of Citizen Suits In Federal Environmental Law, Marcia Valiante
Dalhousie Law Journal
In the 1999 amendments to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, the federal government added a new citizen enforcement tool, known as an "environmental protection action." This was the first "citizen suit" provision in Canadian federal environmental law but it is unlikely to play more than a minor role in advancing enforcement of CEPA and is unlikely to be adopted in other environmental laws. This is because, despite initial interest in and commitment to citizen enforcement, the government was persuaded by industry representatives and others to significantly constrain the action and, shortly afterwards, to drop it entirely from the Species At …

Recent and coming organisational changes will have significant implications for the role of the Croatian Mine Action Centre in mine-risk education. The withdrawal of ICRC support for the Croatian Red Cross will have major implications for the development, delivery and implementation of MRE programming. The Ministry of Education faces substantial changes in its implementation capacity. These and other findings were the result of this evaluation.

Book Review: Privacy Law In Canada By Colin H.H. Mcnairn And Alexander K. Scott, Anne Mussett
Book Review: Privacy Law In Canada By Colin H.H. Mcnairn And Alexander K. Scott, Anne Mussett
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
Privacy Law in Canada is a 360-page work that broadly covers legislation at both the federal and provin- cial level, and criminal and civil liability for privacy intru- sions in the context of case law from across Canada. Particular focus is given to privacy issues associated with the workplace, personal health information, technolog- ical surveillance, and protecting consumers and debtors. The authors take a practical approach in examining chal- lenging questions, such as whether a consumer’s consent is required to obtain a credit report; disclosure of med- ical information; monitoring an employee’s computer use and voice mail; how the PIPEDA …
