Building Community: An Environmental Approach To Crime Prevention, Gustavo A. Barreto
Building Community: An Environmental Approach To Crime Prevention, Gustavo A. Barreto
LSU Master's Theses
Crime cannot be understood as a single-solution problem. Participation of the community is important to complement and make more efficient any program of crime control by police authorities or any other law enforcement agency. This thesis is intended to create consciousness among designers of the urban environment of their social role. Cities must include places to promote community interaction and formation of social bonds. As social bonds among residents increase, and bonds with the place begin building a sense of territoriality in the community, the residents become active defenders of the place against crime. A theory summary presents different and …

Projected Idol: A Madman's Obsession, Aaron Paul Hussey
Projected Idol: A Madman's Obsession, Aaron Paul Hussey
LSU Master's Theses
My art work explores societal issues and the effects of accepted norms on the public and on myself. The baseline issue is security. People will go to extremes to feel secure! My goal is to create images that will start a dialog that addresses these issues and disseminates information that will cause social change. Projected Idol: a madman’s obsession is a sculptural installation that examines the theme of the ideal male body image in western culture and the mixed signals that are projected through mass media. These conflicting images play a direct role in the security or insecurity of people …
Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal
Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal
LSU Master's Theses
Women experience more weight gain than men postcessation and are more aware of nicotine’s weight suppressing effects than men. Postcessation weight gain in women can be largely accounted for by significant increases in high fat foods from pre- to postcessation. Overeating found in the luteal phase, further compounds the increased caloric intake found postcessation. Few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of smoking cessation on macronutrient content and weight gain; and most have relied on self-report data. This study used the Macronutrient Self-Selection Paradigm (MSSP) and Food Preference Questionnaire (FPQ) to assess food intake in 17 women in the luteal …
A Variable Response Time Lag Module For Car Following Models Using Fuzzy Set Theory, Yilmaz Hatipkarasulu
A Variable Response Time Lag Module For Car Following Models Using Fuzzy Set Theory, Yilmaz Hatipkarasulu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Since the 1950s, car following phenomena have been studied and analyzed, resulting in various models and algorithms. In general, the car following process has been defined as a stimulus-response relationship in which the driver of the following vehicle reacts to the actions of the lead vehicle after a time lag. One of the fundamental assumptions that underlie car following theory is that the driver response time lag is always a constant value for the driver at all times, regardless of level of detail of the model. Assumption of a constant time lag value introduces a number of broad assumptions however, …

An Analysis Of The Plays Of Margaret Macnamara, Patricia Ellen Lufkin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents Margaret Macnamara’s career as a playwright and dramaturg while exploring the cultural and political context of her works. It explores the influences of the Fabian Society on Macnamara’s work and places her among such leading independent theatre artists as George Bernard Shaw, Harley Granville Barker, and Nugent Monck. The political context of her work is examined as her play, Mrs. Hodges (1920 is compared with Shaw’s Widowers’ Houses and the theatrical context of her work is established as productions of The Gates of the Morning (1908) and Our Little Fancies (1911) are analyzed. Her plays are grouped …

Experience-Based Language Acquisition: A Computational Model Of Human Language Acquisition, Brian Edward Pangburn
Experience-Based Language Acquisition: A Computational Model Of Human Language Acquisition, Brian Edward Pangburn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Almost from the very beginning of the digital age, people have sought better ways to communicate with computers. This research investigates how computers might be enabled to understand natural language in a more humanlike way. Based, in part, on cognitive development in infants, we introduce an open computational framework for visual perception and grounded language acquisition called Experience-Based Language Acquisition (EBLA). EBLA can “watch” a series of short videos and acquire a simple language of nouns and verbs corresponding to the objects and object-object relations in those videos. Upon acquiring this protolanguage, EBLA can perform basic scene analysis to generate …

The potential for violent media to prime …
Organizational Perceptions And Their Relationships To Job Attitudes Effort, Performance And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Keith Douglas Mccook
Organizational Perceptions And Their Relationships To Job Attitudes Effort, Performance And Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Keith Douglas Mccook
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study integrates and expands two models of organizational support perceptions, job attitudes, effort, and employee behavior (i.e., Brown & Leigh, 1996; Netemeyer, Boles, McKee, & McMurrian, 1997). An integrated model was hypothesized, in which Perceived Organizational Support and Perceived Opportunity for Reward impacted job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job involvement, which in turn influenced effort (work intensity and time commitment), which subsequently impacted Organizational Citizenship Behaviors (OCBs) and in-role performance. Employee – supervisor dyads were surveyed (n = 279), and structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized model and several alternative models. Results indicated that the hypothesized …
Social Exchange And Customer Service: The Relationship Between Perceived Organizational Support, Leader-Member Exchange, And Customer Service Behavior, Lisa Michelle Polly
Social Exchange And Customer Service: The Relationship Between Perceived Organizational Support, Leader-Member Exchange, And Customer Service Behavior, Lisa Michelle Polly
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As the economy continues to shift from the production of goods to the delivery of services, one way in which an organization might set itself apart from its competition is through the delivery of high quality customer service. Therefore, a critical question for organizations becomes how to elicit the appropriate level of service from its employees. The purpose of the current study was to propose and test a social exchange based model of customer service. Specifically, it was suggested that the quality of the organization-service employee and manager-service employee relationships would be related to employee customer service behavior through their …

The Effect Of Initial Selections In Estimating The Missing Comparisons In An Incomplete Ahp Matrix, Sugeng Setiawan
The Effect Of Initial Selections In Estimating The Missing Comparisons In An Incomplete Ahp Matrix, Sugeng Setiawan
LSU Master's Theses
One of the most widely used methods in decision-making is the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). With its technique of comparing the alternatives by means of a sequence of pairwise comparison matrices, the AHP is both easy to understand and very versatile. This research aims at contributing some insights on this method, in particular, regarding to what is known as the incomplete AHP. The core of this research is to investigate whether the initial comparisons used to extract the data for a multi-criteria decision making problem, will play a role in producing a relatively accurate estimation of the ranking of the …

The following two objectives were established: 1) Explore the characteristics of Korean American older adults including socioeconomic status, acculturation level, social support, and physical and mental health status. 2) Assess direct and indirect effects of socioeconomic status, acculturation level, and …
Organizational Culture's Contributions To Security Failures Within The United States Intelligence Community, Troy Michael Mouton
Organizational Culture's Contributions To Security Failures Within The United States Intelligence Community, Troy Michael Mouton
LSU Master's Theses
The institutions that comprise the United States intelligence community have organizational cultures that are unique from other government agencies. These cultures encourage the development and retention of traits that are necessary to mission accomplishment, yet these exclusivities also hamstring organizations and may contribute to significant security failures. This thesis isolates elements of organizational culture that are specific to the United States intelligence community and explores the extent to which the culture is responsible for security and/or counterintelligence shortcomings. The author selected three governmental organizations with intelligence collection and analysis functions; they include the Naval Investigative Service (NIS), Central Intelligence Agency …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the effect of music on text recall and involuntary mental rehearsal (din) with students from four college-level Beginning Spanish classes. Two groups heard texts as songs, one group heard the same texts as speech, and one group was the control group. For the text recall variable, a cloze test was administered at the end of each song treatment to determine total words recalled. Students from one of the music groups heard the melody of the song while testing. For the din variable, students were asked to report on the amount of this phenomenon experienced. Data was collected …
Factors Which Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Distance Education In Analytical Subject Areas, Jeffrey G. Sumrall
Factors Which Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Distance Education In Analytical Subject Areas, Jeffrey G. Sumrall
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study focuses on current faculty attitudes and perceptions of distance education. A thorough review of literature indicates that faculty members are critical elements of distance education delivery and that certain factors (tenure, departmental incentives, gender, age) influence faculty participation. The main hypothesis being investigated is whether or not the analytical nature of the course is in fact the prime indicator in faculty participation. Faculty members from three randomly chosen SREB member institutions were surveyed. The purpose for choosing SREB member institutions for the population was for generalizing the findings to higher education institutions throughout the Southeastern United States. The …
Aspects Of Cognition In Human Mate Selection, Michael J. Stasio
Aspects Of Cognition In Human Mate Selection, Michael J. Stasio
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Evolutionary perspectives on human mating have provided testable hypotheses regarding what qualities people desire in their mates and why they want them. One study was conducted to replicate previous findings in mate preference using a more sophisticated paired comparison methodology to develop scales. Paired comparison scaling generally replicated gender differences in mate preferences consistent with evolutionary predictions. Further, decision-making reaction time (ms) suggested the presence of an underlying psychological continuum of selection criteria. A series of studies were then conducted applying the information processing approach (IPA) to investigate attention and knowledge organization in mate preference. The dot-probe paradigm was used …

Useful Field Of View Of An Indicator Of Accident Risk: Results From A College Sample, Jeffrey James Schneider
Useful Field Of View Of An Indicator Of Accident Risk: Results From A College Sample, Jeffrey James Schneider
LSU Master's Theses
Driving is an important part of daily life in our society. Neurocognitive deficits acquired from a head injury can affect driving ability. Determining when it is safe for a person recovering from a head injury to return to the road can often be difficult. With the risk involved in an on-the-road driving evaluation, effective measures are needed to determine when patients are ready to be evaluated. Some neuropsychological measures have shown promise in this area. The Useful Field of View (UFOV) is one test that has been used successfully with older drivers to predict accident risk. Research has also been …
What's So Strange About Human Cloning, Radhika Rao
What's So Strange About Human Cloning, Radhika Rao
UC Law Journal
In this Essay, Professor Radhika Rao, explores three reasons for the popular repugnance toward human cloning and their consequences for the question whether or not there is a constitutional right to clone a human being. She argues that, although the impulse to ban human cloning may stem from the wrong reasons, human cloning may still be banned for the right reasons.

Is There A Constitutional Right To Clone, Cass R. Sunstein
Is There A Constitutional Right To Clone, Cass R. Sunstein
UC Law Journal
Recent scientific innovations, and proposed legislation have raised - questions about the nature of the constitutional right to reproductive freedom, and in particular about whether there is a constitutional "right to clone." This Essay urges that as a matter of substantive due process, rationality review is probably appropriate, and that restrictions on both reproductive and therapeutic cloning would and should survive constitutional scrutiny. At the same time, many of the arguments for banning both forms of cloning are based on ignorance, myths, and speculation. It is extremely important to distinguish between reproductive and nonreproductive cloning, and it is equally important …

Mandating Effective Treatment For Drug Offenders, Lisa Rosenblum
Mandating Effective Treatment For Drug Offenders, Lisa Rosenblum
UC Law Journal
Drug offense recidivism continues to plague our overburdened criminal justice system. Increases in sentencing and incarceration rates have done little to mitigate the problem. Given the unique nature of chemical addiction, traditional penal measures have been ineffective in deterring repeat offenders. Noting the failure of incarceration, this Note proposes that treatment and rehabilitation of drug offenders are more appropriate means of reducing illegal drug use. More specifically, this Note considers as models Arizona and California Acts that mandate substituting court-supervised drug treatment and education programs for incarceration. In advancing the rehabilitative ideal, these Acts have been more successful than previous …
