A Design For The Infusion Of State Mandated Technology Standards Into A Teacher Education Credentialing Program, Paul F. Massmann

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to infuse state mandated technology standards into the curriculum of a small university accredited to grant teaching certification. The state recently revised its requirements for the entire credential process. In doing so, they developed a much more demanding set of technology standards than those currently in place in the program. This new set of requirements included not only specific standards to be met by the credential candidate, but required the faculty to model these standards in their traditional face-to-face classes. The goal was to effectively implement these new standards.

The solution had two distinct tracks. …

The Greatest Problem With Which The Library Is Confronted: A Survey Of Academic Library Outreach To The Freshman Course, Cindy Pierard, Kathryn A. Graves

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Freshman Year Experience movement has created an excellent opportunity for academic library outreach. Its values, which include collaboration among various campus units charged with supporting student success and a focus on student mastery of key academic skills, correspond well with the objective of many college and university libraries: to become a more central part of the institution's educational mission. This chapter provides a discussion of academic library outreach to one of the movement's most significant components, the freshman course. The aim is to provide an overview of historic and contemporary trends in postsecondary freshman programming and corresponding library outreach …

Substituting Mediation For Arbitration: The Growing Market For Evaluative Mediation, And What It Means For The Adr Field, Robert A. Baruch Bush Jan 2002

Substituting Mediation For Arbitration: The Growing Market For Evaluative Mediation, And What It Means For The Adr Field, Robert A. Baruch Bush

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The past decade has seen significant expansion in the acceptance and use of mediation as a process for handling disputes. That expansion has been particularly marked in the legal and business sectors. Indeed, old hands in the ADR field observe that mediation has begun to replace arbitration as the "process of choice" in the ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) "market," including institutional users like courts and major private consumers of ADR like businesses. All this is seen by some as part of the "mainstreaming" of mediation discussed by Joseph Folger's lead article in this Symposium. The primary question examined in this …

Starting Over: A Tentative Theory Exploring The Effects Of Past Relationships On Postbereavement Remarried Couples, Andrew Scott Brimhall, Michelle Engblom-Deglmann

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Using grounded theory methodology 24 participants were asked to discuss how the death of a previous spouse, either theirs or their partner’s, was currently affecting their second marriage. Participants were interviewed individually and as a couple. The central category was memories of the deceased spouse. Six additional categories emerged from the data: past spouse on pedestal, current/past comparison, insecurity of current spouse, curiosity about past spouse/relationship, partner’s response to curiosity, and impact on the current relationship. Existing literature, auditors, and participant feedback were all used to validate the results. Expanding on a tentative theory (Brimhall, Wampler, & Kimball, 2008), provisional …

The Use Of A Genetic Algorithm To Evolve Networks For A Natural Language Processing Task, Alexander E. Dimov '02 Jan 2002

The Use Of A Genetic Algorithm To Evolve Networks For A Natural Language Processing Task, Alexander E. Dimov '02

Honors Projects

In this project a novel approach was taken for performing a natural language task. The task requires a neural network to predict the grammatical category of the next word in a stream of sentences. There are two main reasons why this task is interesting. In natural language processing, it is sometimes very difficult to determine the grammatical category of a word in a sentence when that word could belong to different grammatical categories depending on the context. For example, the word "run" can either be a noun or a verb in a certain sentence. The ability to correctly determine the …

Ethics Counsel's Role In Combating The 'Ostrich' Tendency, Susan Saab Fortney Jan 2002

Ethics Counsel's Role In Combating The 'Ostrich' Tendency, Susan Saab Fortney

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

To illustrate the importance of ethics advisors playing an active role in building a law firm's ethical infrastructure, this article focuses on ethics problems related to hourly billing. Ethics experts who have studied hourly billing recognize attorneys' reluctance to report billing misconduct, In the book, THE HONEST HOUR, Professor William G. Ross refers to the inclination of attorneys to close their eyes when they suspect billing irregularities. Professor Lisa G. Lerman made a similar observation in noting that firm attorneys who share income may "turn a blind eye to misconduct" by another firm attorney.' Both Professors Lerman and Ross recommend …

Academic Attribution Style Of Tenth Grade Students With Attachment Problems, Kimberly Conrad Jan 2002

Academic Attribution Style Of Tenth Grade Students With Attachment Problems, Kimberly Conrad

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between attachment and attribution in adolescents. The question that will be answered in this study is is there a relationship between attachment (as measured by the Adolescent Attachment Questionnaire) and attribution ( as measured by the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire). There is not enough data in the literature at the present time to clearly support that there is a relationship. Data were collected by using two instruments, Adolescent Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ), (West, Rose, Spreng, Sheldon-Keller, & Adam, 1998), and Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire (Crandall, Katkovosky, & Crandall, …

Factors Affecting Performance On The Lahi- A Complex Continuous Performance Task, Daniel Kretchman Jan 2002

Factors Affecting Performance On The Lahi- A Complex Continuous Performance Task, Daniel Kretchman

Open Access Master's Theses

This experiment examined basic properties of the Lahi, a multi-target continuous performance task with three sections, used in R. Feuerstein's Leaming Propensity Assessment Battery. Signal detection theory was used to evaluate performance by undergraduate students on the measure. Results did not identify differences between the three possible multiple targets, when evaluated on their own. There were differences in performance, however, when the order of presenting the targets was changed between the different sections of the task, as well as differences over time for most of the alternate forms of the task. Implications for the clinical utility of this measure for …

Legal Ethics Advisors And The Interests Of Justice: Is An Ethics Advisor A Conscience Or A Co-Conspirator?, Roy D. Simon Jan 2002

Legal Ethics Advisors And The Interests Of Justice: Is An Ethics Advisor A Conscience Or A Co-Conspirator?, Roy D. Simon

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In this short paper, I cannot explore the full range of lawyer-client interactions. Nor can I develop a comprehensive theory, or a comprehensive set of rules, to tell lawyers when to follow, and when to resist, client instructions. I can, however, examine some aspects of attorney-client relations in my small corner of the world, where I often function as an ethics advisor to lawyers and law firms. My premise, which I believe Deborah Rhode would endorse, is that ethics advisors have an obligation, both to their clients and to the legal profession, to provide honest, straightforward answers to inquiries concerning …
