Lifestyle, Medical, And Socio-Structural Content In The Portrayal Of Heart Disease In The Print Media, Christina Jane Fuller Jan 2002

Lifestyle, Medical, And Socio-Structural Content In The Portrayal Of Heart Disease In The Print Media, Christina Jane Fuller

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this thesis, l examined how cardiovascular disease (CVD) is portrayed in magazines. Analyses of health in the mass media provide insight into the messages that society receives on areas such as disease, wellness, medicine, illness prevention, and health-promoting and health-damaging lifestyles. In this thesis, l reviewed literature on health promotion, population health, and mass media. Through content analysis I examined quantitative and qualitative differences in the portrayal of CVD in terms of lifestyle, medical, and socio-structural content. I compared articles from magazines that are associated with different socio-economic statuses (SE8), ages, and genders (n = 104). The findings illustrate …

The Planning Fallacy And Group Predictions: Are Groups More Or Less Biased Than Individuals?, Deanna L. Messervey Jan 2002

The Planning Fallacy And Group Predictions: Are Groups More Or Less Biased Than Individuals?, Deanna L. Messervey

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Research on the “planning fallacy" shows that people tend to make overly optimistic predictions about the time it will take to complete a task, despite knowing that similar tasks in the past have exceeded predicted completion times. Although the planning fallacy has been well documented in individuals, few researchers have examined how groups make predictions interactively. The main purposes of this thesis are to examine whether people make overly optimistic predictions for group projects and whether group discussion exacerbates this optimistic bias. In three studies, participants were asked to make predictions for an upcoming collaborative task alter engaging in group discussion …

'Skippers Of The Shore Crew': Women And A Fish Plant Closure (Labrador), Sheila M. Keefe Jan 2002

'Skippers Of The Shore Crew': Women And A Fish Plant Closure (Labrador), Sheila M. Keefe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The closure of the east coast cod fishery in 1992 resulted in the largest industry lay-off in the country, stripping 35,000 Newfoundlanders and Labradorians of their source of livelihood--l2,000 of whom were women, employed predominately in the processing sector. While the impacts upon Newfoundland women have been the subject of considerable research (e.g., CMHA, 1994), little to no information has been gathered about Labrador women displaced by the closure of fishery. This is a serious gap in the literature--one which the present study attempts to address. The present study examined how senior women fish plant workers in the Labrador Métis …

Proposed Amendments To Fed. R. Crim. P. 26: An Exchange: Remote Testimony, Richard D. Friedman Jan 2002

Proposed Amendments To Fed. R. Crim. P. 26: An Exchange: Remote Testimony, Richard D. Friedman

Articles

Recently, the Supreme Court declined to pass on to Congress a proposed change to Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 26 submitted to it by the Judicial Conference. In this Article, Professor Friedman addresses this proposal, which would allow for more extensive use of remote, video-based testimony at criminal trials. He agrees with the majority of the Court that the proposal raised serious problems under the Confrontation Clause. He also argues that a revised proposal, in addition to better protecting the confrontation rights of defendants, should include more definite quality standards, abandon its reliance on the definition of unavailability found in …

Looking Back On Planned Parenthood V. Casey, Christina B. Whitman

Articles

Scholarship that tells us what is really at stake in the lives of people affected makes the law honest and responsive. Whether or not it directly shapes doctrine, this type of scholarship can capture imagination and influence judgment. The Michigan Law Review has published some of the best of this work: Yale Kamisar's articles on coerced confessions, Terry Sandalow's essay on affirmative action, Joe Sax and Phillip Hiestand's description of the emotional impact of living in a slum, Martha Chamallas and Linda Kerber's demonstration of how injuries that uniquely befall women have been dismissed as merely emotional wrongs, and, most …

Not As Simple As Learning The Abc's: A Comment On Owasso Independent School District No. I-Ol1 V. Falvo And The State Of The Family Educational Rights And Privacy Act, Randi M. Rothberg

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the Supreme Court's rulings in Falvo and Owasso, which determined that peer grading practices do not violate FERPA as the records involved are not classified as education records. This highlights significant implications for student privacy rights and underscores the need for clarifying FERPA's definitions to prevent future legal disputes.

Third Party Visitation Statutes: Society’S Changing Views About What Constitutes A Family Must Be Formally Recognized By Statute, Beth Sherman Jan 2002

Third Party Visitation Statutes: Society’S Changing Views About What Constitutes A Family Must Be Formally Recognized By Statute, Beth Sherman

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

This Note begins by introducing the strong historical support for a parent’s fundamental liberty interest, protected by the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process Clause, to control the upbringing of his or her own child. It also examines the limitations placed on that right. Section two illustrates the need to balance these two perspectives when analyzing the current debate over nonparental visitation statutes. Section three addresses how the case of Troxel v. Granville reached the United States Supreme Court and the implications of the Court’s decision. Section four focuses on New York State by considering its nonparental visitation statutes, the effect of …

The 'Most Important And Fundamental' Distinction In Logic, G. C. Goddu Jan 2002

The 'Most Important And Fundamental' Distinction In Logic, G. C. Goddu

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In this paper I argue that the debate over the purported distinction between deductive and inductive arguments can be bypassed because making the distinction is unnecessary for successfully evaluating arguments. I provide a foundation for doing logic that makes no appeal to the distinction and still performs all the relevant tasks required of an analysis of arguments. I also reply to objections to the view that we can dispense with the distinction. Finally, I conclude that the distinction between inductive and deductive arguments is not one of the most important and fundamental ideas in logic, but rather is unnecessary.

Ability Of Native American Tribes To Waive Their Tribal Sovereign Immunity In Clear And Unequivocal Contracts To Arbitrate - C&(And)L Enterprises, Inc. V. Citizen Band Potawatomie Tribe Of Oklahoma, The, Emily J. Huitsing

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Native American tribes enjoy immunity from suits on contracts made on or off a reservation.2 A tribe is subject to suit only if it has clearly waived its immunity or Congress has expressly authorized the suit.' Tribal immunity was given to the tribes on the principle that tribes are sovereigns or quasi sovereigns enjoying immunity from judicial attack absent their consent.4 The purpose of tribal sovereignty, according to the Supreme Court, is to promote tribal economic development and self-sufficiency.5 Though the Court has expressed its dissatisfaction with the doctrine in light of increased tribal economic self-sufficiency through successful business ventures, …

Changes In Muscle Function And Motorneuron Excitability Of The Triceps Surae Following A Bout Of Fatiguing Eccentric Exercise, Mikala Pougnault

Theses : Honours

A reduction in capacity of the neuromuscular system associated with exercise can occur from a wide range of physiological and psychological factors. Many researchers have investigated neural activation during exercise, or the effects of muscle damage associated with eccentric exercise, but few have studied the prolonged effects of a bout of eccentric exercise on strength and motorneuron excitability. Eleven male and female subjects (aged 20-43 years) were tested to determine the effects of a fatiguing bout of eccentric exercise upon maximal isometric plantarflexion strength, motorneuron excitability, and neural activation of the soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG). The exercise consisted …

Can Goal Orientations Of Salespeople Predict Performance?, Rustica D. Badillo Jan 2002

Can Goal Orientations Of Salespeople Predict Performance?, Rustica D. Badillo

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The recent work of Sujan, Weitz, and Kumar brings into sharp focus two distinct goal orientations of salespeople: learning and performance. In the article entitled "Learning Orientation, Working Smart, and Effective Selling" (1994), the authors made two primary contributions to salesforce literature. They are: (1) the development and examination of the novel propositions that shed light on how supervisors influence the goal orientations of salespeople, and (2) the examination of whether supervisor's influence on salespeople's orientations is moderated by salesperson experience. The article's hypotheses were tested using data from salespeople in two Fortune 500 companies. The results support several of …

Sexually Dimorphic Behavioral Responses To Prenatal Dioxin Exposure, Rieko Hojo, Sander Stern, Grazyna Zareba, Vincent P. Markowski, Christopher Cox, James T. Kost, Bernard Weiss

Psychology

Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats received a single oral dose of 0, 20, 60, or 180 ng/kg 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin on day 8 of gestation. Each litter contributed a single male-female pair trained to press a lever to obtain food pellets under two operant behavior procedures. Initially, each lever press was reinforced. The fixed-ratio (FR) requirement was then increased every four sessions from the initial setting of 1 to values between 6 and 71. We then studied responses for 30 days under a multiple schedule combining FR 11 and another schedule requiring a pause of at least 10 sec between responses (DRL 10-sec). TCDD …

Recognizing The Interdependence Of Rights In The Antidiscrimination Context Through The World Conference Against Racism , Catherine Powell, Jennifer H. Lee Jan 2002

Recognizing The Interdependence Of Rights In The Antidiscrimination Context Through The World Conference Against Racism , Catherine Powell, Jennifer H. Lee

Faculty Scholarship

This background paper assesses the importance of integrating gender into efforts to address racial discrimination and related intolerance in the WCAR process. While this background paper primarily focuses on racial discrimination, the analysis may be applied to xenophobia and related intolerance where these experiences are "raced" experiences. Addressing these forms of intolerance in a comprehensive manner requires unmasking the ways in which race intersects with gender and other status. A gender analysis is needed to make racism more fully visible, because "racial discrimination does not always affect men and women equally or in the same way." Women often experience compounded …
