Empowering And Equipping The Laity In The South Caribbean Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Ray Henderson Walker Jan 2002

Empowering And Equipping The Laity In The South Caribbean Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Ray Henderson Walker

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Some pastors in the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists feel challenged by the ministry of the laity. One reason is the lack of a clear understanding of the biblical and theological perspectives on empowering and equipping the laity. Consequently, the potential of the laity is not fully utilized.

Method

Current literature was reviewed. This included books and articles on the principles, strategies, and programs which assist pastors to develop’ their empowering and equipping skills. A comparison was done between the ministry of the pastors and the laity in the South Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. An evaluation of …

Eating Disorders In The Oral Health Curriculum, Rita D. Debate, Deanne Shuman, Lisa A. Tedesco Jan 2002

Eating Disorders In The Oral Health Curriculum, Rita D. Debate, Deanne Shuman, Lisa A. Tedesco

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Due to the oral/systemic nature of eating disorders, this serious health issue requires comprehensive patient assessment and coordinated health treatment. The purpose of this study was to assess the breadth and depth of eating disorder and comprehensive care within the dental and dental hygiene curriculum. Survey data were collected from deans of U.S. dental programs (n=24) and dental hygiene program directors (n=94). Statistically significant differences were observed between dental programs (DP) and dental hygiene programs (DHP) as more DHP reported including anorexia nervosa (p<.001), bulimia nervosa (p<.001), and oral manifestations of eating disorders (p=.003) within their curricula. Clock hours dedicated to these topics ranged from seventeen to thirty-five minutes, with no statistically significant differences observed between DP and DHP. Only 58 percent of DP and 56 percent of DHP included patient communication skills specific to eating disorders. Moreover, DHP were observed dedicating more instruction time for this skill (p=.011). As greater emphasis is placed on oral/systemic health and the provision of comprehensive care, many oral health professionals may not be adequately trained to identify, provide education, and communicate with patients regarding the oral/systemic nature of eating disorders. The findings from this study indicate that there is a need for appropriate training to better prepare oral health professionals for comprehensive patient care.

Feasibility Study Of A Permanently Implanted Prosthetic Hand, Matt Williams Jan 2002

Feasibility Study Of A Permanently Implanted Prosthetic Hand, Matt Williams

Theses

The feasibility of a permanently implanted prosthetic hand was evaluated from both an internal biocompatibility and exterior mechanics point of view. A literature review of the issues involved in permanent implantation of a percutanious device was performed in the areas of bone interaction and fixation and neural interface control. A theoretical implant was designed for a 90th percentile male, using an HA-G-Ti composite material to provide a permanent base to which the hand could attach. Using a radial implant length of 1.87 inches and an ulna implant length of 1.32 inches, the simulated implant could withstand a push out force …

Differences In Coping Behavior Based On Epistemic Style, Lance Evans Jan 2002

Differences In Coping Behavior Based On Epistemic Style, Lance Evans

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite evidence supporting epistemic style as an influential personality factor in a variety of behaviors, the relevance of epistemic style in coping behavior has yet to be explored. Using Royce's model of epistemic style (Royce & Powell, 1983) and Lazarus' relational model of coping (Lazarus, 1999), the purpose of this study was to investigate differences in coping behavior based on epistemic style. Participants were 90 first-year undergraduate students residing in three freshman residence halls of a mid-sized, state university located in the Mid-Western U.S. Coping behavior was assessed using the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988) and epistemic …

Effects Of Theoretically Distinct Mathematics Interventions On Student Performance And Treatment Acceptability, Christopher Todd Arra Jan 2002

Effects Of Theoretically Distinct Mathematics Interventions On Student Performance And Treatment Acceptability, Christopher Todd Arra

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student mathematics achievement and teacher and student acceptability of academic interventions are important factors in determining the usage and effectiveness of academic interventions. The present study compared the effectiveness and acceptability of theoretically distinct mathematics interventions. The study lasted eight weeks. Eighteen teacher-candidates and 54 fourth grade students were exposed to one of three mathematical interventions. Teacher-candidates and students were asked to rate the acceptability of each intervention. A pretest-posttest analysis of students' mathematics achievement was also conducted. Results showed that both teacher-candidates and students preferred all interventions equally and that mathematics achievement did not significantly increase from pre- to …

Personality Assessment Inventory Profiles Of Therapy -Seeking Women With Childhood Sexual Abuse Histories, Susan Renee Schmidt

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the usefulness of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) in detecting the presence of clinical profile patterns in therapy-seeking women with histories of childhood sexual abuse. An outpatient sample of 214 female college students completed the PAI as part of a university counseling center intake procedure. Participants were evenly divided into two groups according to self-reported history of childhood sexual abuse. Results of a two-way multivariate analysis of variance for abuse history showed that the average scores across the PAI's 22 scales were higher for women with childhood sexual abuse histories than for women without such histories. A …

Social Support, Spirituality, Psychological Distress And Quality Of Life In Cancer Patients, Nicole Denise Alexander Jan 2002

Social Support, Spirituality, Psychological Distress And Quality Of Life In Cancer Patients, Nicole Denise Alexander

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cancer involves considerable physical and psychological complications. This reality, along with longer life expectancy, promotion of patient choice regarding life-sustaining measures, and concerns regarding distribution of health care funds highlight the need to focus on quality as well as quantity of life for individuals dealing with this disease. Although a relationship between psychosocial factors and quality of life in cancer patients has been speculated, the type and degree of influence is currently unclear. Using multiple regression analysis, potential predictors of quality of life for cancer patients were examined. Among the predictors considered were social support, spirituality, and psychological distress. The …

Stages Of Change And Self -Efficacy As Factors In Physiological Outcomes In Cardiac Rehabilitation, Maureen Casandra Pierce Jan 2002

Stages Of Change And Self -Efficacy As Factors In Physiological Outcomes In Cardiac Rehabilitation, Maureen Casandra Pierce

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sedentary lifestyle is one of the most prevalent risk factors for the development and maintenance of cardiovascular disease in the United States. Although a challenge, healthcare providers are in a unique position to promote the adoption and maintenance of regular exercise to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease. For this effort to be effective, research on exercise behavior in the context of cardiac rehabilitation is needed. Utilizing Prochaska and DiClemente's (1983) stages of change model and Schwarzer and Fuch's (1995) conceptualization of self-efficacy, the purpose of this study was aimed at identifying the impact of cardiac rehabilitation patients' initial exercise …

Excuse And Justification In The Law Of Fair Use: Commodification And Market Perspectives, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2002

Excuse And Justification In The Law Of Fair Use: Commodification And Market Perspectives, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

Over twenty years ago, the Journal of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. reprinted my article, "Fair Use as Market Failure" (82 Columbia Law Review 1600 (1982), available at: https://ssrn.com/abstract=3577724. That 1982 piece suggested that an underlying pattern governs the protean forms of "fair use", and I employed the notion of market failure to reveal and explain how the pattern functioned. Since then, some misunderstandings of my argument have arisen.

I am pleased to publish in this, the Fiftieth Anniversary issue of the Journal of the Copyright Society, a clarification – and partial amendment – of my position. As …

Foreword: Phase Ii Of The Genetics Revolution: Sophisticated Issues For Home And Abroad, Frances H. Miller Jan 2002

Foreword: Phase Ii Of The Genetics Revolution: Sophisticated Issues For Home And Abroad, Frances H. Miller

Faculty Scholarship

The distinguished health law and policy scholars we invite to contribute to the American Journal of Law & Medicine's annual symposium issue are given carte blanche to write about any aspect of the designated topic that appeals to them. The authors in this year's genetics symposium, The Genetic Revolution: Conflicts, Challenges and Conundra, are already well known for their work in the field-in fact three of them have just co-authored the only casebook specifically dedicated to the law, policy and ethics of geneticsl-and we deliberately asked them for relatively short pieces on the theory that taken together their articles would …

Authors, Publishers And Public Goods: Trading Gold For Dross, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2002

Authors, Publishers And Public Goods: Trading Gold For Dross, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The article seeks to clarify what is at stake - and what is not - in the litigation challenging the constitutional validity of the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA). First, the article distinguishes between the CTEA's retrospective term extension of copyright term and the retrospective extensions enacted by prior Congresses. The article suggests that the CTEA provisions are constitutionally questionable in ways that earlier retrospective extensions may not have been. To hold the CTEA unconstitutional would not make all other term extensions vulnerable.

Second, the article shows how non-creative physical activities such as digitization and film preservation have …

Procedural Justice Research And The Paucity Of Trials, Chris Guthrie Jan 2002

Procedural Justice Research And The Paucity Of Trials, Chris Guthrie

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Likewise, I do not mean to criticize Hensler's contribution to this volume. Although she is a prominent procedural justice researcher herself, she is certainly not responsible for the inattention given to the questions I have identified, and her measured conclusions about what might be inferred from the existing research are certainly appropriate. Indeed, I take Hensler' s broader point to be that courts should not mandate mediation simply because they believe as a matter of faith that mediation is a "better" process than others." Rather, courts should base their decisions, to the extent possible, on empirical evidence about the relative …

Finding Out If It Is True: Comparing Mediation And Negotiation Through Research, Craig A. Mcewen, Roselle L. Wissler Jan 2002

Finding Out If It Is True: Comparing Mediation And Negotiation Through Research, Craig A. Mcewen, Roselle L. Wissler

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In this article, we first use existing research evidence to contextualize more clearly the place of civil case mediation in the litigation process. When we understand civil mediation as part of adversarial litigation - rather than as distinct from it - we see the importance of comparing mediation and unassisted negotiation. Next, we discuss research and commentary on the barriers to negotiation and the ways in which mediation might help overcome them. This work provides a more pragmatic and empirically grounded perspective on the potential value of mediation than does "mediation ideology" and suggests a wide range of "hypotheses" to …
