A recent trend in so-called "second generation" legal commentary about the Internet suggests that, though it is an unparalleled communication medium and a means of engaging in global e-commerce, it is not an unmitigated force for good. Instead, the Net poses a fundamental danger to democracy. This trend takes shape in works by well-known cyberlaw theorists like Lawrence Lessig, Andrew Shapiro, and Neil Weinstock Netanel, but the most recent and most troubling criticism lies in Professor Cass Sunstein 's Republic.com. In this book, Professor Sunstein argues that perfect filtering of information on the Internet will lead to a fractured communications …

Predictably Incoherent Judgments, Cass R. Sunstein, Daniel Kahneman, Ilana Ritov, David Schkade

Articles

When people make moral or legal judgments in isolation, they produce a pattern of outcomes that they would themselves reject, if only they could see that pattern as a whole. A major reason is that human thinking is category-bound. When people see a case in isolation, they spontaneously compare it to other cases that are mainly drawn from the same category of harms. When people are required to compare cases that involve different kinds of harms, judgments that appear sensible when the problems are considered separately often appear incoherent and arbitrary in the broader context. Another major source of incoherence …

The term ‘fundamentalism’ means adherence to principles of one’s religion. Therefore, Islamic fundamentalism stands for a return to the doctrines of Islam in their original form as were practised in the medieval times. It could also mean idealising the historical past of Islam and calling for a return to ‘pure and original Islam’, which can be achieved through peaceful, lawful and cultural/spiritual means. In practice, the focus of Islamists has been Islamisation of the state rather than reform of the individuals. It has generated conflict as the Islamic fundamentalists seek to impose their will through coercion, violence and terror. Radical …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Outcomes And Impact Of Foster Parent Education, Andromeda Bellamy Jan 2002

A Qualitative Examination Of The Outcomes And Impact Of Foster Parent Education, Andromeda Bellamy

Honors Capstones

Utilizing a qualitative approach, exit interviews were conducted with eight foster mothers who participated in a parent education program called Listening to Children (LTC). LTC is unique in that it mirrors the strengths of predominant models of parent education but is based on a unique set of philosophical and methodological underpinnings that blend parent education and parent support groups. Analysis of the interviews yielded insight into what participants learned during the H20intervention, how it affected their foster parenting, whether the LTC program was unique, and if so, in what ways. Results suggest that foster parent education programs can lead to …

Multiple Perspectives On The Services Received And Funding For Students With Individual Transition Plans, Karoline A. Salvador

Honors Capstones

In the field of special education there is a constant battle between parents, students, and the school district. This is due to the rising costs of transitional services, and the lack of parent rights education that takes place in the school. The purpose of this thesis was to find multiple perspectives on parent rights and transition service delivery. These perspectives were discovered primarily through research articles. After looking at the research, it was decided that a book of parental rights should be composed. Informal interviews with transitional information took place in order to better understand the variety of transitional service …

Deaf Victims Of The Holocaust, David Volper Jan 2002

Deaf Victims Of The Holocaust, David Volper

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The years 1933-1945 were filled with great turmoil and inconsistency throughout Germany. As early as 1933, laws were enacted and passed that set in motion the sequence of events that would lead to World War II and the Holocaust. Adolf Hitler's rise to power in a country torn by inner conflict subsequently gave authority to those who adhered to the principles of eugenics, euthanasia, sterilizations, and other methods of"population control." By the late 1930s, the goal of public support of establishing a "master race" was widely accepted and lauded in Germany. While Hitler's influence and power was considerable, his master …
