Anxiolytic Effect Of Melatonin In Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Jonathan Bruce Santo, S. Lo, P. L'Esperance, D. B. Boivin
Anxiolytic Effect Of Melatonin In Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Jonathan Bruce Santo, S. Lo, P. L'Esperance, D. B. Boivin
Psychology Faculty Publications
Increases in anxiety levels during the late-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle form important diagnostic criteria of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) (1). Evidence exists to support the hypothesis that tolerance to endogenous levels of melatonin might occur during the luteal phase in PMDD (2, 3). It was hypothesized that slow release (SR) melatonin administration during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle of participants with PMDD could significantly lower anxiety levels measured by self-report.
Joining Forces: The Role Of Collaboration In The Development Of Legal Thought, Tracey E. George, Chris Guthrie
Joining Forces: The Role Of Collaboration In The Development Of Legal Thought, Tracey E. George, Chris Guthrie
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
For every reason to believe that collaboration has been influential... there is a countervailing reason to believe that it has played a minor role in the evolution of legal thought. It may be easy to bring to mind a handful of prominent collaborations, but most law review articles seem to be written by one author (notwithstanding their lengthy acknowledgment footnotes, suggesting that even single-author works are shaped by the insights and input of multiple scholars). And while it is true that legal scholars often collaborate on their practically oriented works, scholarly articles might not be well suited to collaboration.
Discrimination And Social Adjustment Of 'New Arrival Women' From Mainland China, San Kiu, Sunday Tsoi
Discrimination And Social Adjustment Of 'New Arrival Women' From Mainland China, San Kiu, Sunday Tsoi
Lingnan Theses
This research examines the scope and the extent of discrimination experienced by (New Arrival Women) NAW as well as its impact on their social adjustment in Hong Kong Special Administration Region (HKSAR). It has been argued that discrimination slow down the adjustment process. Institutionalized discrimination and individual discrimination are examined in relation to NAW social adjustment in the HKSAR society.
The research framework is based on the concepts of institutionalized and individual discriminations. Unfair Government policies being seen as a socio-structural factor results in institutionalized discrimination while the unsatisfactory outcomes arising from the interaction between NAW and LPRs (Local Permanent …
Juries, Hindsight, And Punitive Damages Awards: Reply To Richard Lempert, W. Kip Viscusi
Juries, Hindsight, And Punitive Damages Awards: Reply To Richard Lempert, W. Kip Viscusi
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Richard Lempert, a Professor of Law and Sociology at the University of Michigan criticized our recent article on judge and jury performance of a punitive damage judgment task, calling it a "failure of a social science case for change." Professor Lempert's depiction of our research is confusing and incorrect. However, because we believe a reading of only the Lempert critique can lead to a substantial misunderstanding of our research and its implications, we have written a reply.
Judging By Heuristic: Cognitive Illusions In Judicial Decision Making, Chris Guthrie, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Andrew J. Wistrich
Judging By Heuristic: Cognitive Illusions In Judicial Decision Making, Chris Guthrie, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Andrew J. Wistrich
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
The institutional legitmacy of the judiciary depends on the quality of the judgments that judges make. Even the most talented and dedicated judges surely make occasional mistakes, but the public expects judges to avoid making systematic errors that favor particular parties or writing opinions that embed these mistakes into the substantive law. Psychological research on human judgment, however, suggests that this expectation might be unrealistic.

A Three-Dimensional Model For The Use Of Expert Psychiatric And Psychological Evidence In False Confession Defenses Before The Trier Of Fact, Joshua E. Kastenberg
A Three-Dimensional Model For The Use Of Expert Psychiatric And Psychological Evidence In False Confession Defenses Before The Trier Of Fact, Joshua E. Kastenberg
Faculty Scholarship
Part I of this Article delineates a defendant's right to present voluntariness and credibility evidence against his or her confession. This section analyzes the basic constitutional framework of how a defendant can present this evidence and describes the traditional safeguards against false confessions. This background information provides a context for the overarching issue of expert testimony admissibility. Part II provides a basic understanding of differences between the psychiatric (medical model) and psychological (social model) approach to false confessions. It then examines the types of false confession defenses used by defendants and the interrogation techniques challenged by defendants. Part III reviews …

A Note On Job Mobility Among Workers With Disabilities, Marjorie L. Baldwin, Edward J. Schumacher
A Note On Job Mobility Among Workers With Disabilities, Marjorie L. Baldwin, Edward J. Schumacher
Health Care Administration Faculty Research
This article uses data from the 1990 and 1993 panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation to analyze relationships between disability status and job mobility. We identify individuals who experienced voluntary or involuntary job separations over a 20-month period and examine the effect of disability status on rates of job change and wage growth following a job change. The results show that disabled workers are more likely to experience involuntary job changes than are nondisabled workers, but there is little difference in the wage effects of job changes by disability status.
The Effects Of Family Structure, Education, And Religion On Contraceptive Decisions By Women In Their Early Twenties, Brigid K. Howard
The Effects Of Family Structure, Education, And Religion On Contraceptive Decisions By Women In Their Early Twenties, Brigid K. Howard
Student Work
Using the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth, this study investigates the effects of family structure, education, and religion on contraceptive use by never-married women aged 20-24 years. Included in the sample are sexually active women aged 20-24 who had never been married and were not cohabitating, who were not intending to become pregnant or were not pregnant, postpartum, or infertile for reasons other than for contraception at the time of the interview. Results indicate that Hispanic origin is related to use of less effective methods of contraception by sexually active women. Conversely, family structure influences contraceptive decisions in that …

Webquest: A Solution For Online Learning, Ellen W. Wiley
The Southeastern Librarian
Designing and developing meaningful and engaging online activities presents a challenge when preparing to teach a totally online course for the first time. How do you structure the activities so that the learner can focus on the content instead of the delivery system? How do you effectively communicate the content and activity instructions so that the learner can easily follow the flow of information? These are two of the questions that must be asked as one approaches the design and development of a totally online course.

Vojvodina, Serbia: Cornerstone Of Democratization And Multi-Ethnic Collaboration, John N. Lauer
Vojvodina, Serbia: Cornerstone Of Democratization And Multi-Ethnic Collaboration, John N. Lauer
Student Scholarship
On a cool sunny afternoon in February 2002, accompanied by my wife and an interpreter-guide, I drove south from Budapest toward the southern town of Szeged and the border with Serbia just beyond. While driving, I pondered what I would see and discover in Vojvodina, the former autonomous and still northern province of Serbia, and the place I had chosen to do fieldwork for my ethnographic research project. My research purpose was to study multiethnic cooperation within the context of Vojvodina autonomy in order to understand the circumstances of how and why such collaborative relationships between different ethnic groups work. …
Orwell And Huxley: Making Dissent Unthinkable, John N. Williams
Orwell And Huxley: Making Dissent Unthinkable, John N. Williams
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
In this paper I compare the fictional world depicted by Orwell’s 1984 with that of Huxley’s Brave New World from the point of view of an analytic philosopher. Neither novel should be read as predictions, the accuracy of which can be used to judge them. Rather, both attempt to portray what humanity could conceivably become. The authenticity of this conceivability is a necessary condition of the power of both works to raise central philosophical questions about the human condition. What is ethically wrong with control? How far can Man go in recreating himself? In what sense are these worlds anti-utopian? …

'You have known me for years, Lois' explains Superman, as I lay aside my copy of Crimmins’s example (1992). 'But there is something you have not yet discovered. You also know me under a disguise. You have not yet realized that this person is I in disguise. On that way of thinking about me, you have different opinions of me. In fact you think me an idiot.' I've just informed Superman that I accept his testimony on the strength of his intelligence. But I confess I don’t quite know how to acknowledge my acceptance of his final remark.

Human Resource Development Programs For Overseas Assignments In The Asia-Pacific: A Study Of Managers In Singapore, A. Ahad M. Osman-Gani, Wee Liang Tan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Asia-Pacific region form a major arena of increasing interest for overseas business operations. In this regard, human resource development (HRD) issues are found to play significant roles in major international business decisions. Yet little is known about the international HRD programs and practices employed by companies to train and develop managers for this dynamic region. This paper presents the empirical findings of a study on the relative importance of training on several key factors that are crucial to companies for their managers to succeed in overseas assignments in the Asia Pacific region. The study is based on a sample of …

National Culture And Entrepreneurship: A Review Of Behavioral Research, James C. Hayton, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Conceptual arguments for the association between cultural characteristics and entrepreneurship have existed for decades but only in the last 10 years has this relationship been the focus of empirical scrutiny. In this article, we review and synthesize the findings of 21 empirical studies that examine the association between national cultural characteristics and aggregate measures of entrepreneurship, individual characteristics of entrepreneurs, and aspects of corporate entrepreneurship. The study concedes that a predominant number of empirical studies have used Hofstede's conceptualization of national culture and that other domains have been underdeveloped. A preliminary model that integrates past findings is extended. The review …

The Personality Profile Of September 11 Hijack Ringleader Mohamed Atta, Aubrey Immelman
Psychology Faculty Publications
This paper presents the results of a posthumous, indirect assessment of the personality of Mohamed Atta, apparent ringleader in the September 11, 2001 terror attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, from the conceptual perspective of Theodore Millon.
Information concerning Mohamed Atta was collected from media reports in the one-month period following the attack and synthesized into a personality profile using the second edition of the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM-IV.
The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed on the …

Breastfeeding And The Supportive Workplace: Integration Of Women's Productive And Reproductive Lives, Rebekah A. Cardenas
Breastfeeding And The Supportive Workplace: Integration Of Women's Productive And Reproductive Lives, Rebekah A. Cardenas
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Although authorities advocate breastfeeding for at least six months as the ideal form of infant nutrition, employed mothers may experience barriers to breastfeeding. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this study examined the relationship between maternal employment, workplace support, and breastfeeding duration. In general, it was predicted that paid employment following childbirth would have a negative impact on breastfeeding duration. In addition, existence of workplace support such as flexibility, childcare, and/or healthcare benefits was predicted to positively impact breastfeeding durations as well as job satisfaction upon returning to work. Hierarchical linear regression analysis offered support for some …

Relationship Between Behavioral Measures In A Driving Simulator And Eeg Activity On Day-Shift And Night-Shift Workers, Jennifer L. Freeman
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Driver fatigue is a concern that demands a closer investigation into ways of detection and populations at risk. This study examined the relationship between EEG activity and several driving behaviors, as well as differences between day-shift and nightshift workers. Twenty adults, five males and ten females between the ages of 18 and 45, participated in this experiment. Participants included 10 day-shift and 10 night-shift workers. Participants were wired for EEG recording and asked to drive in a 1-hour highway-driving scenario in a driving simulator. Relative powers of alpha, theta and beta were recorded and an EEG index of alertness was …
