Interracial Couples Experience Of Leisure: A Social Network Approach, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D.
Interracial Couples Experience Of Leisure: A Social Network Approach, Dan K. Hibbler Ph.D.
School of Continuing and Professional Studies Faculty and Staff Works
There has been a significant amount of research that has indicated divergent
patterns of leisure participation among African Americans and European Americans;however, there has been a paucity of research that addresses the leisure patterns of interracial couples and families. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the leisure patterns of interracial couples and families, specifically African American and European American couples. A qualitative design was employed to gather in-depth interview data from six couples. The findings indicated that the interracial couples felt socially isolated in various aspects of daily life, including work, family, and leisure. The primary cause …

Cookie Cutter Syndrome: Legal Reform Assistance Under Post-Communist Democratization Programs, The, Cynthia Alkon
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This article begins with a brief background of ADR, democratization programs, and legal reform programs. Section Three describes the Cookie Cutter Syndrome and examines the assumptions that shape legal reform efforts and that impact if and how ADR is used. Section Four examines how legal and judicial reform programs could look more broadly at using various forms of ADR to more effectively change the legal cultures in post-communist societies. The article concludes that legal reform assistance needs to further individualize programs for the conditions in specific countries, and that assistance programs should more fully integrate ADR. I do not recommend …
Retaining Bargained-For Finality And Judicial Review In Labor Arbitration Decisions: Dual Interests Preserved In Major League Baseball Players Association V. Garvey - Major League Baseball Players Assn. V. Garvey, Emily J. Huitsing
Journal of Dispute Resolution
Arbitration has for years been the principal means of labor dispute resolution. As a part of labor contracts, workers agree to arbitrate disputes with their employers, bargaining for this forum as their choice method of dispute resolution. Occasionally, however, the decision of an arbitrator strays far from what a court believes the outcome of the dispute between employer and employee should be. In these cases, a conflict arises between the finality and stability of the bargained-for arbitrator's decision and the need for judicial upset of clearly errant arbitral decisions

Global CWD Repository
This study objectives were to further develop definitions and lend support to an operational policy regarding mine victim assistance and integrated mine action. It is also intended to contribute to the formulation of coherent and comprehensive mine action programmes involving integrated victim assistance and in such, strengthen the role of the United Nations as the leaders in both policy and co-ordination for all mine-related activities.

Time-Based Work-Family Conflict: Myth Or Reality?, Karyn H. Bernas
Time-Based Work-Family Conflict: Myth Or Reality?, Karyn H. Bernas
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The present study examined a time-based model of work-family conflict for a sample of 176 working women with childcare responsibilities. Building on the work of Edwards and Rothbard (2000) and role theory, a model was proposed to test the specific variables that define time-based work-family conflict. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to test the proposed hypotheses. Contrary to assumptions about time-based conflict, the results suggest that role time has a very limited impact on work-family conflict. Variables that were related to role performance and satisfaction included traditional gender role expectations, family involvement, family instrumental support, leader-member exchange, role overload, and …

The Cookie Cutter Syndrome: Legal Reform Assistance Under Post-Communist Democratization Programs, Cynthia Alkon
Faculty Scholarship
Communism ended in most parts of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union over ten years ago. However, the legal and judicial systems in many of these nations seemingly defy reform efforts. What I call in this article the "Cookie Cutter Syndrome" describes the standard approach Western nations developed to assist legal reform in the former Communist world.' Despite vastly different conditions in these countries, the model for judicial reform remains very similar, and is rooted in litigation and adversarial practices. The question of whether an adversarial-based approach is appropriate becomes even more acute as assistance efforts focus more on …

Searching For A Sense Of Control: The Challenge Presented By Community Conflicts Over Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, Nancy A. Welsh, Barbara Gray
Faculty Scholarship
The growth in the number of concentrated animal feeding operations ("CAFOs"), particularly those involved in swine production, has brought with it increased community concern and outright conflict in many communities across the United States.' Most commentators have focused upon anticipated outcomes to explain the contentiousness of CAFO-related disputes.2 Meanwhile, even though the social dynamics that contribute to the development and escalation of conflicts over CAFOs parallel those exhibited in other kinds of community conflicts, little research has systematically examined the social dynamics associated with CAFO conflicts. One exception to this deficiency is recent work conducted by a team of researchers …
Bush V. Gore And The French Revolution: A Tentative List Of Some Early Lessons, Sanford Levinson
Bush V. Gore And The French Revolution: A Tentative List Of Some Early Lessons, Sanford Levinson
Law and Contemporary Problems
Levinson examines the Supreme Court's decision in "Bush v. Gore" as an entry-point into understanding American constitutional culture. "Law," as people ordinarily think of it, may be much less important than people might believe (or hope) with regard to controlling politics. But "law" in another way may have Americans gripped within a constitutional iron cage that makes it next to impossible to engage in a cogent discussion of what might ail contemporary American polity and, concomitantly, what might be needed by way of reforms.
Deliberation Disconnected: What It Takes To Improve Civic Competence, Arthur Lupia
Deliberation Disconnected: What It Takes To Improve Civic Competence, Arthur Lupia
Law and Contemporary Problems
Lupia argues that the suggestions of those who advocate deliberative democracy to incorporate more and more law-like precepts into politics will not achieve the ultimate ambition of deliberative theory, which is to have the resolution of disputes turn on nothing but the force of the better argument. Lupia discusses mechanisms to build civic competence by creating conditions in which the better argument has an improved change of winning the battle.

Rapidly Growing Mycobacterial Pulmonary Infection In Association With Severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Abdullah F. Al-Mobeireek
Rapidly Growing Mycobacterial Pulmonary Infection In Association With Severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Abdullah F. Al-Mobeireek
Saudi Medical Journal
Pulmonary infection due to rapidly growing mycobacteria (Runyan group IV) is uncommon and may be overlooked or misdiagnosed. Esophageal disorders have been recognized as a potential risk factor predisposing for this infection. A 35-year-old Sri Lankan patient, with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease and a hiatus hernia, contracted a pulmonary infection with Mycobacterium fortuitum-chelonae. He had severe airway obstruction and focal bronchiectasis, and responded to treatment with ciprofloxacin and clarithromycin. The case is reported to alert clinicians to the pathogenic potential of these organisms and to the prompt institution of appropriate chemotherapy once infection is recognized.
Predicting Positive Academic Intentions Among African American Males And Females, Larry Davis
Predicting Positive Academic Intentions Among African American Males And Females, Larry Davis
Center for Social Development Research
Significant attention has been given to the educational shortcomings of African American students, especially compared to their white counterparts. By contrast, this study assesses positive predictors of educational success among 243 African-American high school sophomores. Because African American females typically have higher educational outcomes than their male peers, this study also examined these predictors by gender to better understand factors that may contribute to these differences. the study employed the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as a conceptual framework and also examined students’ self-perceptions in four domains: self-esteem, racial self-esteem, academic self-efficacy, and the importance of school completion to self. …

Characterization Of Pathogenic Mutations In 21-Hydroxylase Gene Of Pakistani Patients With Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia And Their Family Members--A Preliminary Report, A H. Khan, M I. Nasir, T Moatter
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Objective:
To characterize specific mutations within the 21-hydroxylase gene (CYP21-B) using ARMS-PCR assay in patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and to compare it with that reported in other populations.
Subjects and Methods:
Five families, having an index case with CAH diagnosed on the basis of clinical and biochemical findings volunteered to give blood samples for analysis. A strategy, based on ARMS-PCR (Amplified Refractory Mutation System) was employed for the detection of mutations in 21-hydroxylase gene. The products of ARMS-PCR were resolved on agarose gels and the PCR products were visualized over ultra violet illumination.
Results:
Twenty-six specimens were analyzed …
