Brand Name Translation: Language Constraints, Product Attributes And Consumer Perceptions In East And Southeast Asia, Frank C. Hong, Anthony Pecotich, Clifford J. Shultz Jul 2002

Brand Name Translation: Language Constraints, Product Attributes And Consumer Perceptions In East And Southeast Asia, Frank C. Hong, Anthony Pecotich, Clifford J. Shultz

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between foreign brand name translation and product-related cues-such as physical quality, perceived origin, and brand name-on consumers' perceived quality, price, and purchase intentions. In translations from alphabetic to character-based languages such as Mandarin, two generic methods of brand name translation are available: (1) direct translation for the meaning of the brand name and (2) phonetic translation for the pronunciation of the brand name. The results from a series of structurally related experiments designed to investigate the effects of brand name translation in a cross-cultural context indicate that for an …

After Ellerth: The Tangible Employment Action In Sexual Harassment Analysis, Susan Grover Jul 2002

After Ellerth: The Tangible Employment Action In Sexual Harassment Analysis, Susan Grover

Faculty Publications

In this Article, Professor Grover argues that courts too readily allow employers to avoid vicarious liability far supervisors' unlawful sexual harassment of subordinates. The Article explores the breadth of the affirmative defense first introduced in the Supreme Court's 1998 cases of Faragher v. Boca Raton and Burlington Indus., Inc. v. Ellerth. That defense clears an employer of liability for a supervisor's unlawful sexual harassment if (a) the employer exercised reasonable care to prevent and correct promptly any sexually harassing behavior, and (b) the plaintiff employee unreasonably failed to take advantage of any preventive or corrective opportunities provided by the employer …

Agent-Based And Integrated Assessment Modelling For Incorporating Social Dynamics In The Management Of The Meuse In The Dutch Province Of Limburg, Jorg Krywkow, Pieter Valkering, Jan Rotmans, Anne Van Der Veen Jul 2002

Agent-Based And Integrated Assessment Modelling For Incorporating Social Dynamics In The Management Of The Meuse In The Dutch Province Of Limburg, Jorg Krywkow, Pieter Valkering, Jan Rotmans, Anne Van Der Veen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The European project FIRMA (Freshwater Integrated Resource Management with Agents) aims to improve water resource planning by combining agent-based modelling and integrated assessment to describe physical, hydrological, social and economic aspects of water resource management in an integrated way. This paper describes an approach that couples an agent-based model with an integrated assessment model as a conceptual framework. The aspired outcome of the model is to highlight the consequences of agent activities on each other as well as on the environment. The aim is to provide a DSS for decision makers in a water management situation. The case study presented …

Hoofs - A Multi-Scale, Agent-Based Simulation Framework For Studying The Impact Of Grazing Animals On The Environment, J. A. Beecham, S. P. Oom, C. P. D. Birch Jul 2002

Hoofs - A Multi-Scale, Agent-Based Simulation Framework For Studying The Impact Of Grazing Animals On The Environment, J. A. Beecham, S. P. Oom, C. P. D. Birch

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

An agent based system (HOOFS) has been developed in order to examine the interactions between foraging animals and a spatially explicit description of the environment, including vegetation growth processes. HOOFS makes use of the agent-based approach to develop a model of foraging in which animal decision making processes are explicitly modelled. The model has evolved from one where foraging decisions are based on a simple biased random walk model with an information weighting parameter, through one in which animals decide between direct walking towards an object as against continuous foraging, ending with a model where memory is used. The model …

Modelling Of The Collective Decision Making Process For Compact Manufacture Organisation, D. N. Svirsky Jul 2002

Modelling Of The Collective Decision Making Process For Compact Manufacture Organisation, D. N. Svirsky

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper addresses the organisation and management of compact (i.e. unsuperfluous resources) systems. The definition of compact manufacturing system (CMS) as well as the basic principles and general algorithms of its design are given. It is shown that the difficult task of designing of a system is effectively solved by a "collective intelligence" system using concurrent engineering. The author offers to use the tensor analogy for collective intelligence system development. Thus, production (its mathematical model) is a semantic invariant of a manufacturing sector of its life cycle. The production information description is mapped into the systems of co-ordinates appropriate to …

Agent-Based Simulation Of An Environmental Action Campaign: Changing People's Behaviour Via Their Inner Contradictions, Hans-Joachim Mosler Jul 2002

Agent-Based Simulation Of An Environmental Action Campaign: Changing People's Behaviour Via Their Inner Contradictions, Hans-Joachim Mosler

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Everyone has inner contradictions, and particularly in the area of the environment, many people act in ways that contradict their intentions. Measures that make people aware of these discrepancies trigger inner processes that can lead to changes in behaviour. In an action campaign promoting voluntary slower driving speeds in a Swiss municipality, our use of measures that confronted people with contradictions resulted in a remarkable reduction of average driving speeds. The processes triggered in persons during the campaign were simulated by means of an agent-based simulation. To this end, we developed a model based on the social psychological theory of …

Agent Based Simulation In Integrated Assessment And Resources Management, Claudia Pahl-Wostl Jul 2002

Agent Based Simulation In Integrated Assessment And Resources Management, Claudia Pahl-Wostl

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Resource management problems have become more and more complex. The traditional approach to solving isolated environmental problems with technological fixes and end-of-pipe solutions has started to shift towards a more thoughtful and integrated attitude. Hence it becomes more and more important to develop appropriate means for representing the human dimension in integrated models and in the development of resource management regimes. This involves the development of integrated approaches to problem solving and thus to include as well stakeholder perspectives. Stakeholder should be included in the process of developing and adopting any resource management plan. In order to improve stakeholder-based policy …

The Effect Of Color As A Visual Aid In Mathematics Instruction, Jennifer L. Valinote

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if fifth grade students who were exposed to colorful symbols and numbers during mathematics instruction would have significantly higher achievement than those students who were taught without the use of colorful symbols and numbers. The sample used in this investigation consisted of two heterogeneous fifth grade mathematics classes. Students in both groups were given pretests on the multiplication and division of fractions. After the pre-test the subjects that comprised the experimental group received a three week treatment. The subjects that comprised the control group were taught the same lessons, yet not exposed …

Multi-Agent Simulations As A Tool For The Assessment Of Urban Microclimate And Its Effect On Pedestrian Behaviour, Michael Bruse Jul 2002

Multi-Agent Simulations As A Tool For The Assessment Of Urban Microclimate And Its Effect On Pedestrian Behaviour, Michael Bruse

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The urban canopy layer is characterised by a specific climate which significantly differs from theaverage regional climate conditions. Especially inside urban structures such as street canyons, shopping mallsor public places, the local microclimate depends directly on the physical properties of the surrounding surfacesand objects, producing well-known effects such as wind speed decrease, local jets, increased turbulence orincreased thermal loads. These phenomena can have a strong influence on the comfort of pedestrians usingthese areas for different tasks of urban life or leisure activities. Assessing urban climate means to answer thequestion, how the citizens feel under the given circumstances and to decide, …

An Experimental Investigation Of Direct And Indirect Viewing Of A Remote Manipulation, Stephen N. Plishka Jul 2002

An Experimental Investigation Of Direct And Indirect Viewing Of A Remote Manipulation, Stephen N. Plishka

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to evaluate direct and indirect viewing of a remote manipulation. With continued exploration of inner and outer space, the ability to directly manipulate objects is lost due to the nature of operating in harsh environments. Remote viewing and operation of equipment is used in such things as the space shuttle manipulator arm, orthoscopic surgery, undersea exploration, and hazardous material management. Most of these operations do not have the luxury of direct viewing. This study will compare the effects of direct viewing vs. indirect viewing from three different viewing distances of 20cm, 60cm and 100cm.

Contradictions, Open Secrets And Feminist Faith In Enlightenment, Heather Lauren Hughes Jul 2002

Contradictions, Open Secrets And Feminist Faith In Enlightenment, Heather Lauren Hughes

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Many feminists target ignorance of domestic violence as the main reason for judicial resistance to decisions that would punish abusers and redress battered women's harms. But feminist demands to educate courts - to create, for example, a reformed tort law system in which courts understand and take into account the complex situation of battered women litigants - seek an epistemological grounding from which to adjudicate the intractable contradictions in both legal discourse and cultural discourse about women. Domestic violence continues to co-exist with public condemnation of such violence by feminists and some lawmakers. Domestic violence is an open secret in …

The sixteen women interviewed are successful and productive attorneys. Their stories show these women lawyer's ability to find solutions to work-family issues. They are super women, managing rewarding careers, marriage, family, and community responsibilities. Women have found workplaces that accommodate conflicting demands, and thus allow for a balanced life. They have realized contentment in their professional and personal lives, but this research suggests a persistence of role conflict, a clash between their ideals and their …

The Seduction Of Power: An Analogy Of Incest And Antebellum Slavery, Lisa Haberman Jul 2002

The Seduction Of Power: An Analogy Of Incest And Antebellum Slavery, Lisa Haberman

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This commentary discusses incest as a civil action authorized by the Thirteenth Amendment's prohibition of slavery. Slavery is the act of overcoming another person's personal power by fraud. It is a trespass on the living trust of another that usurps their inalienable right to self, or liberty. The illicit power exchange aggrandizes one at the expense of the other. The Thirteenth Amendment declared that slavery shall not exist in the United States. The Supreme Court then authorized Congress to legislate against private "discrimination that perpetuates the badges and incidents of slavery." In response, Congress enacted Title 42 Section 1983 of …

Parent Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Varying Disabilities, Anita L. Scialli Jul 2002

Parent Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding For Children With Varying Disabilities, Anita L. Scialli

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Disabilities affect 54 million people and 4.4 million children in the U.S. and are of importance to special education faculty (Center for Disease Control 2000). A survey design examines the effectiveness of human-animal interaction, specifically horseback riding, in children with varying disabilities.

Therapeutic horseback riding as an animal assisted therapy, aims to promote mind and body integration through movement (psychomotricity) and the human-animal bond (Delta Society, 2001a; Spink, 1993, All, Loving & Crane, 1999). Effectiveness is measured by parent assessment of improvement in 67 child behaviors resulting from child participation in horseback riding, using a new Horseback Riding Survey. Behaviors …
