Exploring The Relevance And Contribution Of Mediation To Peace-Building, Jacob Bercovitch, Ayse Kadayifci
Exploring The Relevance And Contribution Of Mediation To Peace-Building, Jacob Bercovitch, Ayse Kadayifci
Peace and Conflict Studies
The paper considers the nature and characteristics of peace-building as an approach to conflict. It suggests that mediation should be seen as a particularly important aspect of peace-building efforts, and one that may be used at different phases of a conflict. The paper develops a framework for analyzing the circumstances under which mediation may contribute to peace-building. The framework lays emphasis on contextual and perceptual dimensions. The paper argues that mediation, properly utilized, can achieve not just a settlement of a conflict, but facilitate, in the longer run, a full transformation of relations. Any successful program of peace-building requires some …

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Any good mine action campaign will consider victim assistance. Yet there persist certain myths, which if not dealt with, make planning and conducting a victim assistance activity difficult at best. Anyone who wants to understand landmine victim assistance and further its cause should take heed of the following “myths” and plan accordingly.
School Personnel Perceptions Of Elementary Student-To-Student Sexual Harassment: Implications For Policy And Practice, Catherine J. Tullis Cunningham
School Personnel Perceptions Of Elementary Student-To-Student Sexual Harassment: Implications For Policy And Practice, Catherine J. Tullis Cunningham
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The literature base regarding student-to-student sexual harassment is an area that has been evolving within the last decade. Early studies sought to document the occurrence of this phenomenon in schools, and describe the nature of sexual harassment among students (Fineran, 1996; Lee, Croninger, Linn, & Chin; and Roscoe, Strouse, & Goodwin, 1994). Other studies focused on the perceptions of students to perceived incidences of sexual harassment (Loredo, Reid, & Deaux, 1995; Tata, 1993) and how education and prevention programs may help address inappropriate responses by educators to allegations of sexual harassment (Cohan, Hergenrother, Johnson, Mandel, & Sawyer, 1996; Larkin, 1994; …

An Analysis Of The Role Of Regional Safe School Program Administrators, Bobbi Mattingly
An Analysis Of The Role Of Regional Safe School Program Administrators, Bobbi Mattingly
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1996, legislation created the Regional Safe Schools Program in Illinois. Alternative public school programs were established for disruptive or violent students who were unable or unwilling to conform themselves to the expectations of a traditional school setting. There has been limited research on alternative education administration. The purpose of this research was to study RSSP administrators to determine their leadership type, the effect of organizational culture on their leadership approach, and their beliefs and dispositions of alternative education. The problems of the study were approached from the conceptual framework of a system that interlocks alternative education, educational administration and …
When Do They Choose The Reading Center? Promoting Literacy In A Kindergarten Classroom, Susan K. Green, Clair Britt, Patsy Parker
When Do They Choose The Reading Center? Promoting Literacy In A Kindergarten Classroom, Susan K. Green, Clair Britt, Patsy Parker
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This action research project investigated activities designed to encourage children to visit the reading center in a kindergarten classroom. Three interventions were implemented on alternating days. Analyses suggested that these interventions led to increased voluntary use of the reading center. The days the intern read a story produced the most visits. This process of systematic data collection also increased monitoring of the children with the lowest literacy skills and provided opportunities to tailor literacy activities to their interests.

Inter-Firm Networking Propensity In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (Smes), Jean-Marie Nkongolo-Bakenda
Inter-Firm Networking Propensity In Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises (Smes), Jean-Marie Nkongolo-Bakenda
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
In the past decade, market globalization has not only been a threat for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but also an opportunity to expand their activities in many countries (Murphy and al., 1991). In fact, some of SMEs are worldwide leaders in their sectors (Simon, 1990; Entreprise, 1995). Moreover, few of these worldwide SME leaders started businesses directly on an international level (Christensen, 1991; Brush, 1992; McDougall and al., 1994). This suggests that these SMEs use many processes to overcome resource and competency constraints, which would otherwise impede the success of a transnational business in the new global environment (Barlett …

Entrepreneurship, Innovation And Growth: The David-Goliath Symbiosis, William J. Baumol
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Investment in innovation in industrialized economies increasingly is taken over by large firms that operate their own R&D divisions and transform technological change into a routine bureaucratized process. Powerful competitive forces require firms to do this for survival. But such routinized innovation has not replaced the individual independent innovator, the traditional source of technical change. The latter have tended to provide the more revolutionary breakthroughs, to which corporate research has added reliability, enhanced power and ease of utilization. Thus, both make a vital contribution to growth. While the results of big business research are often less spectacular, they have typically …

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Whereas the last issue of the journal concentrated more on entrepreneurial finance, this issue presents a few studies concentrating on business ventures in the United States, the emerging Polish economy and the developed economy of Italy. Small firms are a powerful economic force in the economies of the United States, Italy and Poland. According to the United States Small Business Administration (SBA), small firms are defined as those having 500 or fewer employees. Firms of this size represent 99 percent of all firms in the U.S. These business ventures generate the majority of net new jobs and are a major …

Many indicators are helpful in improving statistical performance for forecasting and policy analysis. We do believe, however, no single indicator (or type of indicator) can do the necessary work by itself. Any new finding is likely to make a better contribution in combination with others that have been found to be useful. Timeliness, flexibility, and foresight are important properties of indicators, and we are especially interested in information that reflects subjective feelings of participants in the economy. Results of surveys covering consumers, producers or managers are useful in forecasting major macroeconomic variables, like personal consumption expenditures and personal income. Preliminary …

Why New Ventures Grant Employee-Stock-Options, Elli Kraizberg, Vassilios N. Gargalas
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
As of 1998, nine percent of the shares of all firms in the US, primarily young and small ones, have been owned, essentially by about 17 million employees. The recent trend of new ventures to grant company-wide stock options plans is an alignment of the interests of management, shareholders, and non-managerial employees. This paper empirically explores the hypothesis that company-wide stock options plans primarily serve the interests of the firm?s management. This is true, whether or not, management owns a stake in the firm?s equity, though the degree of his or her motivation varies depending on the size of his/her …

Environmental Work And Peace Work: The Palestinian-Israeli Case, Julia Chaitin, Fida Obeidi, Sami Adwan, Dan Bar-On
Peace and Conflict Studies
This paper, based on a larger study that was carried out by a joint Palestinian – Israeli research team before and during the Al Aqsa Intifada, examines Israeli and Palestinian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that have worked on joint environmental projects. We focus here on three jointly run Palestinian – Israeli NGOs, 16 Israeli organizations and 12 Palestinian organizations that engaged in cooperative work, looking at the kind of work they did, their perceptions of the causes of environmental damage and its connection to the conflict, their perceptions of the roles of NGOs within their societies, and obstacles encountered in cooperative …

A Method For Modeling Low-Probability, High- Consequence Risk Events: Vessel Traffic On The Lower Mississippi River, George Wooddell, Robert Gramling, Craig J. Forsyth
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "A variety of commodities, from chlorine to corn and petroleum to passengers, are transported on the lower Mississippi River regularly. Corn, wheat and coal are the most commonly carried commodities. From a human health and safety perspective, these are relatively benign products in that a vessel accident and spill of these are not directly hazardous to people, whatever other ecological disturbances may ensue. However, over eighty million tons of petroleum products are transported on the river annually. Over a million tons of liquid natural gas traverse the river through the center of New Orleans. Additionally, over 400,000 tons of …

A Battle Over Birth "Control": Legal And Legislative Employer Prescription Contraception Benefit Mandates, C. Keanin Loomis
A Battle Over Birth "Control": Legal And Legislative Employer Prescription Contraception Benefit Mandates, C. Keanin Loomis
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
Under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), employers are prohibited from discriminating against women by treating pregnancy and childbirth different from other medical conditions. Employers who offer medical benefits to their employees have thus been required to cover pregnancy-related medical costs on the same terms as other medical coverage. The cost of prescription contraception, however, has generally not been covered by employer-sponsored medical plans, even while other prescription drugs were. This Note examines the recent case of Erickson v. Bartell Drug Co., which challenged this practice of excluding prescription contraception coverage as discriminatory under the PDA, and argues that further federal …

The Use Of Psychological State Terms By Late Talkers At Age 3, Eliza Carlson Lee, Leslie Rescorla
Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship
The use of psychological state words during mother-child play sessions at age 3 was examined in 31 children diagnosed with delayed expressive language at 24-31 months and 21 age-matched typically developing comparison children. Children and mothers in the late talker group made more references to physiological states and fewer references to cognitive states than the children and mothers in the typically developing comparison group. The children's use of cognitive terms correlated significantly with measures of language ability, including mean length of utterance, Index of Productive Syntax score, and use of propositional complements, as well as with their mothers' use of …

Does Nationality Affect Job Satisfaction?, Furqan Qamar, Talal Al Junaibi
IIMB Management Review
Job satisfaction and the factors that contribute to it are well-researched phenomena. Despite this, however, theories of job satisfaction are still not well perfected. Research in the field falls into five categories based on the causes of satisfaction they seek to establish: need fulfilment models, discrepancy models, value attainment models, equity models and trait component models. The last category includes studies that investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and the cultural and ethnic background of employees. Studies in this area report contradictory findings. Furqan Qamar and Talal Al Junaibi survey the literature and find that though several studies have been …

Ethics For Business : Drawing On Indian Values, S K Chakraborty
IIMB Management Review
Prof S K Chakraborty of the Management Centre for Human Values, IIM Calcutta, and author of the Management Ethics Omnibus, shares the essence of his enquiry into the field for over two decades. To the basic question from students and managers as to what there is in ethics for them, teachers must communicate that ethics has fundamental existential payoffs. Especially in today’s fast-paced world, where patience is no longer a virtue and ‘false gospels’ such as rank ordering and corporate gladiatorism are being embraced in toto by the Indian intellectual elite, without pausing to reflect on their own tradition and …

Business Ethics : The Mindtree Perspective, S Janakiraman
IIMB Management Review
Right at its inception, says S Janakiraman, one of the co-founders of MindTree Consulting, it was realised at MindTree that implanting ethical corporate values was absolutely essential for long-term strategic success. While their mission statement — ‘Deliver business-enabling solutions and technologies by creating partnerships with our customers in a joyous environment for our people’—is the unifying force between the business and its customers, their DNA—Imagination, Action and Joy — nurtures and aligns people, and builds the emotional and psychological ecology of the organisation. Their value statement —‘We are a Caring, Learning, Achieving, Sharing and Socially responsible organisation (CLASS)’— connotes integrity …
