Reading Mastery Versus Word Study Instruction As It Pertains To Third Graders' Reading Achievement Scores, Mia Sullivan
Reading Mastery Versus Word Study Instruction As It Pertains To Third Graders' Reading Achievement Scores, Mia Sullivan
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study was conducted in order to compare two phonics-based approaches to teaching reading. The two approaches were Reading Mastery (SRA Macmillan/McGraw-Hill, 1995) and Word Study (Bear et al. 1996). While Reading Mastery has been compared to other reading methods to examine the effectiveness of instruction with reading achievement measures, there are no studies that compare Word Study to other methods of reading instruction. The purpose of the present study was to compare Reading Mastery and Word Study instruction groups in terms of reading achievement scores. This study included 36 third grade students, 18 in each group. All students were …

Traditional And Nontraditional Foster Parenting, Angela M. Baranzelli-Yoder
Traditional And Nontraditional Foster Parenting, Angela M. Baranzelli-Yoder
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Foster parents in nontraditional foster care programs receive more extensive, ongoing training and support than foster parents in traditional foster care programs. This study examined whether differences exist in the levels of perceived parenting stress, satisfaction, and efficacy among traditional and nontraditional foster parents. Twenty-four foster parents completed the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the Parenting Sense of Competence scale (PSOC). Nontraditional foster parents reported higher levels of overall parenting stress and lower levels of foster parent role satisfaction than did traditional foster parents. However, response profiles indicated that nontraditional foster parents had children with more emotional and behavioral problems …

Studying Personality Traits Across Cultures: Philippine Examples, A. Timothy Church, Marcia S. Katigbak
Studying Personality Traits Across Cultures: Philippine Examples, A. Timothy Church, Marcia S. Katigbak
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Trait perspectives are dominant in the study of personality cross-culturally. We review the questions addressed by researchers who study personality traits across cultures, including, among others, whether traits are used in all cultures to understand persons and their behavior, the universality versus culture-specificity of traits, the validity of imported and indigenous measures of personality traits, and the meaningfulness of trait comparisons across cultures. We then summarize evidence relevant to these questions in one collectivistic culture, the Philippines. Overall, personality research in the Philippines supports the applicability of traits and trait theory as a basis for understanding persons and their behavior …
Kluckhohn And Strodtbeck's Values Orientation Theory, Michael D. Hills
Kluckhohn And Strodtbeck's Values Orientation Theory, Michael D. Hills
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
People's attitudes are based on the relatively few, stable values they hold. Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck's (1961) Values Orientation Theory proposes that all human societies must answer a limited number of universal problems, that the value-based solutions are limited in number and universally known, but that different cultures have different preferences among them. Suggested questions include humans' relations with time, nature and each other, as well as basic human motives and the nature of human nature. Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck suggested alternate answers to all five, developed culture-specific measures of each, and described the value orientation profiles of five SW USA cultural …
Life-Span Developmental Psychology: Midlife And Later Years In Western And Non-Western Societies, Frank Eyetsemitan
Life-Span Developmental Psychology: Midlife And Later Years In Western And Non-Western Societies, Frank Eyetsemitan
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This chapter discusses the basis on which studies have been done on the later years of life in Western and non-Western cultures. It suggests that because Westerners value independence, most research on aging in Western societies has focused on how to help the individual maintain his or her functional independence throughout the life-span. Non-Westerners, on the other hand, value interdependence. Therefore, most research on aging has focused on the availability of social support in later life. But with Westernization influences in non-Western societies, there should be a shift in research efforts in order to accommodate a new understanding of aging …
What Questions Arise When Studying Cultural Universals In Depression? Lessons From Abnormal Psychology Textbooks, Junko Tanaka-Matsumi, Robert Chang
What Questions Arise When Studying Cultural Universals In Depression? Lessons From Abnormal Psychology Textbooks, Junko Tanaka-Matsumi, Robert Chang
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
We examined 70 abnormal psychology textbooks published from 1920s to the present to identify consistent cross-cultural themes with regard to human depressive experiences over time and across regions of the world. The cultural and cross-cultural literature on abnormality and depression, in particular, has contributed to widening the scope of abnormal psychology textbooks over time. However, the texts are almost entirely dependent on Western diagnostic categories, particularly with regard to definitions of depression. Within the Western classification framework, authors of abnormal psychology textbooks have increasingly recognized the role of culture in depressive experiences and their communication. On the basis of our …

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In my view, the study of culture provides three main contributions to our understanding of human behavior and mental processes. First there is great knowledge to impart about cultural similarities and differences in behavior, and these form the basis for improving psychological theories. Second the study of culture is a prime example of critical thinking in the field, as cross-cultural research begs the question about whether our notions of truth and psychological principles are applicable to people beyond those whom were studied. Third research on intercultural adjustment provides us with clues about possible psychological constructs that may be universally necessary …
Levels Of Analysis In Cross-Cultural Psychology, Peter B. Smith
Levels Of Analysis In Cross-Cultural Psychology, Peter B. Smith
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Cross-cultural psychologists seek to understand the nature of culture, a concept that can only be understood at the collective, supra-individual level. In most areas of psychology, researchers treat each individual as a separate source of data. Cross-cultural psychologists therefore need a clear understanding of the relationship between individual-level and group or collective-level analysis. Selected studies are reviewed that illustrate the way in which research may yield results that differ at different levels of analysis. Indications are given as to how cross-cultural psychologists can best handle the complexities of culture-related measurements for individuals and groups.
Public Displays Of Affection With Relation To Comfort Levels And Culture, Janice R. T. Bryden
Public Displays Of Affection With Relation To Comfort Levels And Culture, Janice R. T. Bryden
Graduate Theses
To determine the tolerance levels of public displays of affection between males, females, Hispanics, and White Non-Hispanics (Whites), a total of 152 participants completed the Attitudes Toward Public Displays of Affection Inventory. While the hypothesis that males would be significantly more tolerant than females of observing public displays of affection was statistically supported for certain settings and certain levels of affection, overall, results may not be clinically meaningful. The second hypothesis, that there would be a significant difference between Hispanics and Whites and their tolerance levels for watching public displays of affection, was not supported. Overall trends indicate passionately kissing …

Subjects performed an economy run and a t-agility test to determine exercise performance. Results: The drugs had …
Differing Death Scenarios: Self Esteem And Death Anxiety., Kenneth Grant Brewer
Differing Death Scenarios: Self Esteem And Death Anxiety., Kenneth Grant Brewer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Previous research has found a correlation between death anxiety and self esteem. Researchers have found that both self-esteem and death anxiety play a significant role in an individual's behavior.
The purpose of this study was to investigate a correlation, if any, between death anxiety and self esteem using death related scenarios. It was hypothesized the high death anxiety groups will have lower self-esteem than the low death anxiety group, and that the low self-esteem group will have higher death anxiety than the high self-esteem group.
Results of an ANOVA indicate that there is a significant difference between the high death …
Schumpeter And The Obsolescence Of The Entrepreneur, Richard N. Langlois
Schumpeter And The Obsolescence Of The Entrepreneur, Richard N. Langlois
Economics Working Papers
The English-language literature of technological change is one of the few areas of economic writing in which Joseph Schumpeter has maintained a following and in which he has been accorded some modicum of the attention he deserves. There has grown up within this literature a standard interpretation of Schumpeter's famous assertion that progress will eventually come to be 'mechanized'. The conventional wisdom goes something like this. The argument in Schumpeter's early writings by which writers invariably mean the 1934 English translation of The Theory of Economic Development -- is really quite different from that in Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy. There …

Lying, Integrity, And Cooperation, Lanse P. Minkler, Thomas J. Miceli
Economics Working Papers
While talk is cheap to some, it is expensive to others for whom moral considerations come into play. We employ a simple two-stage modified prisoner's dilemma game where integrity is endowed on a continuum to analyze when agents will lie in random economic interactions. If there is sufficient integrity in the population, all agents make a promise in the first stage to cooperate in the second. Some agents always lie, some always tell the truth, and some behave conditionally. Enhanced cooperation is a byproduct of integrity.

Waiting To Exhale?: Global Warming And Tax Policy, Roberta Mann
Waiting To Exhale?: Global Warming And Tax Policy, Roberta Mann
American University Law Review
This article explores the links between energy policy, tax policy and global warming. This article focuses on tax policy, because the emerging consensus among legal scholars favors economic incentives rather than command-and-control regulations for reaching environmental goals, and the Federal income tax has proved an effective delivery system for economic incentives.
After briefly discussing of the science of global warming and the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, the article reviews the impact of both existing tax law and current proposals for energy legislation on global warming, as well as potential international law consequences of failure to act …
Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni
Architectural Sociology And Post-Modern Architectural Forms, Ronald Smith, Valerie Bugni
Sociology Faculty Research
Architectural sociology examines how architectural forms are both the cause and effect of sociocultural phenomena. As illustration of both but especially the former relationship, we could examine the role of architecture in the creation of contemporary Las Vegas, a city that has experienced almost unparalleled growth in residents (1.4 mil.) and tourists (35 mil.annually) since 1990. We consider the postmodern characteristics of Las Vegas and architecture’s role in creating this image.

Reproductive Experience And Aging : Possible Neuroprotective Effects Of Motherhood, Jessica Dawn Gatewood
Master's Theses
Hormonal fluctuations associated with pregnancy and post partum periods create significant changes in the brain and behavior in female rats. Animals were tested in a land version of the Morris Water maze for three days at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months. At the ages of 12, 18, and 24 months animals were also tested in the same maze using a reversal task. At the conclusion of the study brains were analyzed for Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) to determine the amount of neurodegeneration among the groups. Multiparous animals showed significantly superior performance , followed by primiparous animals, and nulliparous animals …

Hispanic Psychology: A 25-Year Retrospective Look, Amado M. Padilla
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Hispanic psychology has its roots in ethnic psychology and in cross-cultural psychology. The basic premise is that it is a valuable enterprise both theoretically and empirically to study the behavior of Hispanics. Over the past 25 years, research in Hispanic psychology has given way to a new scholarship or paradigm that calls for the recognition of intragroup variation which values within-group comparisons rather than relying exclusively on between-group effects. Acculturation and biculturalism have taken on special significance in Hispanic psychology. Further, Hispanic psychology must also consider the effects of racism and oppression on people and how these affect ethnic identity, …
Cultural Variations In Parental Support Of Children's Play, Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler
Cultural Variations In Parental Support Of Children's Play, Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The purpose of this reading is to highlight the importance of play for children's development and to examine the role of parents in supporting children's play in various cultures. Although play is believed to be universal, the amount of attention devoted to play in a particular society depends in part on the cultural beliefs about the nature of childhood, and on the adults' specific goals for their young children. Researchers have found that some parents consider themselves appropriate social partners for their young children, but in many communities it is older siblings and peers who are the children's primary play …
Encouraging Depth Rather Than Surface Processing About Cultural Differences Through Critical Incidents And Role Plays, Richard Brislin
Encouraging Depth Rather Than Surface Processing About Cultural Differences Through Critical Incidents And Role Plays, Richard Brislin
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Intercultural interactions will increase in the future given international business ventures, immigration patterns, recognition of minority group rights in various countries, and other social changes. People can prepare themselves by participating in formal educational and training programs that deal with understanding cultural differences and with communication across cultural boundaries. One approach to education and training is to analyze critical incidents that depict people in intercultural encounters that involve a misunderstanding or a difficulty. In addition to identifying exact reasons for the difficulties, people can also learn about research-based concepts that assist in understanding many other intercultural interactions they are likely …
Social Skills Training For Aggressive Children In School Counseling: Implications Of Current Understanding Of Subtypes Of Aggressive Children, Jina S. Yoon, Rochelle M. Broder
Social Skills Training For Aggressive Children In School Counseling: Implications Of Current Understanding Of Subtypes Of Aggressive Children, Jina S. Yoon, Rochelle M. Broder
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
Social skills intervention (SSI) is one of the most popular choices for many school counselors when working with children who exhibit a wide range of behavior problems. However, a review of research findings indicates that social skills training has limited treatment efficacy in improving the social competence of children with behavior problems. Heterogeneous characteristics of these children may offer one explanation for the limited success of social skills training. This article reviews empirical research findings on the two forms of aggression (reactive aggression and proactive aggression) and proposes more individually tailored SSI as a way to improve its efficacy. Implications …
Counseling And Naturopathy: Exploring Collaboration Between Counseling And An Alternative Medical Model, Cheryl M. Milde, Diane Dempsey Marr
Counseling And Naturopathy: Exploring Collaboration Between Counseling And An Alternative Medical Model, Cheryl M. Milde, Diane Dempsey Marr
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
Given a higher incidence of many common chronic conditions, the management of “difficult to heal” clients has given counseling a greater role within medical circles. Since many of these chronic conditions may be a result of environmental exposure to pathogens, the role of alternative or natural healing approaches has become increasingly popular. This paper provides a brief overview of the naturopathic medical model, and examines counselors’ collaboration with an alternative medical model with regard to professional counselor practice, training, and ethics.
