Saudi Medical Journal
The first successful separation of thoracopagus conjoined twins in Eastern Saudi Arabia with 2-year follow up is presented. Physical examination and radiographic studies revealed a conjunction that extended from midsternum to a common umbilicus. The shared internal organs included liver and pericardium. The separation was performed at the age of 4 months. The resulting chest wall defects in both twins were covered by dacron-reinforced silastic prosthesis. The abdominal wall defect was primarily closed in the "left twin," and covered with a dacron reinforced silastic sheet in the "right". Primary skin closure was achieved in both, following extensive mobilization of the …

Social And Emotional Outcomes Of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Review Of Recent Research, Kimberly A. Tyler
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
A total of 41 articles examined the social and emotional outcomes of childhood sexual abuse. The outcomes examined included suicide and substance use, gang involvement, pregnancy, running away, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), risky sexual behavior, and behavioral problems. Results for each of these outcomes tended to vary by developmental period. How¬ever, problems of internalizing and externalizing behavior appeared to be specific to sexually abused children of all age groups. Some studies found differences in outcome according to gender, race, and age. Although findings related to abuse characteristics were found to vary from study to study, severity of the abuse, use …

Coexistence Of Ferromagnetic And Glassy States In Mechanically Milled Gdal2, C. Stark, P. M. Shand, T. M. Pekarek, D. Williams, R. Brown, Lanping Yue, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky
Diandra Leslie-Pelecky Publications
Measurements of DC susceptibility, AC susceptibility, and AC susceptibility with an applied DC bias field were performed on mechanically milled GdAl2. A paramagnetic phase exists above a temperature T ≈ 140 K. However, there are significant deviations from the Curie-Weiss Law in this temperature regime, suggesting multiple magnetic components. Fits to the high temperature data show that two Curie-Weiss terms represent the data quite well. Below 140 K one of these magnetic components becomes ferromagnetic as indicated by a shoulder in the AC susceptibility and DC susceptibility data. This ferromagnetic component is suppressed by the application of sufficiently …

Master's Projects
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information It can also be described as a computerized cartography which is an improvement from the paper maps that used to be painstakingly created by hand. Since a GIS can handle physical, biological, cultural, demographic, or economic information, it is a valuable tool and has been used in the natural, social, medical, and engineering sciences, as well as in business and planning.
The field of urban planning has made huge progress in managing databases for necessary information, reflecting existing situations, and analyzing …

Examining The Similarities And Differences In Benefits Of School-To-Work As A Workforce Development Strategy: A Study Of Key Stakeholder Involvement Using A Multiple Case Study Approach, Alton Leon Alford
Dissertations
As we enter the new millennium, there is considerable evidence which indicates that in the 1990's many U.S. business were experiencing rapid growth and expansion resulting from a robust American economy. As a result, business activity in most employment sectors has shown many signs of future growth with projections of continued growth well into the 21st century. This growth in the new economy has resulted in a critical need for highly skilled entrants into the workforce whose working life times will extend toward the mid-twenty-first century (Judy & D'Amico, 1997). With an identified skills shortage looming over many U.S. corporations …
The Effects Of Respite Care On Care Providers Of People With Disabilities, Sara L. Masten
The Effects Of Respite Care On Care Providers Of People With Disabilities, Sara L. Masten
Student Work
Respite care has been an intervention used by families taking care of a member with a disability for many years to provide the caregivers with a break from the daily care-taking duties of taking care of a family member with a disability. Though research has been conducted on this topic in a variety of areas (ie: needs for and availability of respite services), measurable outcomes and personal benefits is one area that has not been the focus of much investigation. Thus the purpose of this investigation was to examine the impact of a respite care program on levels of perceived …

Fears And The Presence Of Imaginary Companions And Personified Objects In Preschool Children, Jill R. Ramet
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between a pre-school child’s fears and the child’s use of an imaginary companion or personified object. Preschool-aged children (36 To 74 months) were interviewed using a revised version o f the FSSC-R fear scale, and an imaginary companion questionnaire. Parents were asked to complete a demographic questionnaire. Data analyses revealed that children who did not have an imaginary companion or a personified object had an absolute higher total fear score than children who had this type o f figure, although this difference was not significant. Children with the lowest absolute …

Rational Actors, Self-Defense, And Duress: Making Sense, Not Syndromes, Out Of The Battered Woman, Alafair S. Burke
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Current advocacy on behalf of battered women accused of criminal offenses focuses on the now familiar battered woman syndrome theory. Although the battered woman syndrome theory has enjoyed broad support when asserted by defendants claiming self-defense, the earnestness of the theory's judicial acceptance is questionable. First, in light of both empirical and analytical flaws in the battered woman syndrome theory, the overwhelming judicial acceptance of the theory is inconsistent with courts' growing tendency to scrutinize scientific evidence. Second, courts have been reluctant to extend the battered woman syndrome theory to the defense of duress, where the theory would excuse battered …

Open For Business: Exploring The Life Stages Of Two Canadian Street Youth Shelters, Jeff Karabanow
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Youth shelters have emerged as significant resources for homeless and runaway adolescents. Through participant observations of shelter culture, review of agency archival materials, and in-depth interviews with 21 shelter workers (front line staff, middle managers, and upper-level executives), this analysis explores the life stages of two Canadian street youth shelters, highlighting the dramatic transformations in their internal operations and external environments. This paper also offers an understanding of organizational evolutionary processes.
Not In My Social World: A Cultural Analysis Of Media Representations, Contested Spaces, And Sympathy For The Homeless, James A. Forte
Not In My Social World: A Cultural Analysis Of Media Representations, Contested Spaces, And Sympathy For The Homeless, James A. Forte
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The social constructionist approach offers conceptual tools that may augment social workers' persuasive powers and problem solving capacities. In this case study, I examine a newspaper campaign to cast the homeless in negative terms and justify the closing of a shelter. Findings are presented as seven themes used by competing claims-makers. Each constructs a different depiction of the homeless, of homelessness, and of preferred solutions. Linkages between community memberships and favored problem definitions are identified. I conclude with suggestions for how "intelligent social reconstruction" might help social workers function as sympathy brokers for the vulnerable. (Key words: homelessness, NIMBY, mass …

Automatic Estimation Of The Seafloor Geomorphology Of The Santos Basin, Brazil, Brian R. Calder, Luciano E. Fonseca, Joao B. Francolin
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The bathymetry and acoustic backscatter of Santos Basin, Brazil were mapped using a SeaBeam 2112 (12 kHz, 151 beam) Multibeam Echosounder (MBES) aboard the R/V Falcon Explorer. This MBES data was acquired from January-November, 2000, during a high-resolution multi-channel 3D seismic survey, resulting in 380 parallel lines of 90 km length, spaced 250 m apart. The final survey mapped an area of 5,000 km${}^2$ in water depths of 900--2000 m. These closely spaced multibeam tracks resulted in an average overlap between swaths of 1000%, thereby ensonifying most areas of the seafloor at least ten times. Traditional (hand) processing of a …

Seafloor Characterization From Spatial Variation Of Multibeam Backscatter Vs."Best Estimated" Grazing Angle, Tianhang Hou, Larry A. Mayer, Christian De Moustier, Barbara J. Kraft
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Backscatter vs. grazing angle, which can be extracted from multibeam backscatter data, depends on characteristics of the multibeam system and the angular responses of backscatter that are characteristic of different seafloor properties, such as sediment hardness and roughness. Changes in backscatter vs. grazing angle that are contributed by the multibeam system normally remain fixed over both space and time. Therefore, they can readily be determined and removed from backscatter data. The component of backscatter vs. grazing angle due to the properties of sediments varies from location to location, as the sediment changes. The sediment component of variability can be inferred …
