Learning To Do The Job: The Transfer Experiences Of Three Child Welfare Workers., Patricia Ann Chase

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three child welfare workers were studied over the period of one month to investigate their transfer experiences with learning one aspect of their agency's information system. Internal reviews within the agency had determined that the information system was not being used effectively, so this investigation was conducted to construct a picture of how these workers learned to use the system and whether there were issues related to both training and transfer that contributed to the ineffective use of the system. Data on each case were collected before, during, and after training using interviews, pre/post tests, questionnaires, observation notes, and worker …

Adaptation Of The Team Problem Solving Assessment Tool For Teambuilding Applications, Timothy R. Borton, David L. Groves

Visions in Leisure and Business

Team building is popular with business, organizations and universities because of its ability to improve performance through group's processes. Even though teambuilding is commonly used by businesses, there are few tools that measure the effectiveness of teambuilding quantity. One author suggests that there is a large amount of anecdotal evidence that teambuilding is effective, but quantity measures of teambuilding related to the outcomes it produces exists. The purpose of this project was to adapt the Team Problem Solving Assessment Tool (TPSAT) by Armando J. Rotondi for teambuilding events. A Delphi approach was used with content experts to modify the instrument.

Vicarious Snitching: Crime, Cooperation, And "Good Corporate Citizenship", Michael A. Simons

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article will examine corporate cooperation and the difficulties it can create for corporate decision-makers. Part I describes the principles of vicarious guilt that give prosecutors the power to demand corporate cooperation. Part II examines how prosecutors exercise their discretion in deciding whether to charge corporations with crimes. In Part III, the Article examines the cooperators. Just as a corporation's guilt is only vicarious, so too its cooperation can be only vicarious. In the end, it is not the corporation that cooperates, but its officers and directors-the men and women who make decisions for the corporation. For these vicarious …

Persistence And Visibility Of Group Faultlines: A Theoretical Model Of The Effect Of Group Culture And Team Identity On The Group Faultlines-Organizational Conflict Link, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn, Madhan Gounder Jan 2002

Persistence And Visibility Of Group Faultlines: A Theoretical Model Of The Effect Of Group Culture And Team Identity On The Group Faultlines-Organizational Conflict Link, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn, Madhan Gounder

Psychology

We expand the group faultline theory by taking into account the relative importance of various demographics within the group that can trigger the formation of strong group faultlines. We draw on group faultline theory (Lau & Murnighan, 1998), social identity and categorization theories (Turner & Tajfel, 1986), social dominance theory (Sidanius & Pratto, 1999), and evolutionary psychology (Kurzban & Leary, 2001) to predict how group faultlines affect conflict. We propose that the visible demographic characteristics (age, race, and gender) will be more influential than the non-visible (education, tenure, and function) in determining the interaction patterns within the group (Thatcher & …

What A Mess! Participation As A Simple Managerial Rule To “Complexify” Organizations, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Dennis Duchon, Reuben R. Mcdaniel Jr., John W. Huonker

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

This paper adopts a view of organizations as complex adaptive systems and makes a case for making organizations more complex internally through the use of a fairly simple managerial rule—using participative decision making. Participation in decision making enhances connectivity in organizations, which in turn, gives the organization the opportunity to self-organize and co-evolve in more effective ways than when there is minimal connectivity (i.e., autocracy). The paper uses a specific body of research to support the arguments about why participation can benefit the practice of management in modern organizations.

Substantive attention to disproportionate gaps in achievement between minorities and non-minorities has led state educational agencies to institute responsive policy mandates. The implementation of equity and multicultural policies has resulted in the development of strategies and evaluative measures that assist in building capacity within educational environments to meet the needs of diverse groups of students. This comparative case study examines the ways in which two states have addressed issues of low educational attainment among ethnic and linguistic minority students by instituting equity policy mandates. The two state departments of education have reached out to stakeholders, developed action plans, and attempted …

Exploration Of The Nature Of The Work Done By United States Marshals Service Employees In The District Of Nevada, Michael Robin Schlaerth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

For the first time in its 212 year history, the United States Marshals Service created a position for employees specifically designated to assist district offices experiencing administrative and operational problems. This move was promoted by a recruiting session in April of 2001 which was designed entirely to train individuals for the job entitled GS-082. This move is the result of the agency's overall need for more labor. However, while these agents carry the title of "Deputy Marshal", they do not require the same intense training of the standard GS-1811 agents, as their duties do not demand it. Employees in the …

A Case Analysis Of Three Middle-School Boys Who Have Down Syndrome And Have Been In Regular Education Classes Since Preschool, Eileen Frances Luddy

Dissertations

This study investigated the experiences of three middle-school boys who have Down syndrome and have always attended regular education classes.

Despite the existence of policies and initiatives in support of inclusive education, research on the implementation of inclusive practices in middle schools is sparse.

This study is organized in nine chapters. A review of literature revealed that significant research conducted during the past decade supports the practice of including students with disabilities in regular education and the benefits of inclusion outweigh the benefits of separate instruction.

A case study approach investigated the phenomenon covering contextual conditions surrounding the experiences of …

The Design, Implementation, And Assessment Of Initial Change And Growth In A Local Voluntary Organization And Its Members, Tracy Ann Weber

Dissertations

Problem. During the past 30 years, Americans have steadily reduced their participation in the traditional forms of community involvement, such as clubs, associations, and organizations, that bring people together to effectively pursue a shared objective. In this postmodern society, leaders of community and nonprofit organizations find they are asking themselves difficult questions about the most effective methods of fulfilling their mission and simultaneously meeting members' changing needs. Participatory volunteer-run organizations, such as a local branch or chapter of a national organization, face many challenges, making it hard to establish and maintain there organizations. They demand great energy of leaders, …

Policing Guns And Youth Violence, Jeffrey A. Fagan Jan 2002

Policing Guns And Youth Violence, Jeffrey A. Fagan

Faculty Scholarship

To combat the epidemic of youth gun violence in the 1980s and 1990s, law enforcement agencies across the United States adopted a variety of innovative strategies. This article presents case studies of eight cities' efforts to police gun crime. Some cities emphasized police-citizen partnerships to address youth violence, whereas others focused on aggressive enforcement against youth suspected of even minor criminal activity. Still others attempted to change youth behavior through "soft" strategies built on alternatives to arrest. Finally, some cities used a combination of approaches. Key findings discussed in this article include:

  • Law enforcement agencies that emphasized police-citizen cooperation benefited …

An Examination Of The Accuracy Of Slogans Related To Assessment Centres, Filip Lievens Jan 2002

An Examination Of The Accuracy Of Slogans Related To Assessment Centres, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

To diffuse new management fads or to promote existing management practices slogans are often used. In this study eight slogans regarding assessment centres were retrieved from brochures of consultancy agencies and were compared to empirical research. These slogans were that assessment centres work, are expensive, fair, have a potent influence on candidates, protide insight into candidates' personality, and are not prone to trainability effects. Other slogans include that trained assessors speak the same language and that candidate reactions are positive. Resulting from this comparison a more fine-grained picture of the strengths and weaknesses of assessment centres emerges. In particular, it …
