This paper uses the case of the introduction of large-scale broiler production in East Texas combined with a sociology of agriculture and food conceptual framework …

Engaging Minority And Culturally Diverse Audiences, James J. Hoorman Dec 2002

Engaging Minority And Culturally Diverse Audiences, James J. Hoorman

Journal of Extension

Extension's mission is to educate and disseminate research to all people, but minority and culturally diverse audiences are often difficult to engage. The article offers seven ideas to help Extension professionals engage these audiences. Learn to understand their culture. Interact with innovators and key leaders in the community, and understand the hierarchy. Identify and solve local issues. Be patient and persistent, and develop early success stories. Adapt the program to their culture, keep the message simple, and repeat the message. Look for win-win situations and financial incentives to encourage participation. Evaluate, revise, and repeat the program.

A Diversity Initiative Is Organizational Development: Anything Else Is Just Window Dressing, Carole G. Parker Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

When an organization, any organization, but in particular, higher education, decides to engage in a diversity initiative, the leadership of the institution must be aware that they are engaging in a complex change or organization development. Organization Development is defined as change initiated by the top leadership of an organization, the change must be organization-wide, it is planned; it is designed to improve organizational health and effectiveness, and is implemented with the assistance of skills and interventions based in the behavioral sciences.

Seizing The Moment: Creating A Changed Society And University Through Outreach, Judith A. Ramaley

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

This conference is built on two very interesting premises; first, that university outreach can change society and second, that outreach can also change the university. What is the mechanism by which this mutual influence can occur? What does the university offer the community, and what does the community offer the university? The short answer is--the opportunity to learn in the company of others in a situation where learning has consequences.

Organizational Persistence And Change: A Case Study Of A Community College, Paula L. Welmers

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This longitudinal case study examined the origins, growth, and development of one community college in Michigan, North Central Michigan College (NCMC). The purpose of the study was to understand organizational persistence and change through learning how one organization formed and developed over time.

Five eras between 1958 and 1995 were described, and a conceptual frame considered three levels of organizational responsibility: national, state, and local environments; core technology activities; and leadership activities. Core technology activities were further analyzed using eight indicators of centrality and marginality: a) policy, b) number and type of employees, c) dedicated facilities; d) funding source, e) …

How The Health Care Revolution Fell Short, Clark C. Havighurst

Law and Contemporary Problems

Managed Care I proved itself a poor public servant was appropriately deposed in the counter-revolution it inspired. Managed Care II apparently believes that, by cultivating a more benevolent image than its predecessor, it will be able to hang onto power and ride out any "perfect storm" that may be brewing and that its members can survive as private functionaries in a market increasingly dominated and controlled by government.

The implementation of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) requires major organizational change for employment and training agencies. The initiative emphasizes coordination, collaboration and communication among organizations for better service delivery. At this time, states are developing systems that will enable them to address the needs of all customers seeking employment. The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) has conducted state case studies for two purposes: (1) to identify how states have begun the process of collaboration under the new mandates of WIA; and (2) to understand the impact on customers with disabilities. This is the third in a series of publications …
