Microbial Ecology Of Freshly Sawn Yellow-Poplar Lumber ( Liriodendron Tulipifera L.) In Two Seasons, Mark Ryan Mikluscak
Microbial Ecology Of Freshly Sawn Yellow-Poplar Lumber ( Liriodendron Tulipifera L.) In Two Seasons, Mark Ryan Mikluscak
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Each year, the forest products industry sustains considerable product loss due to a reduction in market value of lumber brought about by microbial discoloration. The current practice of treating green lumber with chemical biocides to protect it from discoloration, although successful, is a potential hazard to both the environment and human life. One potential alternative to chemical biocides is biological control. The most recent success in the field of biological control has been achieved in the agricultural industry by first studying the microbial ecology of the substrate in which the biologically based preservative is to be used. Literature on microbial …
Prenatal Maternal Attachment: The Lived Experience, Regina Ann Leva-Giroux Dnsc
Prenatal Maternal Attachment: The Lived Experience, Regina Ann Leva-Giroux Dnsc
Dissertations
Prenatal maternal attachment and the practice of health promoting behaviors during pregnancy are considered universal phenomena to women. Yet, the understanding of these phenomena from the lived experiences of pregnant women has not been well researched. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experience of maternal attachment to the unborn child and how that attachment might relate to the practice of these behaviors during pregnancy. The participants in this study were ten English speaking women, college educated, professionally employed, who were pregnant for the first time. Unstructured interviews were conducted with the participants at 14–16 weeks and …
Characterization Of Fro1, A Pea Ferric-Chelate Reductase Involved In Root Iron Acquisition, Brian M. Waters, Dale G. Blevins, David J. Eide
Characterization Of Fro1, A Pea Ferric-Chelate Reductase Involved In Root Iron Acquisition, Brian M. Waters, Dale G. Blevins, David J. Eide
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
To acquire iron, many plant species reduce soil Fe(III) to Fe(II) by Fe(III)-chelate reductases embedded in the plasma membrane of root epidermal cells. The reduced product is then taken up by Fe(II) transporter proteins. These activities are induced under Fe deficiency. We describe here the FRO1 gene from pea (Pisum sativum), which encodes an Fe(III)-chelate reductase. Consistent with this proposed role, FRO1 shows similarity to other oxidoreductase proteins, and expression of FRO1 in yeast conferred increased Fe(III)-chelate reductase activity. Furthermore, FRO1 mRNA levels in plants correlated with Fe(III)-chelate reductase activity. Sites of FRO1 …

Health Sector Reform In South Asia: New Challenges And Constraints, Anwar Islam, M Zaffar Tahir
Health Sector Reform In South Asia: New Challenges And Constraints, Anwar Islam, M Zaffar Tahir
Community Health Sciences
In early 1990s, Jamison, Mosley and others concluded that a profound demographic and consequent epidemiological transition is taking place in developing countries. According to this classical model, by the year 2015, infectious diseases will account for only about 20% of deaths in developing countries as chronic diseases become more pronounced. These impending demographic and epidemiological transitions were to dominate the health sector reform agenda in developing countries. Following an analysis of fertility, mortality and other demographic and epidemiological data from South Asian and other developing countries, the paper argues that the classical model is in need of re-evaluation. A number …
Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus
Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This analysis examines the sensitivity of state intergovernmental aid, per capita, to measures of resources, infrastructure, social services, social problems and demographics in Northern and Southern local governments in 1982 and 1992. Time-periods chosen are based on the potential for domestic policies born through new federalism to harm local governments through lesser amounts of available state aid. North and South are compared to account for possible regional differences. Regardless of region and time however, redistribution efforts to local governments with higher levels of need and lower levels of resources are not particularly good. Redistribution tendencies present in 1982 declined by …

Comparison Of Broiler Breeder Production And Fertility In A Colony Cage System With Two Different Floors Versus A Slat-Floor System, Joseph Wayne Massey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two separate trials were conducted to compare egg production, egg weight, shell thickness, albumin height, fertility, and mortality of naturally mated broiler breeders maintained on either a slat and litter floor or in two tiered colony cages. In the first trial there was no difference (P > 0.05) in egg production between the two treatments. There was also no significant difference in hen mortality. Higher (P < 0.05) egg shell quality, albumin height, and shell thickness were observed in the cage maintained hens. Lower fertility (P < 0.05) was observed in the cage maintained hens. In the second trial production parameters were compared in naturally mated broiler breeders maintained on slat and litter floor, in colony cages on the original slats, and in colony cages on a modified slats. The modified slats were constructed from plastic and had a two piece design which produced a slight cushioning on the top of the slats. Egg production and mortality were not different (P > 0.05) among the three treatments. Eggshell thickness, albumin height, and shell thickness were lower (P > 0.05) in the litter and slat floor but not between the two cage treatments (P > 0.05). Fertility was higher (P …

Combined Effects Of Water Chemistry, Canopy Cover, And Stream Size On Benthic Macroinvertebrates Along A Central Appalachian Stream Continuum, Jesse Adam Bopp
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
I sampled benthic macroinvertebrates along a 25.2 km stream continuum in the Central Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia from May---October 2000. Six components of macroinvertebrate community structure and function were measured: density, biomass, richness, community taxa similarity, feeding group composition, and metric composition. I quantified these components to determine if localized variation in alkalinity and canopy cover would modify stream continuum predictions. Localized variation in alkalinity and canopy cover significantly affected macroinvertebrate structure and function and modified stream continuum predictions. Results indicated that alkalinity was the primary determinant of macroinvertebrate structure and function, and that the effects of canopy cover …

Protective Care: Mothering A Child Dependent On Parenteral Nutrition, Lorie H. Judson Phd, Mn, Rn
Dissertations
Home care of technology-dependent infants and children has become an accepted and expected consequence of higher survival rates among critically ill newborns and children who develop chronic illnesses. One of the high-tech modalities which foster dependence of these infants and children is parenteral nutrition. Parenteral nutrition, also called total parenteral nutrition (TPN), supplies life-sustaining nutrients through a central venous catheter and requires the use of machinery to pump this fluid directly into the bloodstream. Due to the tremendous cost of prolonged hospitalization for these children, and the deleterious effects to the child, home care is considered an obvious and viable …

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive dementia associated with increasing loss of memory, intellectual function, and disturbances in speech. It is the most common form of dementia. It is an incurable disease and has four stages which culminate in coma and death. The average survival rate for Alzheimer's is seven years. Presently, the only treatments approved in the United States for Alzheimer's are the drugs tacrine and donepezil. These drugs improve cognitive function in early Alzheimer's. However, Ginkgo biloba has recently been looked at as another treatment option and has been approved for use in Germany. Ginkgo Biloba was originally used …
Eating Trends In Childhood, Emily Willmore
Eating Trends In Childhood, Emily Willmore
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Children ages 6 through 11 years are progressing in many aspects of their life. Of interest, children are establishing eating patterns that will be carried throughout their lives. Some of these patterns can be considered problematic and need to be addressed, these include: overfeeding or obesity, adequacy of major minerals and establishing healthy eating patterns. We conclude that while some children's eating patterns are problematic, there are means to resolve these trends. They include counseling, family involvement, physical exercise and nutrition education in school at a young age.

Aromatic Amino Acid Catabolism By Lactobacillus Spp.: Biochemistry And Contribution To Cheese Flavor Development, Sanjay Gummalla
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Amino acids derived from the degradation of casein in cheese serve as precursors for the generation of desirable and undesirable flavor compounds. Microbial degradation of aromatic amino acids is associated with the formation of aroma compounds that impart putrid-fecal, barny-utensil, and floral off-flavors in cheese, but pathways for their production had not been established. This study investigated Tyr and Phe catabolism by Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus helveticus cheese flavor adjuncts under simulated Cheddar cheese-ripening conditions (pH 5.2, 4% NaCl, 15°C, no sugar). Enzyme assays of cell-free extracts and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography of supernatants indicated that L. casei and L. …
