The Effects Of Oral Antibiotic Therapy On Productivity And Immune Function Following Challenge With E. Coli And Rotavirus, C.C.L. Chase, D.J. Hurley, R.C. Thaler May 2002

The Effects Of Oral Antibiotic Therapy On Productivity And Immune Function Following Challenge With E. Coli And Rotavirus, C.C.L. Chase, D.J. Hurley, R.C. Thaler

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

Early weaning programs have been aimed at the control and elimination of respiratory infections in the young pig. Segregation from their dams at less than 21 days, batch rearing with all-in and all-out by room, building, or site, and proper biosecurity (cleaning, disinfecting, and quarantine) are mandatory to implement early weaning programs1. Early weaning with all its components gives a tremendous economic advantage to those who use this technology. This technology however does not come without a cost. This requires necessary building sites, scheduling and a high level of management. Enteric infections such as neonatal coccidiosis and post weaning diarrhea …

The Role Of Injury And Rain In The Infection Of Leaves By Erwinia Amylovora, Scott C. Ockey May 2002

The Role Of Injury And Rain In The Infection Of Leaves By Erwinia Amylovora, Scott C. Ockey

Biology

Erwinia amylovora dissemination was studied by sampling apple and pear leaves before and after a precipitation event. All pear and apple experiments revealed similar trends for the temporal and spatial nature of E. amylovora. Rain dispersed the bacteria to leaves only a short distance from the infection and survived less than 24 hours on the leaf. An experiment was designed to determine leaf age susceptibility to inoculation by E. amylovora when leaves were subjected to injury types that simulated hail, wind-blown rain, and rain dispersal. Succulent leaves in the hail and rain dispersal treatments were more susceptible to infection …

Evaluation Of The Persistence Of Grazing Alfalfa Varieties, Maria Stiles May 2002

Evaluation Of The Persistence Of Grazing Alfalfa Varieties, Maria Stiles

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The use of alfalfa (Medicago scitiva L.) for grazing is becoming more common. Alfalfa is the most widely planted legume, and is one of the most nutritional forage crops available. It is proposed that alfalfa was cultivated 4000 to 5000 years ago and produces the most protein per acre of any forage crop. Live weight gains for beef cattle grazing alfalfa average 230 to 360 kg ha-1. There is no cheaper way to harvest and utilize alfalfa than for the animal to harvest it directly. Most of the commercially available alfalfa varieties, however, were developed for hay production and thus …

Attitudes And Knowledge Of Nurses Regarding Herbal Medications, Janie Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Much information has been published regarding herbal medication use. However, information is limited on how nurses incorporate this information into their practice, communicate information to the client, or collaborate with physicians to prevent drug/herbal interactions. The purpose of this study is to explore the attitudes and knowledge of nurses regarding the use of herbal remedies at various levels of practice. According to Henderson's Theory of Basic Care Components, the nurse has a responsibility to assess client needs, help clients meet health needs, and provide a safe environment for the client to perform activities unaided. These interventions help the client become …

Threshold Evolution In Exotic Populations Of A Polyphenic Beetle, Armin P. Moczek, John Hunt, Douglas J. Emlen, Leigh W. Simmons May 2002

Threshold Evolution In Exotic Populations Of A Polyphenic Beetle, Armin P. Moczek, John Hunt, Douglas J. Emlen, Leigh W. Simmons

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Polyphenic development is thought to play an important role in the evolution of phenotypic diversity and morphological novelties, yet the evolution of polyphenisms has rarely been documented in natural populations. Here we compare the morphologies of male dung beetles (Onthophagus taurus; Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) from populations introduced to Australia and the eastern United States. Males in this species express two alternative morphologies in response to larval feeding conditions. Males encountering favourable conditions grow larger than a threshold body size and develop a pair of horns on their heads, whereas males that encounter poor conditions do not reach this threshold size and …

Seeds Of Distrust: Federal Regulation Of Genetically Modified Foods, Thomas O. Mcgarity

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article describes and evaluates the existing federal regulatory regime for protecting public health from risks posed by foods derived from GM plants. Part I briefly describes the technology involved in genetically modifying plants and relates the ongoing debates over the risks and benefits of GM food plants. Part II examines in detail the regulatory regime that has evolved in the United States to regulate the safety of GM foods, focusing in particular upon the pervasive role that the substantial equivalence doctrine has played in that regime. Finally, Part III suggests a more precautionary approach toward regulating GM foods that …

Determinants Of Living Arrangements Of Lesotho’S Elderly Female Population, Chuks J. Mba May 2002

Determinants Of Living Arrangements Of Lesotho’S Elderly Female Population, Chuks J. Mba

Journal of International Women's Studies

The paper addresses the demographic and socioeconomic correlates of living arrangements of women aged 60 years and over in Lesotho using the 1996 Census of Lesotho data file. Simple cross-tabular and multivariate techniques are applied to the household distribution of the census. The results show that a majority of elderly women in the country are widows, live in the rural areas, have had little education, and dwell in extended family households of which a significant proportion of them are the head. The findings further indicate that the age of the women’s surviving children, and advancing age of the elderly themselves …

Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner May 2002

Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Retardation Regarding Inclusion In Death And Dying Rituals, Paulette Marie Wagner

Theses and Dissertations

The principle of normalization requires that persons with mental retardation (MR) be encouraged to participate in the death and dying rituals which help people process the death of a loved one. It is widely argued that persons with MR would benefit from such inclusion, but little research exists to confirm this, or even to determine the degree to which persons with MR are encouraged to or discouraged from participating in death and dying rituals.

The purpose of this study was to identify how adults with MR are being included in death and dying events and rituals. It also adds to …

Each replication of the rotational system was stocked with 8 cow/calf pairs while the continuous system was stocked with 7 cow/calf pairs. The grazing season was divided into 3 periods to aid in analysis. Period 1 was further divided into grazing cycles consisting of 4 weeks each. Pasture growth during cycle I was found to be higher …

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen May 2002

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Modern interdisciplinary research in statistical science encompasses a wide field: agriculture, biology, biomedical sciences along with bioinformatics, clinical sciences, education, environmental and public health disciplines, genomic science, industry, molecular genetics, socio-behavior, socio-economics, toxicology, and a variety of other disciplines. Statistical science has historically had mathematical perspectives dominating theoretical and methodological developments. Yet, the advent of modern information technology has opened the doors for highly computation intensive statistical tools (i.e., software), wherein mathematical aspects are often de-emphasized. Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDDM) is now becoming a dominating force, with bioinformatics as a notable example. In view of this apparent discordance …

Effects Of Myxobolus Cerebralis On The Population Dynamics Of Kokanee In Porcupine Reservoir, Utah, Arthur E. Butts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study tracked the chronology and severity of Myxobolus cerebralis infection and related it to survival of age-0 kokanee to determine whether M. cerebralis represented a significant agent of morality in the population. Environmental conditions and losses to predation were identified and linked to age-0 kokanee survival to identify other sources of mortality in the population. We attempted to track survival of age-0 kokanee from the outmigration into the reservoir until the end of the first growing season in September of each year. The number of age-0 kokanee that entered the reservoir was calculated by obtaining estimates of total egg …

A Comparison Of Physical And Performance Characteristics Of Ncaa Division I Football Players: 1987 And 2000, Craig A. Secora May 2002

A Comparison Of Physical And Performance Characteristics Of Ncaa Division I Football Players: 1987 And 2000, Craig A. Secora

Student Work

Few studies have established normative data on performance variables of football and fewer exist that compare results from one decade to the next. In 1985, Olson and Hunter compared the data from 1974 and 1984 on 13 Division I team's. Berg, Latin and Baechle (1990) collected normative data on 40 Division I teams and made comparisons to rankings, offensive vs. defensive players, position comparisons, and major conferences. However, this research is outdated and no current research has assessed the changes in performance variables over time for Division I football players. The purpose of this study is to compare normative data …

Mist Variation And Epiphytic Orchid Abundance In A Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2002, Christopher Frohlich

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

There has been an observed increase in the frequency of days with no mist during the dry season in Monteverde (Pounds et al. 1999). This trend towards an increasingly dry environment could have detrimental effects on epiphytic orchids. The purpose of this project was to investigate the effect of mist level as well as mist frequency and branch direction on orchid abundance in 12 Daphnopsis americana (Lauraceae) host trees. Mist collectors were placed on 24 sample branches within the first horizontal angle of primary branches and mist was collected for eight days from all directions. Abundance counts of total orchids …
