Food Stamps: Available But Not Easily Accessible: A Study Conducted For Project Bread, Michelle Kahan, Elaine Werby, Jennifer Raymond Jul 2002

Food Stamps: Available But Not Easily Accessible: A Study Conducted For Project Bread, Michelle Kahan, Elaine Werby, Jennifer Raymond

Center for Social Policy Publications

Concerned with growing hunger among Massachusetts families eligible for Food Stamps, and the paradoxical decline in the number of program enrollees, Project Bread asked the Center for Social Policy at the John W. McCormack Institute of Public Affairs, University of Massachusetts Boston (CSP) to study the process of securing and sustaining Food Stamp Benefits. Concurrent with the planning process for the study, the Massachusetts legislature, in an override of the Governor's veto in early December 2001, included language in the FY 2002 budget designed to expand access to the program. Among other requirements, the language requires the Department of Transitional …

Searching For A Sense Of Control: The Challenge Presented By Community Conflicts Over Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, Nancy A. Welsh, Barbara Gray Jul 2002

Searching For A Sense Of Control: The Challenge Presented By Community Conflicts Over Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, Nancy A. Welsh, Barbara Gray

Faculty Scholarship

The growth in the number of concentrated animal feeding operations ("CAFOs"), particularly those involved in swine production, has brought with it increased community concern and outright conflict in many communities across the United States.' Most commentators have focused upon anticipated outcomes to explain the contentiousness of CAFO-related disputes.2 Meanwhile, even though the social dynamics that contribute to the development and escalation of conflicts over CAFOs parallel those exhibited in other kinds of community conflicts, little research has systematically examined the social dynamics associated with CAFO conflicts. One exception to this deficiency is recent work conducted by a team of researchers …

Clipping Management And Nitrogen Fertilization Of Turfgrass: Growth, Nitrogen Utilization, And Quality, Kelly Kopp, Karl Guillard Jul 2002

Clipping Management And Nitrogen Fertilization Of Turfgrass: Growth, Nitrogen Utilization, And Quality, Kelly Kopp, Karl Guillard

Plant Science Articles

The effect of returning grass clippings on turfgrass growth and quality has not been thoroughly examined. The objective of this research was to determine the effects of returning grass clippings in combination with varying N rates on growth, N utilization, and quality of turfgrass managed as a residential lawn. Two field experiments using a cool-season turfgrass mixture were arranged as a 2 x 4 factorial in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Treatments included two clipping management practices (returned or removed) and four N rates (equivalent to 0, 98, 196, and 392 kg N ha(-1)). Soils at the …

In-Home Prenatal Nutrition Intervention Increased Dietary Iron Intakes And Reduced Low Birthweight In Low-Income African-American Women, Chiquita Briley, Nicole L. Flanagan, Nancy M. Lewis Jul 2002

In-Home Prenatal Nutrition Intervention Increased Dietary Iron Intakes And Reduced Low Birthweight In Low-Income African-American Women, Chiquita Briley, Nicole L. Flanagan, Nancy M. Lewis

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Low birthweight (LBW), defined as an infant weighing less than 2,500 grams (1), is a major determinant of infant mortality and contributes to infant and childhood morbidity and increased healthcare costs (2-4). LBW occurs due to preterm delivery (length of gestation less than 37 weeks), growth retardation, or both (2). In the United States, higher rates of LBW occur in urban areas with high concentrations of low-income ethnic minorities (5). Results of the 1997 Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance indicate that the rate of LBW in the United States was 13% for African-American infants, and 8% for whites (6). Healthy People 2010 …

Income Tax Planning For Long-Term Care, David M. English Jul 2002

Income Tax Planning For Long-Term Care, David M. English

Faculty Publications

Planning for long-term involves more than the preparation of powers of attorney and counseling on possible asset transfers to qualify for Medicaid reimbursement. Steps should also be taken to make certain that the person receiving care continues to file an income tax return and does so at a minimum possible income tax cost. Practitioners should be familiar with the procedure for filing a return on behalf of an incapacitated individual. The medical expense deduction, while of little importance for most taxpayers, is critical for many elderly, particularly for those receiving long-term care. Long-term care insurance and life insurance may be …

Utility Of Participatory Rural Appraisal For Health Needs Assessment And Planning., M. A. Mahmood, Kausar S. Khan, Muhammad Masood Kadir, S. Ali, R. Tunio, N. Barney Jul 2002

Utility Of Participatory Rural Appraisal For Health Needs Assessment And Planning., M. A. Mahmood, Kausar S. Khan, Muhammad Masood Kadir, S. Ali, R. Tunio, N. Barney

Community Health Sciences

BACKGROUND:

While poverty and lack of life opportunities are root causes of a high burden of disease and infant and maternal mortality, inadequate health care contributes heavily. Often those who are left without care are those who need it most. Existing health services are managed without taking into account acceptance and need perspectives. This further reduces the effectiveness of and equity in health care. In order to guide the planning of reproductive health services by a national NGO, health needs were assessed in a district in Sindh using a combination of participatory rural appraisal (PRA) and qualitative and quantitative research …

Effects Of Sleep Duration, Sleep Quality, And Time Of Day On Executive Function Performance In Children, Judy T. Klaus

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

Executive functions are the cognitive abilities that include self-regulation, inhibition of responding, planning, and mental flexibility. Previous studies on executive functions I I have focused on people with ADHD and other impairments. Studies on sleep and cognitive function abilities have focused on the effects of lack of sleep and the ability to perform executive function tasks. This study examined the cognitive abilities of children with no impairment in relationship to Time of Day, Sleep Duration and Sleep Quality.

Thirty children ranging from age 7 to age 12 were recruited from the area. A self-report questionnaire on typical Sleep Duration and …

Breastfeeding And The Supportive Workplace: Integration Of Women's Productive And Reproductive Lives, Rebekah A. Cardenas Jul 2002

Breastfeeding And The Supportive Workplace: Integration Of Women's Productive And Reproductive Lives, Rebekah A. Cardenas

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Although authorities advocate breastfeeding for at least six months as the ideal form of infant nutrition, employed mothers may experience barriers to breastfeeding. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this study examined the relationship between maternal employment, workplace support, and breastfeeding duration. In general, it was predicted that paid employment following childbirth would have a negative impact on breastfeeding duration. In addition, existence of workplace support such as flexibility, childcare, and/or healthcare benefits was predicted to positively impact breastfeeding durations as well as job satisfaction upon returning to work. Hierarchical linear regression analysis offered support for some …

The Effects Of A 10-Week Exercise Program On Physiological Variables And Quality Of Life In Type 2 Diabetes, David Robb Holton

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the interaction between psychological and physiological parameters before and after a 10-week, aerobic training study of sedentary diabetic individuals and sedentary controls. Tests measuring physiological parameters (interstitial NO, blood flow, lactate threshold, VO2 peak and glycosylated hemoglobin) and a quality of life survey were completed before and after training. Nine previously sedentary diabetic (DE, diabetic exerciser) and 10 control sedentary subjects (CE, control exerciser) engaged in 10 weeks of supervised aerobic exercise. A non-training diabetic group (DS, diabetic sedentary, n=12) and a non-training control group (CS, control sedentary, n=I0) were also …

Long Term Residual Effects Of A Nutrient Addition On A Barrier Island Dune Ecosystem, Susan M. Heyel Jul 2002

Long Term Residual Effects Of A Nutrient Addition On A Barrier Island Dune Ecosystem, Susan M. Heyel

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

In 1991, 150 m2 were fertilized with nitrogen on three dunes on Hog Island, part of the Virginia Coast Reserve Long Term Ecological Research site, to examine plant community response to nitrogen addition. In 2000, the fertilized plots continued to exhibit a positive growth response. This study sampled the aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, and nutrient content of the experimental plots to examine the long- term patterns of nitrogen retention in a nitrogen limited system. Aboveground and belowground biomass was significantly greater in the fertilized plots than in the control plots. Aboveground biomass exhibited was significantly greater in control and …

Food Security Of Low-Income Single Parents In East Alabama: Use Of Private And Public Programs In The Age Of Welfare Reform, Patricia A. Duffy, Ginger Grayson Hallmark, Joseph J. Molnar, Latoya Claxton, Conner Bailey, Steve Mikloucich Jun 2002

Food Security Of Low-Income Single Parents In East Alabama: Use Of Private And Public Programs In The Age Of Welfare Reform, Patricia A. Duffy, Ginger Grayson Hallmark, Joseph J. Molnar, Latoya Claxton, Conner Bailey, Steve Mikloucich

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Despite a strong economy, the use of private, nonprofit food assistance is increasing. To determine how single parenthood affects the use of both public and private food assistance, a sample of food bank clients and low-income, food-needy non-clients in East Alabama was interviewed. Overall, single-parent food-pantry clients indicated higher levels of food insecurity than other groups, but the non-clients who were not single parents also indicated high levels of need. Although 42 percent of food bank clients were single parents, results showed that married couples with children were more highly represented among the food bank clients than among food-needy individuals …

Southern Rural Family Economic Well-Being In The Context Of Public Assistance, Bonnie Braun, Frances C. Lawrence, Patricia H. Dyk, Maria Vandergriff-Avery Jun 2002

Southern Rural Family Economic Well-Being In The Context Of Public Assistance, Bonnie Braun, Frances C. Lawrence, Patricia H. Dyk, Maria Vandergriff-Avery

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

As Congress considers reauthorization of public assistance legislation in 2002, researchers are challenged to provide data about the economic well-being of rural, low-income families. This paper provides findings from three southern states (Kentucky, Louisiana, and Maryland) currently participating in a 15-state, longitudinal study monitoring the economic well-being of rural families in the context of welfare reform of cash and food assistance. Initial findings reveal that even families using assistance to supplement their earned income fall short of self-sufficiency. These families are at-risk of living in economic crisis, or critical hardship, with inadequate earned and unearned income to meet their basic …

Raising A Flag Of Caution In The Race For Community-Based Approaches To Rural Welfare Reform: Early Findings From Texas, Miguel Ferguson, Dennis Poole, Diana Dinitto, A. James Schwab Jun 2002

Raising A Flag Of Caution In The Race For Community-Based Approaches To Rural Welfare Reform: Early Findings From Texas, Miguel Ferguson, Dennis Poole, Diana Dinitto, A. James Schwab

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

President George W. Bush's executive order establishing the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives heightens expectations that local organizations will provide superior services to support the objectives of welfare reform and address poverty. However, this expectation raises concerns about the capacity of community-based organizations (CBOs) to effectively implement reform projects in nonmetropolitan areas with limited access to important support services. This paper addresses these questions using early findings from an evaluation of four locally-organized welfare reform projects in rural Texas. We find that the reform projects experienced shortcomings in management, funding, and community involvement that appear to limit …
