African-American Women And Welfare: A Qualitative Study Of African-American Women Receiving Public Assistance, Michelle Randolph Jul 2002

African-American Women And Welfare: A Qualitative Study Of African-American Women Receiving Public Assistance, Michelle Randolph

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Using information obtained from interviews of a sample of fifteen African-American women from two counties in a border state, the overall perceptions of women receiving public assistance and the labels and stigmas (i.e., welfare checks, food stamps, and medical cards) associated with receiving public assistance were examined. Research findings indicate that there is stress associated with receiving public assistance, and the stigmas associated with public assistance influence people in the public domain to brand recipients socially. The findings from the interviews produced results indicating that the perceived differences and mistreatment felt by welfare recipients were, in part, the result of …

Effectiveness Of Nutrition Counseling In Young Adult Males, D. R. Williams, Nancy M. Lewis

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this project was to determine if the addition of a laboratory measurement, i.e., measurement of serum cholesterol, would increase the effectiveness of nutrition counseling in young men. Subjects were a random sample of 45 healthy male students from a Midwestern university, between the ages of 20 and 25 who were consuming >30% of kcal from fat. Men were randomly assigned to one of four groups; nutrition counseling and measurement of serum cholesterol (NC + SC), nutrition counseling only (NC), measurement of serum cholesterol only (SC), or control (C). At weeks 1 and 6, participants completed a 24-hour …

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan Jul 2002

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. Librarians can also help scientists to …

Death Through Administrative Indifference: The Prison Litigation Reform Act Allows Women To Die In California's Substandard Prison Health Care System, Amy Pétre Hill Jul 2002

Death Through Administrative Indifference: The Prison Litigation Reform Act Allows Women To Die In California's Substandard Prison Health Care System, Amy Pétre Hill

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

California's prison system, the nation's largest, developed a health care policy that is deliberately indifferent to the medical needs of women while still spending significantly more per prisoner for health care than other large states. However, the Prison Litigation Reform Act of 1996 interacts with California's prison administrative law to prevent women inmates from seeking emergency injunctive relief from the federal courts. Legal and legislative tools can be used at the federal and state level for short- and long-term reform of the California Department of Correction's health care system to stop the needless deaths of California's female inmates. Ultimately, courts …

Animal Diet Modification To Decrease The Potential For Nitrogen And Phosphorus Pollution, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rosalina Angel, Gary Cromwell, Galen E. Erickson, Danny G. Fox, Carl Parsons, Larry D. Satter, Alan L. Sutton, David H. Baker, Austin Lewis, Deanne Meyer

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

In 1996, the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) published a report entitled Integrated Animal Waste Management. One of the recommendations in that report was to “change animal diets to decrease nutrient outputs” (CAST 1996, 1). Since that time, concentration of animal production units has continued, public concern about the environmental effects of animal manure has increased, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed more restrictive requirements for concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO regulations).

Progress has been made since 1996 to decrease nutrient outputs by animals through diet modification and nutrition. The current study describes the existing …

Parameterizing Gpfarm: An Agricultural Decision Support System For Integrating Science, Economics, Resource Use, And Environmental Impacts, G. S. Mcmaster Jul 2002

Parameterizing Gpfarm: An Agricultural Decision Support System For Integrating Science, Economics, Resource Use, And Environmental Impacts, G. S. Mcmaster

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Few farmers and ranchers adopt agricultural software such as decision support systems (DSS). While numerous decision aids are available, most are too difficult for producers to use, exclude components (e.g., economic budgeting, weeds, multicriteria decision analysis) necessary for meaningful use on farms and ranches, and usually suffer from poor understanding by scientists of producer needs and how they process information. The USDA-ARS Great Plains Framework for Agricultural Resource Management (GPFARM) decision support system has been developed that integrates a graphical user interface, data from farms and ranches, soil-plant-weed-water-N-erosion simulation modules, an economic analysis package, and a multicriteria decision making (MCDM) …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Decision support in sustainable forest management (SFM) has some specific features: a) it can perform quantitative prediction of forest ecosystem dynamics under different scenarios of SFM; b) it can spatially combine the predictions of different scenarios on the territory of a forest unit to support decisionmaking. We represent the integration of simulation modelling with the exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA). The EFIMOD 2 is a spatially explicit individual-based ecosystem model, which was run for simulation of forest ecosystem dynamics at stand level on the territory of a state forest in Central European Russia. The DESCARTES software system designed to support …

A Negotiation Support Tool For Assessment Of Land Use Change Impacts On Erosion In A Previously Forested Watershed In Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia, B. J. P. Verbist, Meine Van Noordwijk, A. C. Tameling, K. C. L. Schmitz, S. B. L. Ranieri

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Land use is changing rapidly in SE-Asia from forest to landscape mosaics with various degrees of tree cover. The relations between impacts at these different scales should recognize a range of 'lateral flow' and 'filter' phenomena. To develop concepts and an appropriate methodology, ICRAF and partner institutions study land use and its change in Sumberjaya, West-Lampung, Sumatra an area of about 730 km2, which encompasses a watershed, that was transformed in the past three decades from a large forest cover to a mosaic of coffee farms with rice paddies in the valleys and which has seen quite some conflict over …

Hoofs - A Multi-Scale, Agent-Based Simulation Framework For Studying The Impact Of Grazing Animals On The Environment, J. A. Beecham, S. P. Oom, C. P. D. Birch

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

An agent based system (HOOFS) has been developed in order to examine the interactions between foraging animals and a spatially explicit description of the environment, including vegetation growth processes. HOOFS makes use of the agent-based approach to develop a model of foraging in which animal decision making processes are explicitly modelled. The model has evolved from one where foraging decisions are based on a simple biased random walk model with an information weighting parameter, through one in which animals decide between direct walking towards an object as against continuous foraging, ending with a model where memory is used. The model …

Sensitivity Of Different Evapotranspiration Calculation Methods In Different Crop-Weather Models, J. Eitzinger, D. Marinkovic, J. Hosch Jul 2002

Sensitivity Of Different Evapotranspiration Calculation Methods In Different Crop-Weather Models, J. Eitzinger, D. Marinkovic, J. Hosch

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The calculation of evapotranspiration and its components transpiration and evapotranspiration is of crucial importance in dynamic crop-weather models, irrigation models and SVAT models. Although many approaches were developed and adapted for various applications and based on available input data, there is still a remarkable range of uncertainty related for a representative calculation. However, many of the problems are based on weak quality of model input data, but others are related to the method itself and its sensitivity to various environmental conditions. In our study, several methods of evapotranspiration estimation in different crop weather models are compared and tested against data …

Using Models To Predict Methane Reduction In Pasture- Fed Dairy Cows, C. C. Palliser, S. L. Woodward Jul 2002

Using Models To Predict Methane Reduction In Pasture- Fed Dairy Cows, C. C. Palliser, S. L. Woodward

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Because New Zealand is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol Framework Convention on ClimateChange (1997), it is required to report national greenhouse gas emissions and maintain them at 1990 levelsby 2008-2012. New Zealand has one of the highest per capita levels of the greenhouse gas methane[Woodward et al., 2001] and most of this arises from gut fermentation from ruminants. Not only does thisruminant-produced methane contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, but it is also wasteful in terms ofenergy loss for the animal. This paper investigates the ability of four methane models within MOLLY[Baldwin, 1995] to model the methane production from a …

M3 Project - Actor Based Simulation In Virtualworlds, Helge Rose, Torsten Asselmayer-Maluga, Peter Frank, Andreas Hoheisel, Walter Bertram

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

M3 Simulation is a simulation approach that actively involves real human actors in a virtual reality environment based on multidisciplinary simulation models. This actor based concept aims at integrated simulation of complex processes belonging to heterogeneous levels of reality, paying specific attention to real human behavior. The entities of the real system under consideration are represented in a consistent object-oriented way by agents simulated by environmental models. This distributed network-capable implementation of the M3 system combines environmental modeling with the intuitive graphic representation, complex communication and interaction structures of virtual worlds in order to support the process of investigation of …

Economic Growth, Longevity, And The Epidemiological Transition, Olivier F. Morand Jul 2002

Economic Growth, Longevity, And The Epidemiological Transition, Olivier F. Morand

Economics Working Papers

This paper integrates investments in health to a standard growth model where physical and human capital investments are the combined engines of growth. It shows the existence of two distinct health regimes separated by an 'Epidemiological Transition'. The various patterns of the transition identified in the epidemiological literature can be mapped into the model. The model also leads to the important hypothesis that the epidemiological transition may induce an economy to switch to a modern growth regime.
