LSU Master's Theses

The rising rates of obesity and overweight are contributing to higher costs for the individual and the nation, both medically and financially. There is a greater need for education and other preventive measures, but in order to tailor such programs effectively to the individuals most in need, it is important to examine the current trends, knowledge, and practices of adults in the United States. Previous research has examined the prevalence rates and practices of specific populations and individuals in limited geographical locations but, due to obvious constraints, few nationally representative samples have been examined. This study analyzed the results of …

Metal-Induced Generation Of Reactive Oxygen Species And Related Cellular Injury., Stephen Sunday Leonard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Metals have been indicated in causing generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cellular injury. The overall objective of the present study was to investigate ROS generation from metals and the related effects on biological systems. The results obtained from the present studies have demonstrated that: (a) Cobalt is capable of generating ·OH via a Co(I)-mediated Fenton-like reaction. (b) The ·OH radical is generated by reaction of H2O2 with Cr(V), which is produced by enzymatic one-electron reduction of Cr(VI). H2O2 is produced by reduction of molecular oxygen via O2·− as an intermediate. The ·OH radicals generated by these reactions are …

Policy Effectiveness And Instrument Selection: An Examination Of United States Organ And Tissue Donation Policies., Jennifer Lyn Mesich-Brant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Continuing advances in medical technology have made organ and tissue transplantation safer and more effective. However, organ and tissue donation has not increased at a similar pace. In order to promote donation and transplantation, federal and state governments have assumed an active role in educating citizens about the need for organs and tissues. This research examines why this policy area developed the way that it did and how effective it has been. I examine the need for a new policy typology and argue that policy type influences instrument selection. More specifically, I examine the effectiveness of policy changes in certain …

Body Perceptions Of Western Australian Female Group Fitness Instructors And The Influence Of The Workplace, Lana Leslie Jan 2002

Body Perceptions Of Western Australian Female Group Fitness Instructors And The Influence Of The Workplace, Lana Leslie

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Group fitness instructors work in an environment that promotes the often unattainable pursuit of an ideal body shape. The fitness centre often displays pictures of slim body shapes on the walls and sells goods and services that relate to weight loss and the improvement of the appearance. The instructors are part of this environment that promotes ideal body shapes, and they arc often seen as role models of health, fitness and slimness. It is possible that instructors arc under pressure to attain or maintain an ideal body shape, to be consistent with what their work environment represents. The purpose of …

Putting The Cart Before The Horse: The Need To Re-Examine Damage Caps In California's Elder Abuse Act* Jan 2002

Putting The Cart Before The Horse: The Need To Re-Examine Damage Caps In California's Elder Abuse Act*

San Diego Law Review

This Comment addresses what has been and continues to be a very controversial area of the law-damage caps imposed on plaintiffs who bring medical malpractice claims against health care providers in California. Since 1975, the state has restricted these actions as a means of holding down liability insurance premiums and reducing litigation through a package of statutes called the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA). In 1991, the legislature extended these limitations to claims brought under the state's Elder Abuse Act while at the same time providing for enhanced remedies in such actions to encourage litigation. Today, upon showing clear …

Punishing Reproductive Choices In The Name Of Liberal Genetics, Alexander Morgan Capron Jan 2002

Punishing Reproductive Choices In The Name Of Liberal Genetics, Alexander Morgan Capron

San Diego Law Review

When the four American moral philosophers who individually have already made the most significant contributions to the ethical analysis of contemporary health care and medicine collaborate, it should come as no surprise that their joint effort is a lucid and powerful analysis of the principles that a just and humane society would employ in setting policies about how the new tools of molecular genetics should be used for human betterment. In From Chance to Choice: Genetics and Justice, Allen Buchanan, Dan W. Brock, Norman Daniels, and Daniel Wikler aimed to steer a middle course between two extreme models. The first …

An Exploratory Study Of The Effects Of A Training Program On The Ability To Prepare A Breakfast Meal By Clients With Mild Alzheimer's Disease, Alicia J. Curtin

Open Access Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the insidious onset of an array of cognitive deficits that progress over time and lead to changes in an individual's ability to even perform simple tasks, such as preparing meals. Recently, researchers have demonstrated that clients with mild AD have preserved procedural memory function despite significant cognitive deficits. Procedural memory is an automatic, unconscious process, requiring practice and repetition to activate the particular structures involved in learning tasks. Skills training is a strategy using repetition and practice to enhance the client's ability to perform a certain task. An exploratory design using direct observation and …

The Big Three As Related To Receiver Apprehension And Listening Behaviors., Jamie Lynn Hayhurst

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The current study examined receiver and listening behaviors from a communibiological point of view. Communibiology proposes that particular communication variables are predictable by individual inborn processes. These inborn processes make up our individual temperament. Therefore, the apprehension variables were measured to determine if they were predicted by temperament. Individual temperament was measured using Eysenck’s Big Three measurement of extroversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. The dependent variables were then regressed to determine if they were predictable by all three temperament variables and/or by one of individual variables. College undergraduates (N = 325) voluntarily participated in the study. Results indicate mixed support for …

Micro-And Pulsed-Plasmas: Fine Tuning Plasma Energies For Chemical Analysis., Matthew Alan Moser Jan 2002

Micro-And Pulsed-Plasmas: Fine Tuning Plasma Energies For Chemical Analysis., Matthew Alan Moser

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the past decade, true chemical speciation has become increasingly important for environmental, clinical and nutritional chemists. Chemical speciation, by definition, is the identification of elements and their chemical environment in a given sample. The current and most popular trend for chemical speciation is to utilize hyphenated techniques, thus yielding two-dimensional information. Often, chromatography or an alternate separation technique is used to separate the mixture into its constituent components. Then, each component is interrogated by some spectroscopic technique. In nearly all cases, the nature of the compounds are inferred from their relative chromatographic properties, and the identification of elements and …

Courts Or Tribunals? Federal Courts And The Common Law, Peter L. Strauss Jan 2002

Courts Or Tribunals? Federal Courts And The Common Law, Peter L. Strauss

Faculty Scholarship

Every Justice, save perhaps Justice Breyer, has recently subscribed to an opinion raising questions in one or another context about whether federal courts can appropriately exercise common law law-making functions that had, until these questions began to appear, been characteristic of all American courts. To invoke a special class of "federal tribunal" whose actions are not to be confused with those of common law courts suggests broader implications than the long-familiar debates about Erie RR. Co. v. Tompkins, or more recent contentions over when, if ever, it is appropriate to infer privately enforceable judicial remedies in aid of federal statutes; …
