Srebp-1 Integrates The Actions Of Thyroid Hormone, Insulin, Camp, And Medium-Chain Fatty Acids On Accalpha Transcription In Hepatocytes, Yanqiao Zhang, Liya Yin, F Bradley Hillgartner

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In chick embryo hepatocytes, activation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase-α (ACCα) transcription by 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) is mediated by a cis-acting regulatory unit (−101 to −71 bp) that binds the nuclear T3 receptor (TR) and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1). SREBP-1 directly interacts with TR on the ACCα gene to enhance T3-induced transcription. Here, we show that treating hepatocytes with T3 or insulin stimulates a 4-fold increase in the concentration of the mature, active form of SREBP-1. When T3 and insulin are added together, a 7-fold increase in the mature SREBP-1 concentration is observed. Time course studies indicate that the T3-induced increase in …

Feminist Issues And Concerns In The Fictions Of Two Egyptian Women Writers: Alifa Rifaat And Nawal El-Saadawi, Shafiqa Anwar Fakir

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis involves an examination of feminist issues and concerns in the fictions of two contemporary Egyptian women writers: Alifa Rifaat and Nawal el-Saadawi. The main focus will be on illuminating the social, sexual, economical problems that the literary female characters encounter and how they deal with these various forms of oppressions. Examination of these author's lives and works illustrates the complexity of women within the boundaries of the same nation in matters of gender justice and equality. This further, implicitly, illustrates the complexity of Arab women who tend to be viewed as a cohesive whole.

The Social Welfare Of Advertising To Children, Dennis D. Crouch Jan 2002

The Social Welfare Of Advertising To Children, Dennis D. Crouch

Faculty Publications

The aim of this Comment is to approach the issue of advertising to children through an examination of economic incentives and efficiency. The Comment ultimately makes the claim that televised advertisement of products, such as junk food, directed toward children may be inefficient and tend to decrease social welfare. Although they may be compelling, this paper does not rely on the secondary negative externalities often associated with television, such as the cost of treating diabetes and heart disease. Rather, the inefficiency discussed in the Comment involves the informational qualities of advertising. Advertising directed towards young children can be thought of …

Evaluation Of Persistent Organic Pollutant Levels And Effects In Alaskan Natives, Marie Lenore Socha Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Persistent Organic Pollutant Levels And Effects In Alaskan Natives, Marie Lenore Socha

All ETDs from UAB

Alaskan Native women may be at an increased risk of exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) because they eat a subsistence diet that contains elevated levels of these chemicals. Research suggests that these chemicals may be capable of acting like estrogens, and thus could increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine overall body burdens of POPs in Alaskan Natives and compare these to results from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II); (2) determine if geographical location within Alaska correlates with a woman's body burden of POPS; …

Characteristics And Birth Outcomes: Women Receiving No Prenatal Care In The United States, 1995–1997, Cathy R. Taylor

All ETDs from UAB

Although prenatal care is an established mechanism for identifying and managing risk factors impacting pregnancy outcomes, about 70,000 women in the United States receive no prenatal care annually. It was hypothesized that women who receive no care comprise clusters (subgroups) with distinctive sociodemographic characteristics and that differences in birth outcomes exist among the clusters. A population-based, non-experimental, retrospective design, and secondary data were used to identify White, Black, and Hispanic ( n = 126,220) women delivering a live, singleton infant and reporting no prenatal care between 1995 and 1997. Cluster analysis was used to cluster (group) no care women with …

Community Dynamics And Diversity Of Ground Dwelling Arthropods Assemblages In A Maize Based Agroforestry System In Mtwapa, Coastal Kenya, Esther Kamunya

All Master’s Theses

The effect of diversification and intensification in agro ecosystems to arthropod diversity is not well understood, mainly because conservationists have greatly ignored agroecosystems, while most of the research work has been for a long time, directed towards the so called undisturbed systems like the natural forests. This study was intended to contribute towards evaluating relationships in agroecosystems and to assess the impacts of various cropping systems on the diversity and dynamics of soil dwelling arthropods. During the first phase of this study, Pitfall trapping was conducted every two weeks in all the plots from June 1999 to February 2000 and …

Comparison Of Muscle Fatty Acids Of Three Trout Species (Salvelinus Alpinus, Salmo Trutta Fario, Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Raised Under The Same Conditions, H. İbrahi̇m Hali̇loğlu, N. Mevlüt Aras, Hasan Yeti̇m

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

During recent decades, the study of fatty acids (FAs) belonging to the n-3 family in seafood has intensified due to their beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease. This study was undertaken to determine the FA composition of muscle lipids of three different farm raised trouts (Salvelinus alpinus, Salmo trutta fario and Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed the same diet and raised under the same conditions. Palmitic acid (16:0) in total saturated fatty acid (SFA) and oleic acid (18:1 n-9) in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) were the most abundant FAs and significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed between fish species. The differences in total SFA among the trouts were significant (P < 0.01), and O. mykiss had the highest (31.92%) SFA content while S. trutta fario showed the lowest in their edible muscle tissue. However, there was a significantly (P < 0.01) opposite observation for MUFA among the trouts, in which S. trutta fario had the highest content (41.90%) of MUFA in their muscle tissue while O. mykiss had the lowest (30.81%). The differences for the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content among the species were not significant (P > 0.05). O. mykiss had the highest n-3 PUFA (22.41%) while …

The Role Of Nf-Kb Activation In Hepatic Tumor Promotion By Polycholorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Zijing Lu Jan 2002

The Role Of Nf-Kb Activation In Hepatic Tumor Promotion By Polycholorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Zijing Lu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are nongenotoxic hepatic tumor promoters. PCBs have been shown to cause oxidative stress, but the exact mechanism by which PCBs exert their tumor promoting activity is not clear. In our study, PCB-153, a non-coplanar congener, caused a transient increase in hepatic NF-B DNA binding activity and cell proliferation, while PCB-77, a coplanar congener, showed no effect. Our second study using a mouse model that was deficient in the p50 subunit of NF-kB (p50-/-) showed that NF-kB contributes to the changes in hepatocyte proliferation and apoptosis in response to PCB-153 treatment: a single dose of PCB-153 increased hepatic …

The Global Digital Divide: Focusing On Children, Susanna Frederick Fischer Jan 2002

The Global Digital Divide: Focusing On Children, Susanna Frederick Fischer

Scholarly Articles

This article addresses the global aspect of the digital divide in two ways. First, I will focus primarily on the issue of school-aged children's access to information and communications technologies (ICT) globally. My focus is on children for the simple reason that children embody the future. Second, I will limit my assessment of this issue to a comparison of children's access to ICT in six countries around the world. Located on five continents, these six countries range from highly developed OECD countries to lesser developed countries. They are the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Mongolia, and Tanzania.

The Development And Study Of Chelating Substrates For The Separation Of Metal Ions In Complex Sample Matrices, James Cowan Jan 2002

The Development And Study Of Chelating Substrates For The Separation Of Metal Ions In Complex Sample Matrices, James Cowan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The fabrication and study of high performance chelating substrates for the separation of trace metals using a single column under both isocratic and gradient elutions were investigated. Neutral polystyrene based resins from a variety of manufacturers including a hypercrosslinked resin (MN 200) were functionalised via impregnation with chelating dyestuffs or dynamically modified with small, low molecular weight organic molecules by physical adsorption and chemisorption processes respectively. Improvements in the impregnation of substrates were developed, based upon ultrasonic agitation, along with improvements in the detection of metal ions by the use of a noise reduction system, eluent clean-up procedures and large …

The Influence Of Extracts Of Ascophvllum Nodosum On Plant And Soil-Borne Pathogen Interactions, Felisberta Maria Jesus Cunha Jan 2002

The Influence Of Extracts Of Ascophvllum Nodosum On Plant And Soil-Borne Pathogen Interactions, Felisberta Maria Jesus Cunha

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis presents an investigation into the responses to extracts of Ascophyllum nodosum (Maxicrop seaweed extracts - MSE) of two different plants species - wheat and strawberry, and their interactions with two soil-borne pathogens, Gaeumannomyces graminis and Phytophthora fragariae respectively, under various environmental conditions. The responses to MSE using hydroponic, glasshouse and field experiments showed that levels of Take-all infection in wheat were reduced by some of the treatments applied. Repeat experiments showed that consistency of results was poor but a positive trend for disease suppression followed MSE treatments. Studies of strawberry infection by Phytophthora fragariae revealed a significantly reduced …

Behavioral And Reproductive Aspects Of Captive Maxwell's Duiker (Cephalophus Mawellii) Husbandry, Janet Mcneill Mackinnon

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Female Maxwell's duikers (Cephalophus maxwellii) were studied at the Wildlife Survival Center on St. Catherine's Island, Georgia. The objectives were to quantify the effects of housing on activity budgets and progesterone cycling. Four animals were studied across two housing situations: housed individually versus housed in a grouped setting. Behavioral observations revealed no significant change in access to resources, rumination, or repetitive behaviors, once animals were housed together. Fecal samples were collected in order to determine levels of progesterone through radioimmunoassay (RIA). Fluctuations in progesterone levels revealed no clear estrous cycles. Animals showed less variability in progesterone levels and …

Agency Rules With The Force Of Law: The Original Convention, Thomas W. Merrill, Kathryn Tongue Watts Jan 2002

Agency Rules With The Force Of Law: The Original Convention, Thomas W. Merrill, Kathryn Tongue Watts

Articles

The Supreme Court recently held in United States v. Mead Corp. that agency interpretations should receive Chevron deference only when Congress has delegated power to the agency to make rules with the force of law and the agency has rendered its interpretation in the exercise of that power.

The first step of this inquiry is difficult to apply to interpretations adopted through rulemaking, because often rulemaking grants authorize the agency to make "such rules and regulations as are necessary to carry out the provisions of this chapter" or words to that effect, without specifying whether "rules and regulations" encompasses …
