Beet Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Host Plant Preferences For Oviposition, S. M. Greenberg, T. W. Sappington, T.-X. Liu

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), oviposition preferences were determined on five host plants: cabbage (Brassica oleracea capitata L.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in no-choice, two-choice, and five-choice tests. Tests were conducted in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field cages. Oviposition preferences were compared on the basis of two measurements, the proportion of eggs laid on the plants to total that were deposited, and the oviposition preference index defined as [(number of eggs laid on the plant) - (number of eggs laid on …

A Comparison Of Training Methods To Increase Neck Muscle Strength [Thesis], Ryan Stuart Price

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study WHS to determine if increases in isometric cervical muscle strength and range of movement (ROM) generated from ten weeks of training on the Multi-cervical unit (MCU) is significantly greater than the increase gained by training with the dynaband. The high rate of neck injury in the Air Force from pilots exposed to high +Gz force has instigated this research. 32 healthy subjects were split into three groups, with one group as the control, one group training on the MCU and one group training on the dynaband. Training groups completed ten weeks of resistance training in …

The Short Term Effects Of A Fire Fighting Foam And Fire Retardant On Selected Flora From Australia's Southwest, Andrew B. Kennedy Jan 2002

The Short Term Effects Of A Fire Fighting Foam And Fire Retardant On Selected Flora From Australia's Southwest, Andrew B. Kennedy

Theses : Honours

Chemical fire suppressants arc used extensively throughout Australia's Southwest to contain and suppress wildfires. Despite several studies being conducted into their effects on terrestrial vegetation in North America and Eastern Australia, where a variety of significant effects were found, no such investigation has been carried out in Australia's Southwest. This study examined the short-term effects of a fire fighting foam and fire retardant on selected flora from Australia's Southwest. Various concentrations of fire fighting foam and fire retardant were applied to seeds and seedlings of several native species. Native species were chosen for their high abundance and widespread distribution throughout …

Study Of Area Deprivation In Connecticut And Maine, Jonathan H. Ryder Jan 2002

Study Of Area Deprivation In Connecticut And Maine, Jonathan H. Ryder

Honors Theses

This paper accounts the development of an area deprivation index for two New England states, Connecticut and Maine. The index incorporates data from the 1990 U.S. Census. By applying methodology used in previous projects that created similar indices for area in Britain, an area deprivation index is created at the 5-digit zip code level for these two states in the year 1990. This project provides an example of how such a study can be applied to and completed in the United States. Foremost, it is an attempt to evaluate the relative merits of examining a comprehensive measure of area deprivation, …

A Potential Nutraceutical From Leuconostoc Mesenteroides B-742 (Atcc 13146); Production And Properties, Chang-Ho Chung Jan 2002

A Potential Nutraceutical From Leuconostoc Mesenteroides B-742 (Atcc 13146); Production And Properties, Chang-Ho Chung

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There is an emerging market for functional oligosaccharides for use in foods. Currently, technology for the production of oligosaccharides is limited to extraction from plant sources, acid or enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides or synthesis by transglycosylation reactions. Oligosaccharides also can be produced using a Leuconostoc fermentation and restricting the polymer size by the addition of maltose. Maltose limits the dextransucrase reaction, yielding high concentrations of a-glucooligosaccharides. Branched oligomers produced by this process were found to be readily catabolized by bifidobacteria and lactobacillus but were not readily utilized by either Salmonella sp., or E. coli, pointing toward their use in intestinal …

Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel Jan 2002

Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

International tourism has played an important role in unintended social changes in socialist countries. These social and cultural changes affect not only the economic, political and cultural genre of the government, but also of its citizens; This thesis asks the question, "Has the re-introduction of international tourism in Cuba diluted and compromised the egalitarian goals of the revolution"? I intend to show that the consequences of Cuba's emerging tourist industry has not only compromised the ideology of the revolution, but has in fact seen a return of a pre-revolution stratified society and parallel economies, one based on the peso and …

Two Non-Specific Indicators Of Stress: Enamel Hypoplasia And Harris Lines, Marta Pilar Alfonso Durruty Jan 2002

Two Non-Specific Indicators Of Stress: Enamel Hypoplasia And Harris Lines, Marta Pilar Alfonso Durruty

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Harris lines (HL) and enamel hypoplasia (EH) are two non-specific indicators of stress, commonly used in the reconstruction of the health status in past and present populations. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between these two markers. To achieve this aim, a sample of 136 individuals from two archaeological sites (Az-71 and Az-l40) from northern Chile was analyzed. HL and EH showed no correlation in terms of presence absence at the individual level. In addition, HL and EH, by age of the individual at the time of the defect formation, showed a completely …

Ecology And Growth Of Tamias Palmeri And Testing Of A Protocol To Monitor Habitat Relationships, Christopher Eric Lowrey Jan 2002

Ecology And Growth Of Tamias Palmeri And Testing Of A Protocol To Monitor Habitat Relationships, Christopher Eric Lowrey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The ecology of Tamias palmeri is investigated. Presence-absence and relative abundance of T. palmeri are related to principle component scores of habitat variables using logistic regression and multiple linear regression, respectively. Relative abundance of Tamias palmeri estimated with live capture-recapture was positively correlated with shrub cover and negatively correlated with slope. Timing of emergence from dens by juveniles was earlier and weights of juveniles were greater in ravine areas as compared to upslope areas. Track plates were not correlated with trap captures. Track plate success was not correlated with habitat variables. The results of this study were used to build …

From Neglected Waste To Protected Space: An Administrative History Of Mojave National Preserve, Eric Charles Nystrom Jan 2002

From Neglected Waste To Protected Space: An Administrative History Of Mojave National Preserve, Eric Charles Nystrom

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Mojave National Preserve, a unit of the National Park Service, was created in 1994 in southeastern California. Its 1.6 million acres were used historically for extractive industries such as mining and ranching, and its recent history was shaped by the land's proximity to urban Los Angeles. The preserve was the fruit of a long political battle between environmental activists and conservative opponents, and the park's final administrative form and subsequent management was indelibly altered by the compromises made during the legislative fight. The park's subsequent history, including innovative planning efforts, a 1995 attempt by opponents to eliminate the preserve's …

Impacts Of Dust Suppressant Application In The Quality Of Urban Runoff In Arid Regions, Daniela Figueiredo Loreto

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main objectives of this thesis were to generate preliminary data on the potential impacts of major categories of dust suppressants on the quality of urban runoff and to evaluate changes in the chemical composition of soils to which suppressants were applied. Eleven individual plots were topically treated with petroleum-based products, ligninsulfonate, acrylic polymers, magnesium chloride, fiber mulch, and non-petroleum-based products and one plot did not receive treatment (control). Rainfall was simulated and the runoff emanating from each plot was collected and analyzed for several parameters. In addition, the top two inches of soil from each plot were sampled after …

Evidence For Virgin Anasazi Presence In The Las Vegas Valley And Adjacent Areas, Susanne Janine Rowe Jan 2002

Evidence For Virgin Anasazi Presence In The Las Vegas Valley And Adjacent Areas, Susanne Janine Rowe

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Olivine-tempered ceramics are a characteristic artifact of Virgin Anasazi culture. The ceramics are found in the Las Vegas area, more than 70 km west of permanent Anasazi settlements in the Moapa Valley. Little is known regarding Anasazi utilization of this area, since most investigators have focused on the permanent settlements. I examined 25 ceramic assemblages from the Las Vegas vicinity, calculated the frequencies of olivine-tempered sherds in each, and noted the geographical distribution of the wares. The evidence does not support down-the-line exchange, but shows concentrations of olivine-tempered wares in the north Las Vegas Valley, Paradise Valley, and further west …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Alcohol Availability And Alcohol-Related Hospital Admissions In The City Of Chicago, 1990--1997, Dorothy Ruth Wilson Jan 2002

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Alcohol Availability And Alcohol-Related Hospital Admissions In The City Of Chicago, 1990--1997, Dorothy Ruth Wilson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Current research suggested a relationship between alcohol availability and problems, including suicide, and car accidents. However, the relationship between alcohol availability and alcohol related hospital admissions, such as acute intoxication and liver damage, has not been widely explored. Measuring alcohol availability by alcohol outlet density and using data for alcohol related hospital admissions in the city of Chicago, a Poisson regression analysis determined that neighborhoods with a higher percentage of African-Americans, higher poverty level, and a greater density of alcohol outlets had a greater number of alcohol related hospital admissions than other neighborhoods. To control for individual level characteristics, a …

The Effect Of Antioxidant Vitamins On Muscle Damage During A 50-Mile Endurance Ride In Horses, Danielle Irene Marrone Jan 2002

The Effect Of Antioxidant Vitamins On Muscle Damage During A 50-Mile Endurance Ride In Horses, Danielle Irene Marrone

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Plasma markers of muscle cell damage, creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase, were measured in the serum of 32 endurance exercised horses during a 50-mile endurance ride to determine if supplemental vitamin E singly or in combination with vitamin C could be effective in preventing exercise-induced muscle damage. Blood was collected by jugular venipuncture prior to and at 0, 23, 35, and 50 miles of a 50-mile endurance ride. Both creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase increased significantly pre-exercise to post-exercise in both vitamin E and vitamin E plus C groups. Vitamin E plus C was no more effective in preventing muscle …

An Economic Analysis Of Women's Schooling On Fertility And Contraceptive Use In Developing Countries: A Case Study Of Tanzania, Ayoub Shaban Ayoub

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the economic relationships between women's schooling, fertility rates, and contraceptive use in Tanzania where population growth and fertility rates are among the highest in the world and aggravate the already ailing economy. Two models are used: fertility and contraceptive use. The study surveys women ages 15 to 49 drawing on 1996 data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The study finds that women's schooling and other socioeconomic variables are important factors in explaining reproductive behavior. The fertility model indicates that education levels are consistently associated with lower fertility rates, while the contraceptive use model indicates that …

Farfalla: A Poetry Thesis, Vanessa Leigh Huff Jan 2002

Farfalla: A Poetry Thesis, Vanessa Leigh Huff

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Farfalla is a book of poetry of the lineage of poets who believe that poetry is not in poems. It is itself alive, and ruptures from poems. All poetry is political, as it is inevitably a product of the time and place in which it was written. It is affected by politics and effects its change, as Shelley has written: "Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.";Thus striving toward "legislator" this work in progress is seeking to be in continuous motion out of the confinements of poems to a place where purposes are real and methods are issues of …

Reverberations From The Collision Of Tort And Warranty (Products Liability Law Symposium In Memory Of Professor Gary T. Schwartz), James J. White Jan 2002

Reverberations From The Collision Of Tort And Warranty (Products Liability Law Symposium In Memory Of Professor Gary T. Schwartz), James J. White

Articles

In his famous Stanford Law Review article, When Worlds Collide,' Professor Marc Franklin foretold the troubles for American law in the impending collision of the tort of strict liability with the warranty of merchantability.2 We daily suffer the reverberations from that collision as courts struggle with the proper application of strict tort liability and breach of warranty in products liability cases. Lawyers who have not studied Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code (U.C.C.) are surprised to learn that virtually every buyer who has a strict tort claim for an injury caused by a defective product also has a potential …

Children ( N = 116) and caretakers ( N = 108) newly enrolled in four NRCs in Accra, Ghana were recruited and studied longitudinally at four time points: admission, interim, exit and postexit . Data collection included observations of activities at the NRCs, anthropometry, interviews, dietary assessments, and weighing of NRC foods. Caretaker/child pairs attended the NRCs 33% ± 21% of their total stay, and the majority (78%) discontinued participation before being officially discharged. At exit , ≥60% of children had …

Seasonality Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors, Donna Garland Robbins Jan 2002

Seasonality Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors, Donna Garland Robbins

All ETDs from UAB

Generalizability of possible seasonality of cardiovascular disease risk factors has not been demonstrated, and, if present, biologic mechanisms remain uncertain. This was addressed by examining cross-sectional seasonal variation in cardiovascular disease risk factors among Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) subjects, and cross-sectional and longitudinal seasonal variation in and interrelationships between lipids and thyroid hormone levels in a Lipid Variation Influence of Stress (LVIS) study subsample. Although crude analyses identified some significant seasonal variation in low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, physical activity, maximum heart rate, caloric intake, triglycerides, body weight and blood pressure overall and/or among race/gender strata …
