Stress Coping Strategies For Commercial Flight Crewmembers, Willem J. Homan

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This paper provides a selective examination of the current stress management literature and its practices. The author introduces strategies that can be utilized by commercial pilots to handle stressful events in the often-challenging flight environment and establishes a foundation for further empirical research in the area of human stress control in aviation settings. Stress management techniques adopted from sport psychology and management training programs are reviewed. First, stress and distress are defined and the physical, physiological, and emotional responses to stress are discussed. This is followed by an overview of the biology of stress. Next, traditional forms of stress avoidance …

Prey Resource Utilization By Coexistent Hydromedusae From Friday Harbor, Washington, Usa, John H. Costello, Sean Colin Jan 2002

Prey Resource Utilization By Coexistent Hydromedusae From Friday Harbor, Washington, Usa, John H. Costello, Sean Colin

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Prey selection patterns were quantified for a sympatric group of hydromedusae from Friday Harbor, WA. Selection patterns varied between species, but were largely replicable between sample dates and resembled dietary patterns found in similar studies from neighboring regions. Ambush-foraging medusae (Aglantha digitale, Sarsia tubulosa, and Proboscidactyla flavicirrata) fed primarily on crustacean and ciliated prey but the dietary niches of these hydromedusan species centered on different fractions of the available plankton. Consequently, little dietary overlap occurred between the ambush foraging hydromedusae. In contrast, the dietary niches of cruising predators (Aequorea victoria, Mitrocoma cellularia, and …

Organic Beef A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy Jan 2002

Organic Beef A Production Guide, Steven Mccoy

Bulletins 4000 -

Premium markets are expanding worldwide for certified organic and biodynamic beef products – those grown in accordance with recognised organic production and processing standards.

Many agricultural areas in Australia have the potential to produce organic beef, and several Western Australian and Eastern States organic producers are already exporting to Japan. Supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths have started to build the Australian domestic market.

Converting to an organic system can be easier - requiring fewer changes - in ‘low input’ rangeland cattle production than in more intensive pasture-based or feedlot production. But regardless of the type of enterprise, managing organic …

The Effects Of Singing On Blood Pressure In Classically Trained Singers, Kimberly Jaye Broadwater Jan 2002

The Effects Of Singing On Blood Pressure In Classically Trained Singers, Kimberly Jaye Broadwater

LSU Major Papers

Blood pressure readings were taken in four normotensive, classically trained singers of varying age and experience. The results show changes during the systolic and diastolic phases of blood pressure measurements while singing. While systolic blood pressure changes were individualized and random, diastolic blood pressure changes generally showed a direct correlation to changes in intrathoracic pressure. Additional research using a larger subject base involving normotensive, hypertensive, and hypotensive populations is warranted.

The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch Jan 2002

The Place Of Dietary Practices In The Lives Of Older Women, Lisa Marie Curch

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Studies have supported the benefits of positive dietary behaviors in preventing or reducing morbidity and extending longevity, as well as the psychosocial function of dietary practices for quality of life. Research is needed though on the dietary behaviors of elders in general and older women in particular, for whom gender affects lifelong dietary patterns. Health behavior theory has typically focused on psychological factors, to the neglect of sociocultural processes. This investigation utilized a life course perspective, enhanced by social interactionist elements, to address aspects of development and change in behavior neglected by health behavior theories, such as temporal dimensions and …

Does Increasing Daylength Control Seasonal Changes In Clutch Sizes Of Northern Pintails (Ana Acuta)?, Gary Krapu, Glen Sergeant, Alison Perkins

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We evaluated spatiotemporal variation in clutch sizes of Northern Pintails (pintails; Anas acuta) nesting in California (1985 to 1996), North Dakota (1982 to 1985), Saskatchewan (1982 to 1985) and Alaska (1991 to 1993) to determine whether seasonal declines in clutch size varied in ways that were consistent with a controlling influence of increasing day length. Pintails began nesting in mid-March in California, mid-April in North Dakota and Saskatchewan, and mid-May in Alaska. Observed durations of nesting were 70 ± 2.6 days (SE) in California, 60 ± 6.3 days in North Dakota, 66 ± 1.3 days in Saskatchewan, and 42 …

Immobilization Of Swift Foxes With Ketamine Hydrochloride-Xylazine Hydrochloride, Rebecca L. Telesco, Marsha A. Sovada

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

There is an increasing need to develop field immobilization techniques that allow researchers to handle safely swift foxes (Vulpes velox) with minimal risk of stress or injury. We immobilized captive swift foxes to determine the safety and effectiveness of ketamine hydrochloride and xylazine hydrochloride at different dosages. We attempted to determine appropriate dosages to immobilize swift foxes for an adequate field-handling period based on three anesthesia intervals (induction period, immobilization period, and recovery period) and physiologic responses (rectal temperature, respiration rate, and heart rate). Between October 1998–July 1999, we conducted four trials, evaluating three different dosage ratios of …

Use Of Spectral Radiance To Estimate In-Season Biomass And Grain Yield In Nitrogen- And Water-Stressed Corn, S.L. Osborne, James S. Schepers, D.D. Francis, Michael R. Schlemmer Jan 2002

Use Of Spectral Radiance To Estimate In-Season Biomass And Grain Yield In Nitrogen- And Water-Stressed Corn, S.L. Osborne, James S. Schepers, D.D. Francis, Michael R. Schlemmer

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Current technologies for measuring plant water status are limited, while recently remote sensing techniques for estimating N status have increased with limited research on the interaction between the two stresses. Because plant water status methods are time-consuming and require numerous observations to characterize a field, managers could benefit from remote sensing techniques to assist in irrigation and N management decisions. A 2-yr experiment was initiated to determine specific wavelengths and/or combinations of wavelengths indicative of water stress and N deficiencies, and to evaluate these wavelengths for estimating in-season biomass and corn (Zea mays L.) grain yield. The experiment was …

In 1999, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Nebraska established a field experiment to (1) quantify and understand the yield potential of corn and soybean under irrigated conditions, (2) identify efficient crop management practices to achieve yields that approach potential levels, and (3) determine the energy use efficiency, global warming and soil C-sequestration potential of intensively managed corn systems. The experiment compares systems that represent different levels of management intensity expressed as combinations of crop rotation (continuous corn, corn-soybean), plant density (low, medium, high) and nutrient management (recommended best management vs. intensive management). Detailed measurements include soil nutrient …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Eight lines of grain sorghum and their F1 hybrids were evaluated for contents of crude protein (CP), fat (FAT), and starch (STA); protein digestibility (PD); and in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD). The effect of seed weight (SW) on these traits and the potential use of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict them also were investigated. The male lines included three normal-seeded lines (TX2737, TX435, and P954063) and two largeseeded lines (PL-1 and Eastin1). The female lines included commonU.S. seed parent lines (Wheatland, Redlan, and SA3042). The lines and their hybrids were grown under dryland conditions at Kansas State …

Combinatorial Control Of Yeast Fet4 Gene Expression By Iron, Zinc, And Oxygen, Brian M. Waters, David J. Eide Jan 2002

Combinatorial Control Of Yeast Fet4 Gene Expression By Iron, Zinc, And Oxygen, Brian M. Waters, David J. Eide

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Acquisition of metals such as iron, copper, and zinc by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is tightly regulated. High affinity uptake systems are induced under metal-limiting conditions to maintain an adequate supply of these essential nutrients. Low affinity uptake systems function when their substrates are in greater supply. The FET4 gene encodes a low affinity iron and copper uptake transporter. FET4 expression is regulated by several environmental factors. In this report, we describe the molecular mechanisms underlying this regulation. First, we found that FET4 expression is induced in iron-limited cells by the Aft1 iron-responsive transcriptional activator. Second, FET …

Lawrence G. Harshman Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate medfly longevity and reproduction across a broad spectrum of diet restriction using a protocol similar to those applied in most rodent studies. Age-specific reproduction and age of death were monitored for 1,200 adult males and 1,200 females, each individually maintained on one of 12 diets from ad libitum to 30% of ad libitum. Diet was provided in a fixed volume of solution that was fully consumed each day, ensuring control of total nutrient consumption for every fly. Contrary to expectation and precedence, increased longevity was not observed at any level of …

1. Inasmuch as virtually all studies on mortality and reproduction in insects are conducted under conditions in which food availability is constant, little is known about the demographic response of insects to variable food environments. For example, it is not known if and to what extent the life expectancy of insects subjected to shortages of high-quality food will increase and/or whether this increase is associated with major decreases in lifetime reproduction.

2. Therefore cohorts of 100 individual female medflies were subjected to different sets of conditions of protein availability (interspersed with sugar-only diets) including ad libitum sugar-only (no protein), ad …

Effect Of Dietary Zinc Deficiency On Rat Lipid Concentrations, Samir M. Khoja, Zuhair M. Marzouki, Khaled M. Ashry, Sami A. Hamdi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the lipid profile in serum, liver, and testis of rats fed marginal and severe zinc deficient diets. METHODS: Three groups of rats were treated for 8 weeks with normal diet, marginally zinc deficient diet and severely zinc deficient diet. Lipid concentrations were measured in serum, liver, and testis of these groups. RESULTS: The concentrations of serum lipids were not significantly altered between marginally zinc deficient diet treated and control rats. However, in rats treated with severely zinc deficient diet, the concentrations of serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and phospholipids were significantly increased (P < 0.01) and (P < 0.001), whereas the concentration of triacylglycerol was significantly decreased (P < 0.01). However, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration was non-significantly different from controls. The concentrations of liver total cholesterol, triacylglycerol and phospholipids were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in rats treated with severely zinc deficient diet. The testicular concentration of total cholesterol was increased but this increase was non-significantly different from controls, whereas the testicular concentrations of triacylglycerol and phospholipids were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in rats treated with severely zinc deficient diet. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that a marginally zinc deficient diet does not play a significant role in altering rat lipid concentrations. However, the changes in serum lipid concentrations could be related to those changes in tissue lipid concentrations.

A Preliminary Analysis Of Proteolytic Activity Of Excretory-Secretory Products From Cyathostominea, Jane L. Kinsella, J. Ralph Lichtenfels, Michael F. Ryan Jan 2002

A Preliminary Analysis Of Proteolytic Activity Of Excretory-Secretory Products From Cyathostominea, Jane L. Kinsella, J. Ralph Lichtenfels, Michael F. Ryan

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The excretory-secretory product (ESP) derived from Cyathostominea in vitro was assessed, in terms of subunit composition, and proteolytic activity using as substrates azocasein and two synthetic fluorogenic peptides. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) resolved 13 subunits, and the presence of the protein cysteine proteinase activator dithiothreitol (DTT) revealed 21 subunits.DTTalso enhanced azocaseinolysis, and hydrolysis of carbobenzoxy-phenylalanyl-arginine-7-amido-4-methylcoumarin (Z-Phe-Arg-NHMec) and carbobenzoxy-arginyl-arginine-7-amido-4-methylcoumarin (Z-Arg-Arg-NHMec). At the optimum pH of 5.5, hydrolysis of Z-Phe-Arg-NHMec was three-fold greater than that of Z-Arg-Arg-NHMec suggesting that the proteolytic specificities of the ESP are more like those of papain or cathepsin L, rather than cathepsin B. In SDS-PAGE …
