Coral Recruitment To Various Artificial Substrata, Miami Beach, Fl, Nicholas C. Straccione
Coral Recruitment To Various Artificial Substrata, Miami Beach, Fl, Nicholas C. Straccione
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The City of Miami has placed 12 artificial reefs approximately 100m offshore in two parallel transects. The reason for this deployment was to tum a barren seabed into a productive environment for aquatic organisms. The reefs were placed close to the shoreline to allow easy access for snorkellers, divers, and fisherman. Three different types of reef materials were used in constructing the artificial reefs: boulders composed of limestone, concrete shaped as tetrahedrons, and concrete mixed with tire aggregate shaped as tetrahedrons. This study consisted of two separate assessments: I) a survey from two of each of the different reef types …

A Comparison Of Aeration Methods And Diets For Larval Culture Of The Edible Sea Urchin, Tripneustes Ventricosus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea), Ray Wolcott
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Tripneustes ventricosus (Lamarck 1816), a major near-shore herbivore in the Atlantic and Caribbean, has been harvested for human consumption in the Caribbean for centuries (Lawrence 2001a, b), occasionally at rates that exceed sustainability (Smith & Berkes 1991), and is among the species having economic importance (Lawrence & Bazhin 1998). Tripneustes ventricosus has recently been observed on the forereef controlling macroalgal growth in the absence of Diadema antillarum (Woodley 1999, Aronson & Precht 2000, Haley & Solandt 2001).
Large-scale culturing has the potential to produce T. ventricosus in sufficient numbers to be used for: bioremediation of coral reef degradation, restocking of …

Mortality Benefit Of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors After Cardiac Events In Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease, Peter A. Mccullough, Keisha R. Sandberg, Jerry Yee, Michael P. Hudson
Nephrology Articles
Hypothesis/introduction. The risks and benefits of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) after cardiac events are unknown. We sought to determine the independent effect of ACE inhibitors (ACE-I) on long-term mortality in ESRD patients after cardiac events. Materials and methods. We analysed a prospective coronary care unit registry and identified 527 ESRD patients, 368 with complete data on medications prescribed, over eight years at a single, tertiary centre. Results. The overall mean age was 64.4±13.8 years with 54.9% men, and 59.2% African-American. A total of 143/386 (37.0%) were prescribed ACE-I during the hospital stay for …
Targeting Receptor-Histidine Kinase Signaling In Staphylococcus Aureus, Gholson J. Lyon
Targeting Receptor-Histidine Kinase Signaling In Staphylococcus Aureus, Gholson J. Lyon
Student Theses and Dissertations
Two-component signaling systems involving receptor-histidine kinases (RHKs) are present in all branches of life outside of the animal kingdom. Remarkably, very little is known concerning the extracellular ligands that presumably bind to RHKs to initiate signaling. The two-component agr signaling circuit in the bacterial pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus, is one system where the ligands are known in chemical detail. These ligands (the AIPs) are short (7-9 aminoacyl residue) peptides containing a thiolactone structure, in which the α-carboxyl group of the C-terminal amino acid is linked to the sulfhydryl group of a cysteine, which is always the fifth amino acid from the …
Leptin And The Control Of Body Weight And Metabolism: Role For Stearoyl Coa Desaturase-1 And Other Leptin-Regulated Genes In The Liver, Paul Cohen
Student Theses and Dissertations
Leptin is an adipocyte-derived hormone that regulates energy balance, metabolism, and the neuroendocrine response to altered nutrition. Mice lacking leptin (ob/ob) or its receptor (db/db) are massively obese and hyperphagic. They also have increased triglyceride deposits in multiple peripheral organs, including the liver, massively enlarged and steatotic. Leptin elicits a metabolic response that cannot be explained by its anorectic effects alone. This response is characterized by weight loss, depletion of lipid from peripheral tissues, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. The mechanisms underlying these actions were largely unknown. This thesis addressed leptin's metabolic effects on the liver, an organ with a critical …
Site-Specific Incorporation Of Biochemical And Biophysical Probes Into Proteins Using Expressed Protein Ligation, Mande Holford
Site-Specific Incorporation Of Biochemical And Biophysical Probes Into Proteins Using Expressed Protein Ligation, Mande Holford
Student Theses and Dissertations
Protein engineering can be made far more powerful if a protein is not only expressed recombinantly but also altered covalently using synthetic chemistry. These two methods are brought together in the protein semi-synthesis technique Expressed Protein Ligation (EPL). In EPL, recombinant and synthetic polypeptides are joined together via a chemoselective ligation reaction. EPL was originally used to attach synthetic constructs to the C-terminus of recombinant proteins, but is now used to attach recombinant or synthetic polypeptides either at the N- or C-terminus of a protein or into the core of a protein. This thesis illustrates, with three distinct applications, the …
Loneliness Among College Students, Rowena P. Maliwanag
Loneliness Among College Students, Rowena P. Maliwanag
Honors Capstones
Everyone experiences loneliness, but high levels of loneliness are related to depression, low self-esteem, psychosomatic illnesses, and even suicide. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: 1) to find out of gender, year in school, marital status, grade point average, owning a car, awareness and use of support services, religious beliefs, living arrangement, and race are significant factors in the level of loneliness, 2) to educate the public about loneliness and implement programs to help college students. The scope of this study is limited to only American students. International students were taken into account in the original research but due …

The Regulation And Function Of Inositol Phosphorylceramide Synthase In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Angeleah Arlene Browdy
The Regulation And Function Of Inositol Phosphorylceramide Synthase In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Angeleah Arlene Browdy
Open Access Dissertations
IPC Synthase has been shown to be an essential membrane bound enzyme in yeast that catalyzes the transfer of PI to ceramide to yield the primary sphingolipid found in yeast, Inositolphosphorylceramide. A biochemical approach was taken to investigate the biological factors that regulate IC synthase activity in order to better understand the sphingolipid synthesis. A highly purified IPC synthase was purified over 1000-fold from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by a procedure that included Triton X-100 solubilization, as well as a series of ion exchange and hydrophobic column chromatography steps. The highly purified enzyme fraction contained three major bands at 45, …
The Egyptian Pharmaceutical Industry After Trips — A Practitioner's View, Nermien Al-Ali
The Egyptian Pharmaceutical Industry After Trips — A Practitioner's View, Nermien Al-Ali
Fordham International Law Journal
The pharmaceutical industry in Egypt is the largest in the Middle East and North Africa (“MENA”) region, and one that has attracted foreign investment despite the fact that Egyptian law has not always provided pharmaceuticals with patent protection. The situation changed with the signing of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (“TRIPS agreement” or “TRIPS”), strengthening the interest of the U.S. and other pharmaceutical companies in increasing their investment in Egypt. The Egyptian pharmaceutical industry is currently undergoing many changes spurred by the implementation of TRIPS and the globalization of trade. Many of these changes can be …

A Just Workplace And Living Wage For The Lowest Paid Staff Of Catholic Relief Services/Cameroon, Samantha Ellis
A Just Workplace And Living Wage For The Lowest Paid Staff Of Catholic Relief Services/Cameroon, Samantha Ellis
Capstone Collection
Many international relief organizations, whose mission it is to serve the poor and improve human rights, actually continue the cycle of poverty and injustice in their workplaces for some of their local employees. Catholic Relief Services/Cameroon (CRS/CM) is no exception to this, as this paper presents the case that a just workplace and just wage should be an area of concern for CRS/CM and for CRS as an organization, particularly for its lowest paid local employees. In my research, I explore the quality of life, cost of living, and just workplace issues for the Cameroonian guards at CRS/CM, where I …

Library Faculty Research
Dietetic educators concur that use of professional journals in the undergraduate curriculum promotes student reading skills, exposes students to current research, enhances computer skills and prepares dietetic students for the real world environment. Those of us in educational institutions are continually asked to review our university library holdings; prioritizing on the basis of department selections, cost, rate of inflation, use by faculty and students and availability through interlibrary loans and other document retrieval procedures. No doubt, those in industry and clinical and private practice are also watching their budgets and are asked to review expenses for professional publications.
Prevalence Of Multidrug Resistant Shigella Isolated In Malaysia, Kwai Lin Thong, C.H. Hoe, Y.T. Koh, R.M. Yasin
Prevalence Of Multidrug Resistant Shigella Isolated In Malaysia, Kwai Lin Thong, C.H. Hoe, Y.T. Koh, R.M. Yasin
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
Shigellosis, a disease caused by Shigella spp., is endemic in Malaysia. Its low infective dose and ease of spread through person-to-person transmission by the faecal-oral route make this infection difficult to control in outbreak situations. Antimicrobial therapy is recommended for shigellosis because it can shorten the severity and duration of illness, reduce shedding of the organism, and prevent secondary complications and deaths. However, due to the global emergence of drug resistance, the choices of antimicrobial agents for empiric therapy for shigellosis are now limited. Although antimicrobial resistance of Shigella spp. is well-documented in many countries (2-4), there is a lack …
Medical, Social And Legal Implications Of Treating Nausea And Vomiting Of Pregnancy, Robert L. Brent
Medical, Social And Legal Implications Of Treating Nausea And Vomiting Of Pregnancy, Robert L. Brent
The Selected Works of Robert Brent
This article will deal with medical, social, and legal implications of treating nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). Clinical problems occur when the symptoms become exaggerated and result in debilitation, dehydration, and hospitalization. The treatment of NVP in its early stages has the implication that it will prevent the more serious complications, including hospitalization. Therapeutic modalities discussed in this conference that have been used or are being tested are primarily symptomatic treatments (antihistamines, Bendectin (Merrell Dow; Cincinatti, Ohio), phenothiazines, hyponosis, accupressure, relaxation behavioral modification, audiogenic feedback training, newer medications, diet, and nutritional support). Bendectin is probably the most studied medication …
Child Care, Money And Maine: Implications For Federal And State Policy, William Hager, Allyson Dean, Judy Reidt-Parker
Child Care, Money And Maine: Implications For Federal And State Policy, William Hager, Allyson Dean, Judy Reidt-Parker
Faculty, Staff, and Alumni Books
"Child Care, Money and Maine" was chosen as the title for this document because, as we enter into the new century, child day care services have become an essential component to a healthy economy in Maine and in the nation. The availability of good child care has a major impact on a family’s ability to find, train for, and sustain employment. Child care is also crucial to modern businesses being able to recruit, retain and sustain employees. Lack of dependable and appropriate child care will be a critical barrier to the movement of low-income families from welfare to work. The …
