Identification Of A Genetic Locus Involved In Ppgpp Metabolism In Escherichia Coli, Roxanne Enid Garza
Identification Of A Genetic Locus Involved In Ppgpp Metabolism In Escherichia Coli, Roxanne Enid Garza
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Two genes involved in the metabolism of ppGpp are relA and spoT . A relX mutant has altered ppGpp levels, so relX may be a regulator of the RelA or SpoT enzymes. The growth of the relX mutant has been reported to be both temperature and leucine sensitive. It was discovered in this work that this relX mutant is not temperature sensitive, however it is leucine sensitive. The original goal was to study effects of the relX gene on ppGpp metabolism. During the process of mapping the relX gene, it was discovered that the leucine sensitivity was caused by some …

HIV and AIDS
While the integration of information, technologies, and services to respond to HIV/AIDS may seem closely related, there are a variety of issues that continue to create obstacles to integration. Among these are the stigmatizing nature of HIV infection and AIDS and discrimination faced by those who are infected or perceived to be infected; sexual practices and identities that remain socially unacceptable; gender roles and relations that make it difficult for women and men to access information, services, and technologies on HIV prevention; reluctance to recognize the special needs of young people; and barriers to service delivery created by broader economic, …
Microfinance And Households Coping With Hiv/Aids In Zimbabwe: An Exploratory Study, Horizons Program
Microfinance And Households Coping With Hiv/Aids In Zimbabwe: An Exploratory Study, Horizons Program
HIV and AIDS
The widespread prevalence of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa adversely affects millions of households. In recent years, microfinance has been proposed as a strategy to help the households of microentrepreneurs respond to the negative economic impacts of HIV/AIDS. This attention to the potential role of microfinance builds upon earlier research that shows that microfinance institutions (MFIs) that charge commercial rates of interest and use sound business practices can become operationally self-sustainable and help improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable nonpoor. This type of MFI generally offers small loans, often combined with savings services. An MFI may also offer business …

Designing Hiv/Aids Intervention Studies: An Operations Research Handbook, Andrew A. Fisher, James R. Foreit, John E. Laing, John E. Stoeckel, John Townsend
HIV and AIDS
This handbook has several objectives and uses. First, it is designed to help HIV/AIDS researchers develop and write a detailed operations research proposal. An appropriate use of the handbook is as a resource in workshops or courses on research design and proposal development. Thus, the organization of the handbook follows that of a research proposal, starting with identifying, defining, and justifying a research problem, and ending with how to prepare a budget. Although the handbook is not an academic textbook on research methods, it does provide a review of many key concepts and important methods essential for conducting HIV/AIDS field …

Acceptability Of Lettuce Treated With A Lactic Acid And Hydrogen Peroxide Antibacterial Solution, K. H. Mcwatters, I. B. Hashim, S. L. Walker, M. P. Doyle, A. P. Rimal
College of Agriculture
Whole iceberg lettuce heads were treated with 1.5% lactic acid plus 2.0% hydrogen peroxide solution (antibacterial solution) at 22C for 5 min. They were then either rinsed by immersing in running tap water for 5 min or neutralized with 2.5% sodium bicarbonate solution at 22C for 5 min followed by rinsing (immersion in running tap water) for 10 min, draining, and storing in sealed plastic containers at 5C for 0, 6, and 10 days along with untreated controls. The antibacterial treatment resulted in marginally acceptable lettuce at day 0; neutralization resulted in acceptable lettuce at day 0 but unacceptable after …

The Global Digital Divide: Focusing On Children, Susanna Frederick Fischer
The Global Digital Divide: Focusing On Children, Susanna Frederick Fischer
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
Professor Fischer takes a comparative look at children's access to information and communications technologies (ICT) in six countries across five continents- the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Mongolia, and Tanzania. Children's levels of access to ICT is strongly linked to the "global development divide." The article explores the difference between access in highly developed countries and lesser developed countries. The article further explores the extent of the global developmental divide, including the potentially bleak future facing children born in less developed countries. Next the article explores both sides of the debate that simply increasing ICT access can eliminate …

Recreation Gps As A Low-Cost Alternative For Introductory Courses In Natural Reaources, Jason Payne, Glenn P. Catts, Richard A. Lancia, Brent Lineberger
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
The Global Positioning System (GPS) has proven reliable for collecting spatial data for integration into a computer-based Geographic Information System (GIS). However, high cost often prohibits the purchase of individual GPS units for each student in a class. Recent advances in technology coupled with decreasing prices have made recreational GPS a low-cost alternative for introductory courses in Natural Resource Management. These units utilize 12-channel receivers, range in price from $115 to $500, and exhibit a point-location accuracy within 14 meters 95% of the time (6.2m - 66% of the time). Although recreational units lack the capacity for differential correction through …
