Potential Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Mule Deer And Pronghorn Populations In Western Wyoming, Hall Sawyer, Fred Lindzey, Doug Mcwhirter, Keith Andrews Jan 2002

Potential Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Mule Deer And Pronghorn Populations In Western Wyoming, Hall Sawyer, Fred Lindzey, Doug Mcwhirter, Keith Andrews

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Western Wyoming is home to the largest, most diverse ungulate populations in the Rocky Mountain region. Maintenance of these populations and protection of their habitats is a primary concern among public and private sectors. While urban expansion, habitat loss, disease and changes in vegetation contribute to management concerns, extensive energy development is thought to pose the most serious threat to mule deer and pronghorn populations. Southwestern Wyoming is rich with oil and gas resources and has consistently produced 10 million barrels of oil each year, with gas production increasing steadily since the early 1980s. A five-county area (Sweetwater, Carbon, Sublette, …

Mammals Of The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument: A Literature And Museum Survey, Jerran T. Flinders, Duke S. Rogers, Jackee L. Webber-Alston, Harry A. Barber

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This is the first treatment of the mammals of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM). GSENM was established in 1996 as a 1.7-million-acre (680,000-ha) federal land reserve under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To successfully manage this new monument, the BLM is presently developing a management action plan. To provide information for the proper management of mammal species of the area, we have reviewed background literature for each mammal potentially found within the Monument boundaries. We propose that a core area, surrounded by a buffer matrix, be used in GSENM and surrounding public lands to preserve …

Social Support, Spirituality, Psychological Distress And Quality Of Life In Cancer Patients, Nicole Denise Alexander Jan 2002

Social Support, Spirituality, Psychological Distress And Quality Of Life In Cancer Patients, Nicole Denise Alexander

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cancer involves considerable physical and psychological complications. This reality, along with longer life expectancy, promotion of patient choice regarding life-sustaining measures, and concerns regarding distribution of health care funds highlight the need to focus on quality as well as quantity of life for individuals dealing with this disease. Although a relationship between psychosocial factors and quality of life in cancer patients has been speculated, the type and degree of influence is currently unclear. Using multiple regression analysis, potential predictors of quality of life for cancer patients were examined. Among the predictors considered were social support, spirituality, and psychological distress. The …

Characterization Of Phosphate Uptake System In Helicobacter Pylori, Gengshi Lu Jan 2002

Characterization Of Phosphate Uptake System In Helicobacter Pylori, Gengshi Lu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Helicobacter pylori is known to be associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. Evidence strongly suggests that more than 50% of the population of the world is colonized by H. pylori with and without disease symptoms. It is now considered one of the most common human pathogens. Phosphate is an essential nutrient for all cells and its availability in the environment varies widely. In H. pylori , phosphate uptake is dependent upon the pH of medium and the rate of uptake is greatly reduced in acidic environments. HP1491 from ATCC 26695 encodes a putative phosphate permease, which has …

Introduction To Endangered Peoples Of Africa And The Middle East : Struggles To Survive And Thrive, Robert K. Hitchcock, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East: Struggles to Survive and Thrive is about human populations residing in Africa and the Middle East, a diverse region that is connected geographically, culturally, and historically. The African continent is vast and covers 11.7 million square miles, or an area slightly larger than the combined area of the United States and South America (Table 1). Today, the African continent is home to some 771 million people distributed within fifty-four separate countries. Of the world's continents, Africa is by far the most diverse culturally. In Sudan, for example, there are over 200 ethnic …

The Colonizing Mission Of The U.S. In Puerto Rico, Pedro Caban Jan 2002

The Colonizing Mission Of The U.S. In Puerto Rico, Pedro Caban

Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship

In the summer of 1898 the United States attained its long-standing goal of acquiring strategic insular possessions in the Pacific and the Caribbean. Moreover, with its decisive defeat of Spain, U.S. expansionists could rightly claim that their nation had achieved imperial status. But the United States not only appropriated far-flung exotic islands but also claimed sovereignty over approximately 10 million inhabitants of the lands ceded by Spain1 The sobering question that confronted the United States after the euphoria of military victory was the legal status and political rights of these subject peoples. Eventually it devised a complicated structure of …

Overview Of The Use Of The The U.S. Epa Exposure Factors Handbook, Jacqueline Moya, Linda Phillips Jan 2002

Overview Of The Use Of The The U.S. Epa Exposure Factors Handbook, Jacqueline Moya, Linda Phillips

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Risk assessments are important components of the decision making process. At hazardous waste sites, they are used as tools to determine appropriate cleanup levels. Therefore, it is critical that the best up-to-date methods, models, and exposure data are available to the exposure and risk assessor to realistically estimate the potential for human and ecological exposures to environmental contaminants. The EPA Exposure Factors Handbook published in 1997 is a tool available to exposure assessors which summarizes statistical data on exposure factors necessary to conduct human health exposure assessments. Since it was first published by EPA in 1989, the handbook has been …

Chemical Contaminants In Juvenile Gray Whales (Eschrichtius Robustus) From A Subsistence Harvest In Arctic Feeding Grounds, Karen L. Tilbury, John E. Stein, Cheryl A. Krone, Robert L. Brownell Jr., S.A. Blokhin, Jennie L. Bolton, Don W. Ernest Jan 2002

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Gray whales are coastal migratory baleen whales that are benthic feeders. Most of their feeding takes place in the northern Pacific Ocean with opportunistic feeding taking place during their migrations and residence on the breeding grounds. The concentrations of organochlorines and trace elements were determined in tissues and stomach contents of juvenile gray whales that were taken on their Arctic feeding grounds in the western Bering Sea during a Russian subsistence harvest. These concentrations were compared to previously published data for contaminants in gray whales that stranded along the west coast of the US during their northbound migration. Feeding in …

Dispersal And Emerging Ecological Impacts Of Ponto-Caspian Species In The Laurentian Great Lakes, Henry A. Vanderploeg, Thomas F. Nalepa, David J. Jude, Edward L. Mills, Kristen T. Holeck, James R. Liebig, Igor A. Grigorovich, Henn Ojaveer Jan 2002

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We describe, explain, and “predict” dispersal and ecosystem impacts of six Ponto-Caspian endemic species that recently invaded the Great Lakes via ballast water. The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, and quagga mussel, Dreissena bugensis, continue to colonize hard and soft substrates of the Great Lakes and are changing ecosystem function through mechanisms of ecosystem engineering (increased water clarity and reef building), fouling native mussels, high particle filtration rate with selective rejection of colonial cyanobacteria in pseudofeces, alteration of nutrient ratios, and facilitation of the rapid spread of their Ponto-Caspian associates, the benthic amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus and the round goby, …

Ec02-173 Spotted And Diffuse Knapweed, Neil L. Heckman, Ryan M. Goss, Roch E. Gaussoin, Stevan Z. Knezevic, John L. Lindquist

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Spotted knapweed (Centaure amaculosa Lam. = C. biebersteinii DC.) and diffuse knapweed (C.diffusa Lam.) are two of Nebraska’s seven noxious weeds. They are also noxious in at least 17 other states. These are closely related species that are well adapted to a variety of habitats including open forests, rangelands and pastures, Conservation Reserve Program lands, roadsides, and ditch banks. Centaurea is a large genus of over 400 species, 32 of which are common weeds of the United States and several of which [e.g., yellowstar thistle, C. solstitalis L, and Russian knapweed, C. repens L. =Acroptilon repens (L.) …
