Disability & Aging
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have contracted with the Muskie School of Public Service to develop a technical assistance guide for use by states and CMS regional offices to assess and improve the quality of home and community-based care (HCBC) to Medicaid beneficiaries. 1 The project will identify tools, measures, standards, and oversight mechanisms for performance measurement and quality improvement of long term care services delivered under federal and state-funded HCBC programs, exclusive of consumer-directed services. In addition to highlighting promising state practices, the project will describe the opportunities and challenges of applying advancements in the field …

Genetic Parameters And Responses Of Linear Type, Yield Traits, And Somatic Cell Scores To Divergent Selection For Predicted Transmitting Ability For Type In Holsteins, B. J. Degroot, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck, Erin L. Marotz
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The objective was to examine the direct and correlated responses of linear type, yield traits, and somatic cell scores (SCS) to divergent selection for predicted transmitting ability for type (PTAT) in Holsteins, while maintaining selection for yield traits across lines. For four generations, one-half of the University of Nebraska research Holstein herd was bred to Holstein sires with PTAT -1.50 and the other half to sires with PTAT - 1.25, with nearly equal predicted transmitting abilities for yield traits for both groups. Estimates of genetic and residual correlations and heritabilities were obtained from REML estimates of (co)variance components. Model for …

The present invention is directed to methods of using pro-NAD agents capable of enhancing the dermal and epidermal skin cell NAD content. These pro-NAD agents may be administered topically, orally, or parenterally to enhance DNA repair and other protective responses to DNA damage. The invention further relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising pro-NAD agents that effectively elevate intracellular NAD content. Finally, the invention relates to the method of using the pro-NAD agents to treat disorders such as sunburn and other skin deterioration that results from DNA damage in skin cells.

Faculty Exchange Program Finishes Third Successful Year, Lynn Lutgen
Faculty Exchange Program Finishes Third Successful Year, Lynn Lutgen
Cornhusker Economics
The Agricultural Economics Department recently completed its third year of involvement in USDA’S Faculty Exchange Program. This year we had five participants instead of the usual four; they came from Russian, the Ukraine and Kazakhstan. While in Nebraska they took classes, developed new course outlines and wrote articles that they will use on their return to their universities. While in the United States they traveled and learned about our business and work with the Scottsbluff Extension Service, learning about extension and distance education. All these things were designed to help them make changes when they return home. The following are …
