Three women narrate their lives in French, the colonist's language, instead of in Arabic, their mother tongue. They pay homage to their families in order to rid themselves of guilty and revengeful feelings. In Les saisons de passage and Le bonheur a la queue glissante, Andree Chedid and Abla Farhoud express their love for an absent mother, who represents both the rebellious and submissive arabic woman. In La prisonniere, Malika Oufkir denounces the king's injustice for having condemned Oufkir's family for life and General Oufkir to death because he attempted a military putch against Hassan II. These three stories …

In this essay, I explore various dimensions of theoretical terms such as exile, nomadism, diaspora, and border. These terms have a temporal and spatial dimension. They are not equivalent to each other and they generate different kinds of identity narratives. In fact, in their strict definitions, as John Durham Peters demonstrates, they oppose each other. Yet, in contemporary texts, fiction and non- fiction, regardless of the individual experiences portrayed, they are also often intertwined. It is the complex mobility of the terms that define the fields of research associated with migration, literary or not, that I render apparent in the …

Paul (Smaïl) Et Le Loup: De La Carna Comme Un Des Beaux-Arts, Mireille Rosello Jan 2002

Paul (Smaïl) Et Le Loup: De La Carna Comme Un Des Beaux-Arts, Mireille Rosello

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Since the publication of Vivre me tue in 1997, Paul Smaïl's published statements about the necessity for a "Beur" writer to protect his dignity and his freedom behind a pseudonym have generated a significant layer of metafiction which this essay proposes to examine. An analysis of Smaïl's different types of narrative accounts will help us elucidate the cultural and literary effects produced by the writer's strategy.

Managing Semantic Content For The Web, Amit P. Sheth, Clemens Bertram, David Avant, Brian Hammond, Krzysztof Kochut, Yashodhan Warke

Kno.e.sis Publications

By associating meaning with content, the Semantic Web will facilitate search, interoperability, and the composition of complex applications. A recent Scientific American article described the Semantic Web as 'an extension of the current Web in which information is given well-defined meaning, better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.' Not long ago, researchers at a Stanford University symposium predicted that this second phase of the Web would be as revolutionary as the Web itself.

Combating Drought Through Preparedness, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 2002

Combating Drought Through Preparedness, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Drought is a complex, slow-onset phenomenon that affects more people than any other natural haz-ard and results in serious economic, social, and environmental impacts. Although drought affects virtually all climatic regimes and has significant consequences in both developed and developing countries, its impacts are especially serious in developing countries where dryland agriculture pre-dominates. The impacts of drought are often an indicator of unsustainable land and water manage-ment practices, and drought assistance or relief provided by governments and donors encourages land managers and others to continue these practices. This often results in a greater dependence on government and a decline in …

In Four Four: A Sydney Writers' Festival Event, Gerry Turcotte Jan 2002

In Four Four: A Sydney Writers' Festival Event, Gerry Turcotte

Arts Live Performances

Four very special authors - Barbara Blackman, Brian Castro, Gretchen Miller and Gerry Turcotte - tell their own stories about nights spent dancing. Four extraordinary musicians - Sandy Evans (saxophones), Alister Spence (piano), Brett Hirst (double bass), and Philip South (percussion) - bring the stories to life through music.

As the writers tell their stories the musicians respond to the words, weaving lines of emotion and adding layers of meaning. The result is a multi-dimensional performance experience arising from a shifting spiral of text, speech music and sound.

Concept, composition and design by Gretchen Miller.

Written and performed by Barbara …

Re(De)Fining Narrative Events: Examining Television Narrative Structure, M. J. Porter, D. L. Larson, Allison Harthcock, K. B. Nellis Jan 2002

Re(De)Fining Narrative Events: Examining Television Narrative Structure, M. J. Porter, D. L. Larson, Allison Harthcock, K. B. Nellis

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

The authors introduce a new analytical instrument, the Scene Function Model, as an expansion of Seymour Chatman's theoretical classification of story events into kernels and satellites. The Scene Function Model is designed to examine the narrative function of television scenes and provide the user with a clearer understanding of the structure of the television narrative.

Monstrous Youth In Suburbia: Disruption And Recovery Of The American Dream, Kristen Hoerl Jan 2002

Monstrous Youth In Suburbia: Disruption And Recovery Of The American Dream, Kristen Hoerl

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

Although the American Dream myth idealizes youth who grow up in suburbia as culturetypes of imminent success, the Columbine High School shootings demonstrated that all not suburban youth will grow up to succeed. The extensive news media coverage of the tragedy reflects broader anxieties about the declining status of the suburbs in American society. In the wake of the shootings, the news media created a myth of monstrous youth in suburbia that functioned to repair suburbanites’ waning faith in the myth of the American Dream.
