The Elegant Simplicity Of Family Preservation Practice Legecies And Lessons, James K. Whittaker Jan 2002

The Elegant Simplicity Of Family Preservation Practice Legecies And Lessons, James K. Whittaker

Journal of Family Strengths

An earlier version of this manuscript was prepared for the Chapin Hall invitational seminar on family preservation, The Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago, September 16 & 17, 1999. The author wishes to acknowledge the comments and helpful suggestions of seminar participants-Jacqueline McCroskey, Martha Shirk, Fran Jacobs, John Schuerman, Lee Schorr, Charlotte Booth, Kristi Nelson, Susan Kelly, Frank Farrow, and Susan Notkin. These comments, as indeed many of their prior contributions, have had a seminal effect on my thinking about family preservation services over the years. Clark Peters and other Chapin Hall staff deserve special thanks …

Promising Practices To Engage Families And Support Family Preservation, Marianne Berry Jan 2002

Promising Practices To Engage Families And Support Family Preservation, Marianne Berry

Journal of Family Strengths

The Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997 (ASFA) is the latest legislation in two decades of important child welfare policy in the United States. The Adoption and Safe Families Act has served to shorten the period of time that caseworkers and families have to show that families are making progress toward family preservation, with permanency decisions being made after 12 months, rather than 18. The importance of engaging and motivating families in services has therefore increased. The practice directive of ASFA can be summarized as 'Act Smart, Fast, and Accountable. " Using findings from largely correlational research, concrete recommendations …

Reflections On The Roles And Values Of Educational Leaders : A Reflective Essay, Scott Schipper Jan 2002

Reflections On The Roles And Values Of Educational Leaders : A Reflective Essay, Scott Schipper

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on my personal, philosophical perspective on education, the purpose of school, and my values and beliefs relative to educational leadership. I think it is valuable for educational leaders to reflect upon their philosophies of education. It serves as a reminder to them of why they are in education and how they go about obtaining their own personal goals. These beliefs that I will be sharing have been formulated over my years of teaching and from my experiences throughout this leadership program.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Scott B. Bailey

Graduate Research Papers

The educational process has been an important part of this country since our founding fathers first stepped off the ships and started a new life. The
pioneers continued to move westward and educate their youth. Reform-minded individuals set out to improve our educational process. These educated individuals soon developed wondrous items of technology. Individuals educated by dedicated leaders in the field of education made those technological advancements possible. These leaders developed qualities, which were continually improved into the leadership ideas presented in this reflective paper. We need to expect the best of our students as they attend our institutions. An …

Waking Up: Windows Of Encouragement, Alison Bates

McNair Scholars Journal

Waking Up is a three-dimensional installation that uses the stories, opinions, and messages of others addressing their reasons to live. These submissions are collected through a website created for this project and integrated with my own interviews and photographs. The photographs used in this project vary in format, size, and media. The physical piece is both ready for installation and available to a larger audience via a virtual gallery on the project website. The text and images built into the project allow the viewer to reflect on his/her own understanding of the feelings associated with suicide and recovery. My project’s …

Getting Digitization Projects Done In A Medium-Sized Academic Library: A Collaborative Effort Between Technical Services, Systems, Special Collections, And Collection Development, Michael Boock, Bruce Jeppesen, William C. Barrow

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Cleveland State University Library, a medium-sized academic library serving approximately 15,000 students, is engaged in large-scale efforts to digitize and make accessible online collections of unique Cleveland-related materials. The Cleveland State University Library Special Collections digitization and cataloging efforts use staff from several different library organizational units. The collaboration of staff with specific expertise in long-standing library functions -- special collections, cataloging, systems, archives, selection -- to create two Web databases is described. The collaborative effort has proven effective in getting resources processed, archived, digitized, described, promoted, and made accessible in a highly efficient and effective manner. The responsibilities of …

Flux Recovery From Primal Hybrid Finite Element Methods, So-Hsiang Chou, Do Y. Kwak, Kwang Y. Kim

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A flux recovery technique is introduced and analyzed for the computed solution of the primal hybrid finite element method for second-order elliptic problems. The recovery is carried out over a single element at a time while ensuring the continuity of the flux across the interelement edges and the validity of the discrete conservation law at the element level. Our construction is general enough to cover all degreesof polynomialsand gridsof triangular or quadrilateral type. We illustrate the principle using the Raviart–Thomas spaces, but other well-known related function spaces such as the Brezzi–Douglas–Marini (BDM) or Brezzi–Douglas–Fortin–Marini (BDFM) space can be used as …

Through Assyria's Eyes: Israel's Relationship With Judah, Tammi J. Schneider Jan 2002

Through Assyria's Eyes: Israel's Relationship With Judah, Tammi J. Schneider

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The goal of the Bible was not to record history, and the text does not shy away from theological explanations for events. Given this problematic relationship between sacred interpretation and historical accuracy, historians welcomed the discovery of ancient Assyrian cuneiform documents that refer to people and places mentioned in the Bible. Discovered in the 19th century, these historical records are now being used by scholars to corroborate and augment the biblical text, especially the Bible’s “historical books” of Kings. This field for comparison complements the recent trend among biblical scholars of using new interpretative methodologies and archaeology to question some …

Aftershocks And Pore Fluid Diffusion Following The 1992 Landers Earthquake, William Bosl, A Nur Jan 2002

Aftershocks And Pore Fluid Diffusion Following The 1992 Landers Earthquake, William Bosl, A Nur

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

We model the evolution of regional stress following the 1992 Landers earthquake in order to test the importance of pore fluid flow in producing aftershocks. Rising fluid pressure due to pore fluid flow and the resulting Coulomb stress changes were found to be strongly correlated with the time and location of aftershock events. Regional aftershock frequencies computed by integrating pore pressure decay rates also agreed quite well with aftershock data. Calculations show that regions of rising postseismic poroelastic Coulomb stress overlap considerably with regions of positive coseismic Coulomb stress. Thus pore fluid flow, which affects pore pressure within faults and …
