An Automated Technique For Monitoring Nocturnal Avian Vocalizations., Brent Burt, James B. Johnson, Daniel Saenz, Richard N. Conner

Faculty Publications

Using audio recording dataloggers, we collected nocturnal bird vocalizations at different sites within the Davy Crockett National Forest and the Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest. We detected vocalizations of a variety of nocturnal and diurnal species. This technology is useful for its application to avifauna.

Hiv/Aids-Related Stigma And Discrimination: A Conceptual Framework And An Agenda For Action, Richard Parker, Peter Aggleton, Kathy Attawell, Julie Pulerwitz, Lisanne Brown Jan 2002

Hiv/Aids-Related Stigma And Discrimination: A Conceptual Framework And An Agenda For Action, Richard Parker, Peter Aggleton, Kathy Attawell, Julie Pulerwitz, Lisanne Brown

HIV and AIDS

In 1987, Jonathan Mann, then director of the WHO Global Programme on AIDS, identified three phases of the HIV/AIDS epidemic: the epidemic of HIV, the epidemic of AIDS, and the epidemic of stigma, discrimination, and denial. Despite international efforts to tackle HIV/AIDS since then, stigma and discrimination (S&D) remain among the most poorly understood aspects of the epidemic. This poor understanding is due in part to the complexity and diversity of S&D, but also to limitations in current thinking within the field and the inadequacy of available theoretical and methodological tools. This paper proposes a new conceptual framework to help …

Groundwater Movement At The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Yggdrasil Institute Program Jan 2002

Groundwater Movement At The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Yggdrasil Institute Program

Yggdrasil Institute Program

The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant was built in 1952, and began operations at the end of 1954, to increase the government’s capacity to produce highly enriched uranium for naval reactors and the burgeoning nuclear power industry. The purpose of this report is to review the present and past environmental record of the Portsmouth facility, focusing on groundwater and the facilities on the east side of the site.

This research was completed money allocated during Round 1 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University was named conservator of these works.

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Tami L. Mclean Jan 2002

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Tami L. Mclean

Graduate Research Papers

I believe that the role of the principal is vital in creating the workplace and learning community necessary to prepare students for the future. The principal serves many roles including communicator and leader. I know that I possess the skills necessary to fulfill these roles and effectively move a district forward. My vision for the future is not to use a top-down approach in leading a school, but a broad-based participation approach. The school in which I work will strive to enhance leadership in all teachers, form a community of lifelong learners, and grow and reflect individually as professionals. I …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Jeffrey N. Novotny

Graduate Research Papers

Principals are leaders who must use their personal characteristics, morals, ethics and knowledge to successfully lead their staff and community. When a principal develops and understands his personal qualities and applies them. his school will have the leadership component necessary for success. This paper is my attempt to learn about myself through reflection and education. It is a compilation of my beliefs on leadership, schooling, education, others and myself--all of which will guide me when I become a school administrator.

Effects Of Ph And Aluminium Ion Concentration On Spore Germination And Growth Of Some Soil Fungi, Şükrü Dursun, Lynne Boddy, Juliet C. Frankland Jan 2002

Effects Of Ph And Aluminium Ion Concentration On Spore Germination And Growth Of Some Soil Fungi, Şükrü Dursun, Lynne Boddy, Juliet C. Frankland

Turkish Journal of Biology

Concentrations of three aluminium compounds significantly affected the mycelial extension of Trichoderma viride with low pH values growing on agar media, and the largest effect was recorded with aluminium chloride. Experiments in this work showed that there were significant relationships between Al concentration and pH in the Al inhibition of fungal activity on agar media. Different effects of aluminium concentration on the mycelial extension rate of eight fungal species inoculated on pH gradient plates were recorded. The spore germination of Phoma exigua and Cladosporium herbarum was reduced by increasing aluminium and acidity, and low pH increased the inhibitory effect of …

Finding And Evaluating Curricular Resources On The Web For Teaching Junior Certificate Mathematics, Alice Mcdonnell, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Brendan Tangney

Conference papers

This study addresses the difficulties of locating quality curricular information on the WWW focussing on the Irish Junior Certificate Mathematics curriculum. In the development of efficient searching techniques, an examination of efficient search / metasearch engines, directories, education sites and the Invisible Web was undertaken. The techniques developed aim to provide an overall searching strategy for educators on the WWW. An initial selection of relevant material was located on the World Wide Web and selection criteria were applied, providing predictive ratings by one of the authors. A key element of this study is the development of an adaptive, ongoing peer …

The Corinthian

This study attempts to understand the differences in activity among an emergent television/Internet audience. The Internet has provided a new entertainment opportunity for producers of television programming. Those television viewers who have also reached out to their favorite television show websites have resulted in a new audience. Examining the programming genre of reality television, two constructs were developed and a written survey administered to a convenience sample of college freshmen. The construct "dual users" was created to examine the television audience that also visits television programming websites. Single users (those that only watch the television show) were compared to the …

Cognitive And Communicative Abilities Of Grey Parrots, Irene M. Pepperberg Jan 2002

Cognitive And Communicative Abilities Of Grey Parrots, Irene M. Pepperberg

Sentience Collection

Grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) solve various cognitive tasks and acquire and use English speech in ways that often resemble those of very young children. Given that the psittacine brain is organized very differently from that of mammals, these results have intriguing implications for the study and evolution of vocal learning, communication, and cognition.

In Search Of King Solomon’S Ring: Cognitive And Communicative Studies Of Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Irene M. Pepperberg

Sentience Collection

During the past 24 years, I have used a modeling technique (M/R procedure) to train Grey parrots to use an allospecific code (English speech) referentially; I then use the code to test their cognitive abilities. The oldest bird, Alex, labels more than 50 different objects, 7 colors, 5 shapes, quantities to 6, 3 categories (color, shape, material) and uses ‘no’, ‘come here’, wanna go X’ and ‘want Y’ (X and Y are appropriate location or item labels). He combines labels to identify, request, comment upon or refuse more than 100 items and to alter his environment. He processes queries to …
