Journal Articles: Epidemiology

In a cross-sectional survey of 226 HIV-infected men, we examined the occurrence of diarrhoea and its relationship to drinking water consumption patterns, risk behaviours, immune status and medication use. Diarrhoea was reported by 47% of the respondents. Neither drinking boiled nor filtered water was significantly associated with diarrhoea (OR = 0.5 [0.2, 1.6], 1.2 [0.6, 2.5] respectively), whereas those that drank bottled water were at risk for diarrhoea (OR = 3.0 [1.1, 7.8]). Overall, 47% always or often used at least one water treatment. Of the 37% who were very concerned about drinking water, 62% had diarrhoea, 70% always or …

Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Performance And Satisfaction: A Muiti-Stage Study, Ta-Tao Chuang, Michael Bernard, Shahid I. Ali

Journal of International Information Management

Research in computer-supported cooperative learning provides evidence that collaborative technology can enhance learning performance and increase affective experiences in the context of cooperative learning. Most studies, however, have examined the learning performance only during the middle and end of the process. It is not clear how information technology continuously facilitates and improves student performance and learning experience over time. By employing a multidisciplinary approach, the research presented in this article drew research findings in the fields of communication, information systems, and education to examine cooperative learning processes with a continuous, longitudinal study. Based on a descriptive model of computer-supported cooperative …

Using Cowpea To Manage Soil Phosphorus Accumulation From Poultry Litter Applications In A Cool-Season Vegetable Rotation, Clydette M. Alsup-Egbers, B A. Kahn Jan 2002

Using Cowpea To Manage Soil Phosphorus Accumulation From Poultry Litter Applications In A Cool-Season Vegetable Rotation, Clydette M. Alsup-Egbers, B A. Kahn

College of Agriculture

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] cover crops were grown in a rotation with broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck.), spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.), and turnip greens [Brassica rapa L. var. (DC.) Metzg. utilis] to evaluate the legume's ability to remove excess P from soils when poultry litter was used as a fertilizer. Fertilizer treatments were: 1) litter to meet each crop's recommended preplant N requirements (1×); 2) litter at twice the recommended rate (2×); and 3) urea at the 1× rate as the control. Following the vegetable crops, cowpeas were planted on half of each replication, while the other …

Graduate Research Papers

The power that schools have to positively impact students' lives and futures is amazing to me. Leading a staff, student body, and a community into positive relationships with one another can be a challenging task and service. Accomplishing this task can be rewarding. Schools exist to promote learning. Learning takes place throughout one's lifetime. The opportunity to lead a school is the opportunity to positively impact lives in the present, as well as the future.

Messages For Minority Groups In Australia From International Studies, Lisa Greenwood, Tracey Frigo, Paul Hughes Jan 2002

Messages For Minority Groups In Australia From International Studies, Lisa Greenwood, Tracey Frigo, Paul Hughes

Indigenous Education Research

Results from international studies such as the recent OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) tend to be reported in the media in terms of national averages, with a focus on the ranking of participating countries. However, the disaggregation and analysis of data collected from various social groupings within countries provides an opportunity to investigate the extent to which countries support students from various minority groups to achieve equitable educational outcomes. In Australia, the gap between educational outcomes for Indigenous1 and non-Indigenous students at all levels of education has long been a concern (Long et al, 1999). In recent years, …
