China’S Role In Indonesia's “Crush Malaysia” Campaign, A Dahana Dec 2002

China’S Role In Indonesia's “Crush Malaysia” Campaign, A Dahana

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

This paper argues that contrary to the traditionally accepted opinion, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) participated in the Indonesian campaign to crush Malaysia half-heartedly. In fact, despite its strong propaganda broadcast in supporting Indonesia, the PRC was actually a passive participant in the campaign. This is due to the fact that at that time the Chinese supported Malayan Communist Party, which was pursuing a more conciliatory policy toward the Malaysian government. Furthermore, China was probably more concerned with the well-being of ethnic Chinese Malaysia than supporting the local communist party.

Sensorless Super-High-Speed Switched Reluctance Generators, Chris S. Edrington, Babek Fahimi, Ray B. Sepe Dec 2002

Sensorless Super-High-Speed Switched Reluctance Generators, Chris S. Edrington, Babek Fahimi, Ray B. Sepe

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Operating at super high speeds emerges as a need in various sectors of industry including military, automotive and home appliances. Generation of electric power at such speeds has the inherent advantage of compactness and elimination of speed adaptation means. Switched Reluctance (SR) drives favor high-speed operation due to their inherent ruggedness and robust structure. In addition, they represent a very long constant power region allowing an efficient operation in a compact form. Moreover, SRM drives can tolerate structural and thermal conditions imposed by the application. Finally, they are inherently fault tolerant due to their modular configuration. To take steps towards …

Semantic Exploration Of Lecture Videos, Edward Altman, Yu Chen, Wai Chong Low Dec 2002

Semantic Exploration Of Lecture Videos, Edward Altman, Yu Chen, Wai Chong Low

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

E-Learning is rapidly changing the way that universities and corporations offer education and training. In recent years, the acquisition and distribution of rich media content has been largely automated, However, existing applications are functionally and visually static and remain organized around the delivery media, rather than the knowledge representation and learning tasks of the student. The innovative approach of this system is the extraction of semantically meaningful structures in the lecture combined with text analysis to support task based queries. In this demonstration we will show this combination of pedagogical and content descriptions leads to novel forms of visualization and …

Load-Sensitive Transmission Power Control In Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, Seung Jong Park, Raghupathy Sivakumar Dec 2002

Load-Sensitive Transmission Power Control In Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, Seung Jong Park, Raghupathy Sivakumar

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Transmission power control in ad-hoc networks has hitherto been used only for achieving connectivity of networks. It has been implicitly assumed that the optimal throughput performance in ad-hoc networks can be achieved when using the minimum transmission power required to keep the network connected. However, in this paper we argue that such an assumption remains valid only under high node densities, which is not the characteristic of typical ad-hoc networks. Using both throughput and throughput per unit energy as the optimization criteria, we demonstrate that the optimal transmission power depends on several network characteristics such as the number of stations, …

Impacts Of Extension Education On Improving Residential Stormwater Quality: Monitoring Results, Michael E. Dietz, John C. Clausen, Glenn S. Warner, Karen K. Filchak Dec 2002

Impacts Of Extension Education On Improving Residential Stormwater Quality: Monitoring Results, Michael E. Dietz, John C. Clausen, Glenn S. Warner, Karen K. Filchak

Journal of Extension

The project reported in this article evaluated whether stormwater quality could be improved by educating homeowners and implementing best management practices in a suburban neighborhood. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and bacteria levels from two watersheds were compared using the paired watershed approach. Resident surveys, property site assessments, soil tests, and water quality and quantity monitoring were conducted. A x2-analysis of survey data indicated no significant changes in measured behavior. Significant (p=0.01) reductions in NO3-N and fecal coliform bacteria concentrations occurred; however, total nitrogen concentrations did not change significantly.

On Clustering And Retrieval Of Video Shots Through Temporal Slices Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang Dec 2002

On Clustering And Retrieval Of Video Shots Through Temporal Slices Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Based on the analysis of temporal slices, we propose novel approaches for clustering and retrieval of video shots. Temporal slices are a set of two-dimensional (2-D) images extracted along the time dimension of an image volume. They encode rich set of visual patterns for similarity measure. In this paper, we first demonstrate that tensor histogram features extracted from temporal slices are suitable for motion retrieval. Subsequently, we integrate both tensor and color histograms for constructing a two-level hierarchical clustering structure. Each cluster in the top level contains shots with similar color while each cluster in bottom level consists of shots …

Response Surface Methodology Of Die-Sink-Electro-Discharge Machined Surfaces, Bhairav Mehta Dec 2002

Response Surface Methodology Of Die-Sink-Electro-Discharge Machined Surfaces, Bhairav Mehta

Theses

The performance of most manufacturing processes depends on numerous parameters and their interactions. Most of the time, selection of an appropriate set of machining parameters is done based on experience, trial and error or both. Electro-discharge machining (EDM) process is complicated and random in nature. The large number of parameters and the inherent complexity of removal mechanism taking place in EDM make it even more difficult to select machining conditions for optimal performance. The objective of this study is to provide information on the relationships between the key input variables and resultant surface roughness and to develop a response model …

The research was designed as descriptive research correlation which is analyzed by multiple regression and distribution frequency table. The result of the research is being …

Indiana Women And Their Roles In The Works Progress Administration: Familiar Roles, New Opportunities, Tamara S. Ayer Dec 2002

Indiana Women And Their Roles In The Works Progress Administration: Familiar Roles, New Opportunities, Tamara S. Ayer

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For American women, the 1920s were a time of advancement in several areas. They enjoyed a greater role in public life through their involvement in social issues of the day and their fights for the right to vote, and they were seeking and attaining higher education in greater numbers than ever before. Most importantly, though, were the steps American women took toward more representation in the world of work. On the cusp of the Great Depression, more women entered the work force than ever before. They secured jobs in fields traditionally deemed "women's work" such as social workers, teachers, nurses …

Extension's Role In Responding To Community Crisis: Lessons From Klamath Falls, Oregon, Sharon Cartwright, Patricia Case, Tom Gallagher, Ron Hathaway Dec 2002

Extension's Role In Responding To Community Crisis: Lessons From Klamath Falls, Oregon, Sharon Cartwright, Patricia Case, Tom Gallagher, Ron Hathaway

Journal of Extension

Extension has a long history of support for communities, primarily through programs such as agriculture and 4-H. When an entire community faces a crisis, however, the needs of the community can expand beyond the goals of a specific program. In the summer of 2001, Klamath Falls, Oregon experienced a crisis when a federal decision eliminated irrigation water to over 1200 families farming more than 220,000 acres. The Klamath County Extension Office recognized the role they could play and organized and facilitated three countywide meetings to identify needs and strategies for action. The actions that evolved from the meetings were substantial, …

Beyond Knowledge: Guidelines For Effective Health Promotion Messages, Joye C. Gordon Dec 2002

Beyond Knowledge: Guidelines For Effective Health Promotion Messages, Joye C. Gordon

Journal of Extension

Knowledge does not always result in the adoption of recommended behaviors that can prevent or detect illness. This article synthesizes the research of psychologists, health advocates, and other social scientists to identify the factors other than knowledge that influence decisions regarding healthful behaviors. The article also presents guidelines to help Extension personnel optimize messages and programs designed to encourage preventive health behaviors based on findings concerning (a) perceptions of risks; (b) perceptions of self; (c) environmental conditions, both physical and social; and (d) perceptions of costs and benefits of recommended behavior.

Homophobia And Academic Freedom, David Moshman Nov 2002

Homophobia And Academic Freedom, David Moshman

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Addressing homophobia and heterosexism as a teacher raises issues of respect for the intellectual freedom of your students. The central thesis of this article is that these issues are best addressed on the basis of general principles of academic freedom-that is, intellectual freedom in educational and research contexts. Three cases are analyzed on the basis of principles developed by the Academic Freedom Coalition of Nebraska (AFCON). These principles permit advocacy, rather than requiring neutrality, but do not permit indoctrination. That is, instructors may express and justify their own ideas relevant to the curriculum and try to convince students to adopt …

Mechanistic Study Of Oxidation Of Hypophosphite On Pt Electrodes By Sniftirs, Tai-Xiang Jiang, Hui-Huang Wu Nov 2002

Mechanistic Study Of Oxidation Of Hypophosphite On Pt Electrodes By Sniftirs, Tai-Xiang Jiang, Hui-Huang Wu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The oxidation of hypophosphite on a polycrystalline platinum electrode was studied by SNIFTIRS and cyclic voltammetry, the in-situ IR spectra were analyzed as a function of Pt electrode potentials in the solution of 0.5 mol/L H2SO4+0.1 mol/L NaH2PO2. It was found that the dissociative adsorption of hypophosphite ions occurs on Pt surface, and the oxidation product is H3PO4, rather than H2PO3- which was considered to produce on Ni electrodes, thereby a new insight into mechanism of hypophosphite oxidation on Pt in acidic media was …

Flouting The Law: Does Perceived Injustice Provoke General Non-Compliance?, Janice Nadler Nov 2002

Flouting The Law: Does Perceived Injustice Provoke General Non-Compliance?, Janice Nadler

Law and Economics Papers

What happens when people's common sense view of justice diverges from the sense of justice they see enshrined in particular legal rules and legal outcomes? In particular, does the perception of one particular law as unjust make people less likely to comply with unrelated laws? This article reports an experiment that empirically tested the Flouting Thesis - the idea that the perceived justice of one law can influence the intention to comply with unrelated laws. Participants who were exposed to laws they perceived as unjust were more willing, as a general matter, to flout unrelated laws, compared to participants exposed …
