The Development Of Personal, Analogous And Universal Thinking Through In-Role Drama : A Case Study, Sarah Riddoch

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the development of the problem-solving skills of eleven year olds in a Western Australian Primary school when the teacher and the children were in-role within the drama. The teacher, as teacher in-role, and the students role-played a variety of situations in which effective problem-solving skills were used. As the study progressed the nature of the children's use of symbol and metaphor became an important issue. In the first session the teacher in-role as the Mayor of a small town informed the children in-role as the town council that an alien spacecraft …

Determinants Of Corporate Governance Disclosures By Australian Listed Companies Subsequent To The Introduction Of Asx Listing Rule 4.10.3, Lisa M. Cullen Jan 2002

Determinants Of Corporate Governance Disclosures By Australian Listed Companies Subsequent To The Introduction Of Asx Listing Rule 4.10.3, Lisa M. Cullen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study has considered the incentives motivating listed mining and industrial companies to provide governance related disclosures in their annual reports. An examination is made of the impact of listing rule 4.10.3 that was applicable from 30 June 1996. Accordingly the years 1995, 1996 and 1997 are examined. A sample of 100 mining companies and 100 industrial companies was drawn primarily from the Connect 4 database of companies. Adopting political cost theory the study hypothesised that governance disclosures were positively related to the proportion of non-executive directors, gearing, ownership diffusion, Big 6 external auditor and firm size.

Reading Hong Kong Chinese Culture: Hybridity Or Eclecticism, A Matter Of Contemporary Configuration, K. C. Staples Jan 2002

Reading Hong Kong Chinese Culture: Hybridity Or Eclecticism, A Matter Of Contemporary Configuration, K. C. Staples

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis investigates the Cultural Studies paradigm 'hybridity' through an analysis of Hong Kong culture. In Cultural Studies, 'hybridity' is usually applied to cultures that have been influenced by another culture, resulting in a loss of identity, leading to a cultural mixture. As a former Colony comprising predominantly of a southern Chinese population, Hong Kong has been influenced by British culture. However, the question is whether Hong Kong culture has been 'hybridises', or, the Hong Kong people, in mastering two cultures, have become bicultural, and use their biculturalism bilaterally, as particular situations require. The study also researches the condition of …

A Study Of The Experience Of Dramatic Performance For Drama Students, Dale M. Irving Jan 2002

A Study Of The Experience Of Dramatic Performance For Drama Students, Dale M. Irving

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Learning involves cognitive, psychological, sociological, historical, philosophical, aesthetic, emotional and spiritual aspects. This study argues that the spiritual dimension of the psyche is overlooked in the research into education. Spirituality in education is not easily addressed in secular settings and needs exploration and explication. The thesis probes the interstice between the act of dramatic performance and the spiritual awareness of the individual. Case studies allow the exploration of the experience of performance for senior high school drama students, drama teacher trainees and an adult actor. The students attended a school and university in Western Australia. The study posits that in …

A Comparison Of Perceived Social Responsibility Standards With Perceived Social Responsibility Performance In The Australian Banking Industry : A Stakeholder Analysis, William J. Phillips

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this study is to investigate extent to which Australian banking corporations embrace social responsibility. It endeavours to establish the meaning of social responsibility generally and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in particular. In view of the multiple definitions of the concept of ‘social responsibility’ offered by various authors Such.1 Boatright (1993), Freeman (1994), Walters (1977), and Wheeler (1998), the views of power dependent Australian bank stakeholders were solicited to form an operational definition for the study. This created a collective conception of social responsibility as it is applied to Australian banks, allowing corporate social responsibility standards to be …

Intimation Of Life : Photographic Portraiture In Art, Richard Munsie Jan 2002

Intimation Of Life : Photographic Portraiture In Art, Richard Munsie

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Photographic artists have a continuing desire to express intimately aspects of their social world through the genre of portraiture. However, in attempting to make known the lives of those around them, portraitists encounter a range of complexities inherent in the representation of the human subject in a two-dimensional visual field. Portraits were initially an indicator of social class until the introduction of photography, when more and more people became involved in their production and ownership. It was at its inception that the photographic portrait assumed conventions consistent with those of the painted portrait in Western art and its social use. …

Deep Structures Wet Etched Into Lithium Niobate Using A Physical Mask, Andrew Randles Jan 2002

Deep Structures Wet Etched Into Lithium Niobate Using A Physical Mask, Andrew Randles

Theses

The present work is an investigation and characterization of a new technique for etching and masking Lithium niobate (LiNb03) to realize high aspect ratio trenches. LiNb03 is a single crystal optically clear (from 350 nm to 5 micometer wavelength), piezoelectric material. It is also inert to most reactants and has a high curie temperature (the temperature that a material loses its piezoelectric effect). These properties allow LiNb03 to be used as a sensor or actuator in harsh environments. To realize this actuator/sensor a multilevel lithium niobate deep etching technique is currently unavailable. The present work uses a chrome gold mask …

Characterization Of Phosphate Uptake System In Helicobacter Pylori, Gengshi Lu Jan 2002

Characterization Of Phosphate Uptake System In Helicobacter Pylori, Gengshi Lu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Helicobacter pylori is known to be associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. Evidence strongly suggests that more than 50% of the population of the world is colonized by H. pylori with and without disease symptoms. It is now considered one of the most common human pathogens. Phosphate is an essential nutrient for all cells and its availability in the environment varies widely. In H. pylori , phosphate uptake is dependent upon the pH of medium and the rate of uptake is greatly reduced in acidic environments. HP1491 from ATCC 26695 encodes a putative phosphate permease, which has …

Information Technologies For The Healthcare Delivery System, Gary Scialdone Jan 2002

Excuse And Justification In The Law Of Fair Use: Commodification And Market Perspectives, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2002

Excuse And Justification In The Law Of Fair Use: Commodification And Market Perspectives, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

Over twenty years ago, the Journal of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. reprinted my article, "Fair Use as Market Failure" (82 Columbia Law Review 1600 (1982), available at: https://ssrn.com/abstract=3577724. That 1982 piece suggested that an underlying pattern governs the protean forms of "fair use", and I employed the notion of market failure to reveal and explain how the pattern functioned. Since then, some misunderstandings of my argument have arisen.

I am pleased to publish in this, the Fiftieth Anniversary issue of the Journal of the Copyright Society, a clarification – and partial amendment – of my position. As …

Authors, Publishers And Public Goods: Trading Gold For Dross, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2002

Authors, Publishers And Public Goods: Trading Gold For Dross, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The article seeks to clarify what is at stake - and what is not - in the litigation challenging the constitutional validity of the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA). First, the article distinguishes between the CTEA's retrospective term extension of copyright term and the retrospective extensions enacted by prior Congresses. The article suggests that the CTEA provisions are constitutionally questionable in ways that earlier retrospective extensions may not have been. To hold the CTEA unconstitutional would not make all other term extensions vulnerable.

Second, the article shows how non-creative physical activities such as digitization and film preservation have …

Analyzing The Costs/Tradeoffs Involved Between Layer 2, Layer 3, Layer 4 And Layer 5 Switching, Gautam Kapur Jan 2002

Analyzing The Costs/Tradeoffs Involved Between Layer 2, Layer 3, Layer 4 And Layer 5 Switching, Gautam Kapur

Theses

The switching function was primarily entrusted to Layer 2 of the OSI model, i.e. the Data Link Layer. A Layer 2 switch performs forwarding decisions by analyzing the MAC (Media Access Control) address of the destination segment in the frame. The Layer 2 switch checks for the destination address and transmits the packet to the appropriate segment if the address is present in its table of known destinations. If the entry for that address is not present, the switch then forwards the packet to all segments except the one on which it came from. This is known as flooding. When …

Packaging Process: When Should It Occur, Paula Raney Jan 2002

Packaging Process: When Should It Occur, Paula Raney

Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether John Deere's packaging process needed to be streamlined, and whether consideration should be given to engaging the packaging department earlier in the product development process. An IMPACT study produced a flowchart of the current packaging system, which identified gaps in the current packaging process. Evaluation of the IMPACT study isolated the packaging process areas that needed to be modified to create an improved packaging decision process. A survey was then given to several thousand Deere dealers to determine whether Deere's packaging and delivery of service parts was meeting customer expectations. The …

A Case Study On The Design Process For Mobilizing A Web Application, Lynn Bajowski Jan 2002

A Case Study On The Design Process For Mobilizing A Web Application, Lynn Bajowski

Theses

Mobilizing web applications is a current design problem facing software development teams. The majority of projects aimed at developing solutions for mobile devices have been focused on extending the functionality of existing Web applications. The solutions, being developed for personal digital assistants are scaled down versions of the existing Web application. This design solution has proved to be unusable. The usability failures are tied to not having a clear understanding of the user and task requirements. The Web interface seems to be getting in the way of designing an appropriate solution for personal digital assistants. Requirements analysis involves a wide …

Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton Jan 2002

Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton

Theses

The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model was developed to create synthetic images of remotely sensed scenes (Schott et al. 1999). It is a quantitative model based on first principles that calculates the radiance reaching the sensor from the visible region of the spectrum through to the long-wave. DIRSIG generates a very accurate representation of what a sensor would see by modeling all processes involved in the imaging chain. Currently, DIRSIG only models light from passive sources such as the sun, blackbody radiation due to the temperature of an object, and local incoherent illuminants. Active systems allow …

Mediating Preferences: Litigant Preferences For Process And Judicial Preferences For Settlement, Judith Resnik Jan 2002

Mediating Preferences: Litigant Preferences For Process And Judicial Preferences For Settlement, Judith Resnik

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In the 1980s, as a consultant to RAND's Institute for Civil Justice, I joined Deborah Hensler, Allan Lind, Robert MacCoun, William Felstiner, Tom Tyler, and Patricia Ebener in seeking to learn how litigants viewed their experiences with courtbased processes. We surveyed litigants whose cases had been resolved through trials, court-annexed arbitrations, judge-run settlement conferences, and bi-lateral negotiations between lawyers.' We found that litigants cared about process: they reported less satisfaction with processes in which they took no part and more satisfaction with processes in which they could participate. Contrary to some lore that litigants were alienated by trial-like procedures, the …

Trial Rights And Psychotropic Drugs: The Case Against Administering Involuntary Medications To A Defendant During Trial, Dora W. Klein Jan 2002

Trial Rights And Psychotropic Drugs: The Case Against Administering Involuntary Medications To A Defendant During Trial, Dora W. Klein

Vanderbilt Law Review

The right of an accused in a criminal trial to due process is, in essence, the right to a fair opportunity to defend against the State's accusations. Those who have experienced the full thrust of the power of government when leveled against them know that the only protection the citizen has is in the requirement for a fair trial. [I]nvoluntary medication with antipsychotic drugs poses a serious threat to a defendant's right to a fair trial. On July 24, 1998, Russell Weston shot and killed two police officers, and wounded a third, near a security checkpoint in the United States …

Protecting The Endangered Human: Toward An International Treaty Prohibiting Cloning And Inheritable Alterations, George J. Annas, Lori B. Andrews, Rosario M. Isasi

Faculty Scholarship

We humans tend to worry first about our own happiness, then about our families, then about our communities. In times of great stress, such as war or natural disaster, we may focus temporarily on our country but we rarely think about Earth as a whole or the human species as a whole. This narrow perspective, perhaps best exemplified by the American consumer, has led to the environmental degradation of our planet, a grossly widening gap in living standards between rich and poor people and nations and a scientific research agenda that focuses almost exclusively on the needs and desires of …
