Performance Studies On Digital Cellular Radio Systems Operating In A Non-Gaussian Multipath Fading Environment, Chirasil. Chayawan
Performance Studies On Digital Cellular Radio Systems Operating In A Non-Gaussian Multipath Fading Environment, Chirasil. Chayawan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This dissertation is concerned with studies on the performance aspects of digital cellular radio systems operating in non-Gaussian multipath fading environments. The multipath fading channel, modeled as a superposition of sinusoidal random vectors, is the main focus of this work. Elementary phase distributions, which cause quadrature components of the composite received vector to be correlated, are studied and relevant envelope distribution for the resulting non-Gaussian quadrature components is investigated. The Student-t distributed random process is chosen to model the quadrature components in an indoor multipath fading channel when the number of sinusoidal random vectors is small. For the correlated bivariate …
Predicting Decay In Program Modules Of Legacy Software Systems, Dhaval Kunvarabhai Joshi
Predicting Decay In Program Modules Of Legacy Software Systems, Dhaval Kunvarabhai Joshi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Legacy software systems may go through many releases. It is important to ensure that the reliability of a system improves with subsequent releases. Methods are needed to identify decaying software modules, i.e., modules for which quality decreases with each system release. Early identification of such modules during the software life cycle allows us to focus quality improvement efforts in a more productive manner, by reducing resources wasted for testing and improving the entire system. We present a scheme to classify modules in three groups---Decayed, Improved, and Unchanged---based on a three-group software quality classification method. This scheme is applied to three …
Performance Analysis Of Back Propagation Algorithm Using Artificial Neural Networks, Sasikanth. Malladi
Performance Analysis Of Back Propagation Algorithm Using Artificial Neural Networks, Sasikanth. Malladi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Backpropagation is a standard algorithm that is widely employed in many neural networks. Due to its wide acceptance and implementation, a standard benchmark for evaluating the performance of the algorithm is a handy tool for software design and development. The object of this thesis is to propose the use of the classic XOR problem for the performance evaluation of the backpropagation algorithm, with some variations on the input data sets. This thesis covers background work in this area and discusses the results obtained by other researchers. A series of test cases are then developed and run to perform the performance …
Quantitative Methodology And Applications In Measuring Supply Chain Complexity, Courtney Luke Sr Morgan
Quantitative Methodology And Applications In Measuring Supply Chain Complexity, Courtney Luke Sr Morgan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The study of this paper on entropy-based methodology for measuring and analyzing the material and information complexity across organizational interfaces within a logistical framework material and Information flows within the supply chain are often complex. The complexity analysis described in this paper can be used to highlight several issues that are critical to effective supply chain management, and for internal control. My methodology is based on the understanding that the level of control and predictability, as well as the dynamic characteristics and static of the flows contribute to the overall level of complexity within the supply chain. This study demonstrated …
Reliability Analyses And Risk Assessment Techniques In Nonparametric Applications, Robert Thomas Ross
Reliability Analyses And Risk Assessment Techniques In Nonparametric Applications, Robert Thomas Ross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Reliability and risk assessment play an important role in product design, development and production. In mass production items, data is abundant and testing in product development and certification is usually thorough. In contrast, for nonparametric applications, product cost is high, there is limited production and the product is often used only once and discarded. In this type of manufacturing, data is usually limited because of the cost of testing. This makes reliability and risk assessments a difficult task. To circumvent this shortfall in data and its analysis, it is the intent of this paper to provide an alternative approach to …
Relations Of Peer Perceptions To Children's Academic Achievement, Elizabeth A. Ashley
Relations Of Peer Perceptions To Children's Academic Achievement, Elizabeth A. Ashley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Two studies were conducted in which children's (Grades 3--8) perceptions of classmates' academic performance, school affect, and behavioral conduct were examined in relation to achievement outcomes as measured by standardized achievement test scores in language, mathematics, and science, and school grades in English, mathematics, and science. Study 1 was a longitudinal design and the main research question addressed was whether the way a child's peers perceive him or her with respect to school characteristics would be related to children's academic outcomes concurrently, and one year later. Support was found for several hypotheses advanced. Peers' perceptions were related to children's concurrent …
Significance Of The Space Between: A Consideration Of Liminality, Meditation, And Modernity In Selected Poems By Wallace Stevens And Charles Baudelaire, Charles S. Wonn
Significance Of The Space Between: A Consideration Of Liminality, Meditation, And Modernity In Selected Poems By Wallace Stevens And Charles Baudelaire, Charles S. Wonn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The state of liminality, as defined by Mihai Spariosu and exemplified by Wallace Stevens and Charles Baudelaire, is a significant one, transitional in its "structure," and one in which a vital activity takes place. Namely, this activity is the moving between worlds, states, or perceptions, and the choice of new ones, or of considering new potentialities. Essentially, this idea of being in limbo and the result of this state of "in-betweenness" is that we emerge from a relatively indeterminate, contemplative, and subjective space with an ultimate satisfaction or heightened or altered awareness. Much of Stevens's poetry, especially his later poetry, …

Analyzing Connectivity Patterns And Their Application To Genetic Networks, Lina A. Shehadeh
Analyzing Connectivity Patterns And Their Application To Genetic Networks, Lina A. Shehadeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The connectivity underlying a complex system determines its global dynamics and its observable functional patterns. Examples are found in a variety of disciplines such as social networks, the Internet, the central nervous system including the cortex, as well as electronic circuits. Novel computational methods from fractal mathematics and "small world" networks provide an entry point to the understanding of the connectiyity and the interaction of its microscopic components from the study of the observable variables on the macroscopic system level. As an example of such an approach, we try to understand the underlying connectivity of the genome by analyzing the …

Since the passage of Public Law 94-142 (The Education of All Handicapped Children Act) which is currently called the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), there has been a movement to service students with disabilities in more inclusive environments. The Broward County School District had been involved in the State of Florida's effort to reform the special education funding model and the delivery of services to students in more inclusive environments since 1994. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of three delivery models, resource room, co-teaching, and support facilitation, on the reading and math achievement of students …
Attitudes As Attractors: Toward Dynamical Systems Of Beliefs And Values, Hiroaki Morio
Attitudes As Attractors: Toward Dynamical Systems Of Beliefs And Values, Hiroaki Morio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study assessed whether dynamical properties of attitudes can be used to predict attitude change. In social psychology, attitudes have been defined as dispositions that are stable over time but also as mental states that are malleable in response to external influences. To solve this paradox, I proposed that attitudes should be conceptualized as fixed-point attractors for momentary evaluations that fluctuate over time. In dynamical systems, an attractor corresponds to a stable equilibrium toward which a system evolves. This conceptualization allows us to distinguish attitudes that are rather stable in a short time frame from momentary evaluations that fluctuate over …
Applications Of Fractals And Scaling In Population And Settlement Analysis, Roger Curtis Sambrook
Applications Of Fractals And Scaling In Population And Settlement Analysis, Roger Curtis Sambrook
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Patterns of settlement are examined using a number of fractal and scaling techniques. Existing methods of spatial analysis are reviewed and evaluated, showing a need for additional methods for the analysis of spatial and geographical data. Fractal methods are introduced as candidates for such uses. They are applied in a variety of ways to analyze patterns of population and settlement: in an exploratory fashion, to test hypotheses, to determine correlations, to validate settlement models, and to explore the dynamics of population. Scaling properties of population and settlement patterns averaged over different regions are found to be non-uniform, allowing comparisons to …
Brief History Of Project Orion, Reuben David Ferguson
Brief History Of Project Orion, Reuben David Ferguson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A Brief History of Project Orion describes the research and development of an interplanetary spacecraft which was to use atomic bombs as its propulsive force. Initiated in the late 1950s, the project involved some of the most brilliant scientists of the time. The concept of using atomic detonations for spacecraft propulsion was extremely attractive because of the vastly greater energy available as opposed to conventional chemical propellants; atomics produce in the range of one million times as much energy as chemicals. The project was headed by Theodore Taylor (later by Frederick de Hoffman) and included Freeman Dyson as a theoretical …

Classification Of Software Quality Using Bayesian Belief Networks, Yuhong. Dong
Classification Of Software Quality Using Bayesian Belief Networks, Yuhong. Dong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In today's competitive environment for software products, quality has become an increasingly important asset to software development organizations. Software quality models are tools for focusing efforts to find faults early in the development. Delaying corrections can lead to higher costs. In this research, the classification Bayesian Networks modelling technique was used to predict the software quality by classifying program modules either as fault-prone or not fault-prone. A general classification rule was applied to yield classification Bayesian Belief Network models. Six classification Bayesian Belief Network models were developed based on quality metrics data records of two very large window application systems. …

Comparison Of Statistical Tests For Crossover Designs, Susan Moosai-Sitahal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In this thesis a comparative study of treatment and carryover effects is performed for five statistical tests as they apply to a three treatment, three period crossover design. These tests are two likelihood based tests, namely, Ordinary Least Squares and Modified F-Test Approximation; two non parametric tests, the one of Bellavance and Tardif (1995) and the other of Ohrvik (1998); and The Generalized Estimating Equations test. This crossover design consists of six possible treatment sequences, (123, 132, 213, 231, 312 and 321) made up of three treatments, say 1, 2 and 3, being assigned to six subjects per group, for …
Deterministic And Non-Deterministic Basis Reduction Techniques For Ntru Lattices, Daniel Socek
Deterministic And Non-Deterministic Basis Reduction Techniques For Ntru Lattices, Daniel Socek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Finding the shortest or a "short enough" vector in an integral lattice of substantial dimension is a difficult problem. The problem is not known to be but most people believe it is [7]. The security of the newly proposed NTRU cryptosystem depends solely on this fact. However, by the definition NTRU lattices possess a certain symmetry. This suggests that there may be a way of taking advantage of this symmetry to enable a new cryptanalytical approach in combination with existing good lattice reduction algorithms. The aim of this work is to exploit the symmetry inherent in NTRU lattices to design …

Design Of An Adaptive Nonlinear Controller For An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Equipped With A Vectored Thruster, Yannick. Morel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The tasks Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are expected to perform are becoming more and more challenging. Thus, to be able to address such tasks, we implemented a high maneuverability propulsion system: a vectored thruster. The design of a vehicle equipped with such a propulsion system will be presented, from a mechanical, electronic and software point of view. The motion control of the resulting system is fairly complex, and no suitable controller is available in the literature. Accordingly, we will present the derivation of a novel tracking controller, whose adaptive properties will compensate for the lack of knowledge of the system's …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
An integrated coastal ocean and acoustic propagation model has been implemented to determine the effects of the ocean variations on the acoustic propagation field applied specifically to SFOMC. The ocean dynamics were modeled using the sigma coordinate, orthogonal curvilinear grid, Princeton Ocean Model. By using forcing conditions of tide, river runoff, wind and realistic bottom topography, the resulting time variant regional sound velocity outputs from the model were used as inputs to the range dependent, parabolic equation, acoustic propagation model, RAM. The results show that the fluctuations in the ocean result in scintillation in the acoustic propagation field, and for …
Dsp Implementation Of Turbo Decoder Using The Modified-Log-Map Algorithm, Zeeshan Haneef Khan
Dsp Implementation Of Turbo Decoder Using The Modified-Log-Map Algorithm, Zeeshan Haneef Khan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The design of any communication receiver needs to addresses the issues of operating under the lowest possible signal-to-noise ratio. Among various algorithms that facilitate this objective are those used for iterative decoding of two-dimensional systematic convolutional codes in applications such as spread spectrum communications and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) detection. A main theme of any decoding schemes is to approach the Shannon limit in signal-to-noise ratio. All these decoding algorithms have various complexity levels and processing delay issues. Hence, the optimality depends on how they are used in the system. The technique used in various decoding algorithms is termed …

Development Of An Efficient General Purpose Cable Model And Simulation For Marine Applications, Branka. Radanovic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This work develops, a general numerical model and efficient integration routine to calculate the response of the underwater cable that connects the Lockheed Martin remote minehunting vehicle to its variable depth sensor. The general model is developed from continuous cable equations that are discretized using a finite element method with linear elements. The resulting discrete system of equations is nonlinear and stiff. Thus, we chose the implicit Generalized-alpha method to integrate these equations because it possess numerical dissipation. This integration routine is coded into a C++ based numerical simulation and the results and efficiency were compared with the results and …
Dynamics In The Stream Of Self-Reflection, Christopher Thomas Buchholz
Dynamics In The Stream Of Self-Reflection, Christopher Thomas Buchholz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This work argues that the self can be viewed as a dynamical system, with lower-level cognitive and affective elements that interact over time giving rise to global patterns of thought and behavior. The underlying structural features of the self-system promote temporal variation in self-evaluation in the stream of thought. To capture the dynamics of self-evaluation, a refinement of the "mouse paradigm" is employed. This procedure assesses the stream of self-evaluative thought and thus provides insight into the global structural features of the self. The goals of this research were to establish the validity of the "mouse paradigm" and to explore …

Examination Of Required Technology Course Syllabi In Elementary Teacher Preparation Programs, Linda Mae Goudy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Computer literacy is analogous to reading literacy---without it, failure is nearly assured. The inexorable conclusion from many is that technology integration in the elementary setting must begin with the training of the teachers. The study of how that transference is inculcated into the teachers of tomorrow was the thrust of this study. This study was designed to examine syllabi from the 55 top-rated colleges and universities (as identified by US News and World Report) to identify how, and what, the "best" colleges of education were teaching in the required technology courses offered in their undergraduate Elementary Teacher Preparation programs. Twenty-four …
