Effects Of Theoretically Distinct Mathematics Interventions On Student Performance And Treatment Acceptability, Christopher Todd Arra Jan 2002

Effects Of Theoretically Distinct Mathematics Interventions On Student Performance And Treatment Acceptability, Christopher Todd Arra

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student mathematics achievement and teacher and student acceptability of academic interventions are important factors in determining the usage and effectiveness of academic interventions. The present study compared the effectiveness and acceptability of theoretically distinct mathematics interventions. The study lasted eight weeks. Eighteen teacher-candidates and 54 fourth grade students were exposed to one of three mathematical interventions. Teacher-candidates and students were asked to rate the acceptability of each intervention. A pretest-posttest analysis of students' mathematics achievement was also conducted. Results showed that both teacher-candidates and students preferred all interventions equally and that mathematics achievement did not significantly increase from pre- to …

Design And Analysis Of Optical Layouts For Free Space Optical Switching, Kung-Meng Lo Jan 2002

Design And Analysis Of Optical Layouts For Free Space Optical Switching, Kung-Meng Lo

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Intelligent Reconfigurable Optical Switch (IROS) is an N x N optical switch that uses two reflective Liquid Crystal (LC) Spatial Light Modulators (SLM} in a "Z" configuration to steer the incoming beams from the input ports to the designated output ports. Currently, the maximum steering capacity of practical SLM is limited to few degrees. For a dense optical switch, this makes the optical path between the input and output fiber ports relatively long. When a Gaussian beam is switched from an input fiber port to an output fiber port in a long free space interconnection topology, the beam's illumination …

An Investigation Into The Validity Of The Intra-Continental And Intercontinental Casselian Hypothesis (Ppp) And Uncovered Interest Rate Parity (Uip) In Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Countries A Long Run Structural Modelling Approach, Fidelia M. Gandiya

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The current high exchange rate volatility in the face of globalization, underpinned by growing trade and financial and commodity markets liberalization has attracted the resurgence of considerable interest from both financial economists and policy makers, into the validity of international parity relationships. Using multivariate cointegration framework and long run structural modelling, this paper investigates the evidence in support of two of the parity relationships that underpin either implicitly or explicitly much of international macroeconomics. The first is the purchasing power parity (PPP) hypothesis or the theorem that there exists an invariable long-run equilibrium real exchange rate. The second is the …

Factors Affecting The Bit Error Rate Performance Of The Indoor Radio Propagation Channel For 2.3-2.5 Ghz Frequency Band, Edward A. Walker Jan 2002

Factors Affecting The Bit Error Rate Performance Of The Indoor Radio Propagation Channel For 2.3-2.5 Ghz Frequency Band, Edward A. Walker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The use of wireless in buildings based on microwave radio technology has recently become a viable alternative to the traditional wired transmission media. Because of the portable nature of radio transceivers, the need for extensive cabling of buildings with either twisted pair, coaxial, or optical fibre cable is eliminated. This is particularly desirable where high user mobility occurs and existing wiring is not in place, or buildings are heritage in nature and extensive cabling is seen as intrusive. Economic analysis bas also shown that significant labour cost savings can result by using a radio system or a hybrid mix of …

Drama Teaching: Understanding What We Do, Valerie Johnson Jan 2002

Drama Teaching: Understanding What We Do, Valerie Johnson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Drama teaching in secondary schools in Western Australia has become an increasingly complex discipline in recent years. This study has considered the work of Drama teachers from the point of view of those practising the discipline, using a phenomenological methodology which allowed the voices of the participants to be heard directly. In the discussion, consideration is given to the way in which these teachers practice the dynamic which is drama, are influenced by the art form of theatre, and deliver the school subject, Drama.

Religious Education: Outcomes-Based Integration Across The Primary Curriculum, Paul Longobardi Jan 2002

Religious Education: Outcomes-Based Integration Across The Primary Curriculum, Paul Longobardi

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study shows that the integrity of curriculum in Catholic Schools can be demonstrated through an integrated curriculum, with Religious Education (R.E.) as the primary focus, centre point and generator of learning experiences across all subjects or Key Learning Areas (K.L.As). The contemporary, Catholic nature of curriculum is able to be developed via an outcomes-based approach that integrates R.E. with other Key Learning Areas. The "Integrated Religious Education Outcomes Approach" represents a personal belief of the author, developed as a classroom teacher in five Catholic schools and a member of three schools' Executive. The response to this belief is the …

As the study progressed the nature of the children's use of symbol and metaphor became an important issue. In the first session the teacher in-role as the Mayor of a small town informed the children in-role as the town council that an alien spacecraft …

Modulation Classification Of Digital Communication Signals, Visalakshi S. Ramakonar Jan 2002

Modulation Classification Of Digital Communication Signals, Visalakshi S. Ramakonar

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Modulation classification of digital communications signals plays an important role in both military and civilian sectors. It has the potential of replacing several receivers with one universal receiver. An automatic modulation classifier can be defined as a system that automatically identifies the modulation type of the received signal given that the signal exists and its parameters lie in a known range. This thesis addresses the need for a universal modulation classifier capable of classifying a comprehensive list of digital modulation schemes. Two classification approaches are presented: a decision-theoretic (DT) approach and a neural network (NN) approach. First classifiers are introduced …

Conceptual-Associative System In Aboriginal English : A Study Of Aboriginal Children Attending Primary Schools In Metropolitan Perth, Farzad Sharifian Jan 2002

Conceptual-Associative System In Aboriginal English : A Study Of Aboriginal Children Attending Primary Schools In Metropolitan Perth, Farzad Sharifian

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

National measures of achievement among Australian school children suggest that Aboriginal students, considered as a group, are those most likely to end their schooling without achieving minimal acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy. In view of the fact that many Aboriginal students dwell in metropolitan areas and speak English as a first language, many educators have been unconvinced that linguistic and cultural difference have been significant factors in this underachievement. This study explores the possibility that, despite intensive exposure to non-Aboriginal society, Aboriginal students in metropolitan Perth may maintain, through a distinctive variety of English, distinctive conceptualisation which may help …

Finding The True Performance Of Australian Managed Funds, Victor Soucik Jan 2002

Finding The True Performance Of Australian Managed Funds, Victor Soucik

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

When making conclusions about the performance of managed funds, it is critical that the framework in which such performance is measured provides an accurate and unbiased environment. In this thesis I search for true performance of the two major classes of funds- equity as well as fixed interest managed funds. Focusing, first on the former class, I examine five measurement models across three risk-free proxies, nine benchmarks proposed by the extant literature (covering conditional and unconditional as well as single and multi factor definitions) and over three independent periods in an effort to identity (in a consistent setting) the most …

The Computation Choices Made By Students In Years 5 To 7, Paul Swan Jan 2002

The Computation Choices Made By Students In Years 5 To 7, Paul Swan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study was designed to explore the computation choices made by 78 students in Years 5 to 7. The ability to choose and use a repertoire of computation methods is an important goal of mathematics education. While one might expect to find a great deal of research outlining the computation choices students make and why they make them, this was not the case; and as such it was decided to explore what computation choices students make and why they make them.

Students' Needs And Attitudes: Efl Education In Japanese High Schools, Michelle Perche Jan 2002

Students' Needs And Attitudes: Efl Education In Japanese High Schools, Michelle Perche

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Much of the literature on EFL education in Japan describes a system that is fraught with problems. Over the last decade the Japanese Education Ministry (Monbusho) has introduced a number of reforms and introduced some new EFL courses into Japanese schools. The stated aim of the new courses has been to focus on the development of students' communicative abilities in English. However, the effectiveness of these reforms has been questioned particularly at the senior high school level. According to a number of commentators, difficulties occur because of a back wash effect of the university entrance examinations. Others criticise the teachers …

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen Jan 2002

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen

Dissertations and Theses

Several chemical and radiological contaminants are present in an unconfined aquifer underlying the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in southeast Washington State. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], previously used as an anticorrosive in plutonium production reactors on the shoreline of the Columbia River, is of particular concern because of its conservative nature, toxicity to humans and aquatic life, and proximity to protected salmon spawning habitat. Hydrogeologic data are abundant from the unconfined aquifer, but are lacking from the hyporheic zone through which Cr(VI) is transported into the river. A hydrogeologic study was conducted near one known Cr(VI) plume to determine the …

Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton Jan 2002

Elastic Ladar Modeling For Synthetic Imaging Applications, Robin Burton

Theses

The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model was developed to create synthetic images of remotely sensed scenes (Schott et al. 1999). It is a quantitative model based on first principles that calculates the radiance reaching the sensor from the visible region of the spectrum through to the long-wave. DIRSIG generates a very accurate representation of what a sensor would see by modeling all processes involved in the imaging chain. Currently, DIRSIG only models light from passive sources such as the sun, blackbody radiation due to the temperature of an object, and local incoherent illuminants. Active systems allow …

Lawyer-Negotiator As Mood Scientist: What We Know And Don't Know About How Mood Relates To Successful Negotiation, The, Clark Freshman, Adele Hayes, Greg Feldman Jan 2002

Lawyer-Negotiator As Mood Scientist: What We Know And Don't Know About How Mood Relates To Successful Negotiation, The, Clark Freshman, Adele Hayes, Greg Feldman

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This article explores two related questions: First, does mood7 shape how well lawyers succeed at negotiation?" Second, can lawyers succeed better at negotiation by understanding and managing the role of mood? We begin by exploring what scientific evidence we currently have about how mild changes in mood are associated with significant differences in success at negotiation. Ultimately, we argue that existing scientific evidence shows mood plays a far more complicated role than negotiators and negotiation scholars usually imagine, but that further research needs to address more carefully exactly how mood works and how it affects lawyers and legal negotiation. We …

Business Method Patents And Patent Floods, Michael J. Meurer Jan 2002

Business Method Patents And Patent Floods, Michael J. Meurer

Faculty Scholarship

Technological breakthroughs occasionally set off floods of inventions and associated patents. The decline of the business method exception to patentability is likely to increase the frequency of patent floods. Future technological breakthroughs might now cause two different patent floods: a flood of patents covering the relevant technology, and a flood of patents covering business methods in the new market opened by the breakthrough. Furthermore, a technological breakthrough is no longer a precondition for a patent flood. Any factor that opens a new market might cause a future flood of business method patents.

A flood of related patents in a new …

System And Lifeworld In Habermas's Theory Of Law, Hugh Baxter Jan 2002

System And Lifeworld In Habermas's Theory Of Law, Hugh Baxter

Faculty Scholarship

Jürgen Habermas's recent work on law and democracy divides into two parts. With his "discourse theory of law and democracy," Habermas seeks to explain the conditions under which modern constitutional legal and political orders may claim legitimacy. Here Habermas's method is primarily philosophical and legal-theoretical. The second part of the project – the part on which this article focuses – develops what Habermas calls his "communication theory of society." Here Habermas seeks to "translate" the normative conclusions of his discourse theory into a substantive social-theoretical model. The idea is to determine whether the ambitious normative theory of democracy is plausible …

Mitigation Strategies For The Removal Of Rinsate Organics And Lithium-Based Dyes From Textile Effluents, Kathryn W. Huddle Jan 2002

Mitigation Strategies For The Removal Of Rinsate Organics And Lithium-Based Dyes From Textile Effluents, Kathryn W. Huddle

LSU Master's Theses

Governmental agencies have set regulatory values on the concentration of dye-related color that can be released in textile mill effluents. A proprietary biotic and abiotic technology treatment train was built at a candidate facility in northwestern Georgia to reduce the organic content and dye-related color content in the textile mill’s effluent. Laboratory experimentation began with bench scale 4 L immobilized microbe (IMBR) bioreactor tests to biologically treat primary wastewater streams, namely skein dye and space dye, from this candidate facility. The biological treatment reduced the organic content levels, expressed as chemical oxygen demand (COD), from 3185±30 to 290±20 mg/L (COD …

Prediction Of Transient Head On Seepage Path Using Boundary Fitted Coordinate (Bfc) System, Sherly Hartono Jan 2002

Prediction Of Transient Head On Seepage Path Using Boundary Fitted Coordinate (Bfc) System, Sherly Hartono

LSU Master's Theses

One of the main causes of levee failure is seepage through levee. This seepage can cause weakening in the levee structure, which in turn can cause sudden levee failure or overtopping of the levee due to levee depression. The purpose of this study is to determine the transient head on the seepage path due to changing water level during flood period. Transient seepage problems are very important as critical condition can occur during this time rather than during steady state condition. Seepage path through a levee can be predicted using the Boundary Fitted Coordinate (BFC) system method. The physical coordinate …

Feeding Habits Of Blacktip Sharks, Carcharhinus Limbatus, And Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks, Rhizoprionodon Terraenovae, In Louisiana Coastal Waters, Kevin Patrick Barry

LSU Master's Theses

Little is known regarding the feeding behavior of many shark species. Even less is known about shark feeding habits in Louisiana coastal waters. The stomach contents of gillnet-captured blacktip sharks (n=356), Carcharhinus limbatus, and Atlantic sharpnose sharks (n=55), Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, were examined in this study. Roughly half of the blacktip stomachs (52%) and sharpnose stomachs (45%) contained prey items. The primary prey item in terms of percent number, occurrence, and weight for blacktips and sharpnose was the gulf menhaden, Brevoortia patronus. Both blacktips and sharpnose appear to mainly be piscivores; however, no members of Sciaenidae, the most common family of …

The Parallel Projection, As Flights Of Fancy, Mary Nixon Jan 2002

The Parallel Projection, As Flights Of Fancy, Mary Nixon

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

For a student of architecture, developing imaginative points-of-view and drawing acumen, is a must. The parallel projection is one such drawing type that aptly addresses point-of-view. Its three-dimensional properties and simple methodology make it a standard of beginning designers. Its inclination toward aerial adventures is an especially important feature to understanding its use. This paper examines the long history and sometimes-parallel track to architecture the parallel projection has enjoyed.
