Packing Cycles In Graphs, Guoli Ding, Wenan Zang Jan 2002

Packing Cycles In Graphs, Guoli Ding, Wenan Zang

Faculty Publications

A graph G is called cycle Mengerian (CM) if for all nonnegative integral function w defined on V(G), the maximum number of cycles (repetition is allowed) in G such that each vertex v is used at most w(v) times is equal to the minimum of ∑ {w(x) : x ∈ X}, where the minimum is taken over all X ⊆ V(G) such that deleting X from G results in a forest. The purpose of this paper is to characterize all CM graphs in terms of forbidden structures. As a corollary, we prove that if the fractional version of the above …

On Matroids Of Branch-Width Three, Rhiannon Hall, James Oxley, Charles Semple, Geoff Whittle Jan 2002

On Matroids Of Branch-Width Three, Rhiannon Hall, James Oxley, Charles Semple, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

For all positive integers k, the class Bk of matroids of branch-width at most k is minor-closed. When k is 1 or 2, the class Bk is, respectively, the class of direct sums of loops and coloops, and the class of direct sums of series-parallel networks. B3 is a much richer class as it contains infinite antichains of matroids and is thus not well-quasi-ordered under the minor order. In this paper, it is shown that, like B1 and B2, the class B3 can be characterized by a finite list of excluded minors. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

Totally Free Expansions Of Matroids, James Geelen, James Oxley, Dirk Vertigan, Geoff Whittle Jan 2002

Totally Free Expansions Of Matroids, James Geelen, James Oxley, Dirk Vertigan, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to give insight into the behaviour of inequivalent representations of 3-connected matroids. An element x of a matroid M is fixed if there is no extension M′ of M by an element x′ such that {x, x′} is independent and M′ is unaltered by swapping the labels on x and x′. When x is fixed, a representation of M.\x extends in at most one way to a representation of M. A 3-connected matroid N is totally free if neither N nor its dual has a fixed element whose deletion is a series extension of …

Mixed-Mode Shell-Model Theory For Nuclear Structure Studies, V. G. Gueorguiev, W. E. Ormand, C. W. Johnson, J. P. Draayer Jan 2002

Mixed-Mode Shell-Model Theory For Nuclear Structure Studies, V. G. Gueorguiev, W. E. Ormand, C. W. Johnson, J. P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

We introduce a shell-model theory that combines traditional spherical states, which yield a diagonal representation of the usual single-particle interaction, with collective configurations that track deformations, and test the validity of this mixed-mode, oblique-basis shell-model scheme on [Formula Presented] The correct binding energy (within 2% of the full-space result) as well as low-energy configurations that have greater than 90% overlap with full-space results are obtained in a space that spans less than 10% of the full space. The results suggest that a mixed-mode shell-model theory may be useful in situations where competing degrees of freedom dominate the dynamics and full-space …

Hyperbolicity Of The Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura System Of Einstein Evolution Equations, Olivier Sarbach, Gioel Calabrese, Jorge Pullin, Manuel Tiglio Jan 2002

Hyperbolicity Of The Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura System Of Einstein Evolution Equations, Olivier Sarbach, Gioel Calabrese, Jorge Pullin, Manuel Tiglio

Faculty Publications

We discuss an equivalence between the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura (BSSN) formulation of the Einstein evolution equations, a subfamily of the Kidder-Scheel-Teukolsky formulation, and other strongly or symmetric hyperbolic first order systems with fixed shift and densitized lapse. This allows us to show under which conditions the BSSN system is, in a sense to be discussed, hyperbolic. This desirable property may account in part for the empirically observed better behavior of the BSSN formulation in numerical evolutions involving black holes. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Finite Spin-Foam-Based Theory Of Three- And Four-Dimensional Quantum Gravity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Jan 2002

Finite Spin-Foam-Based Theory Of Three- And Four-Dimensional Quantum Gravity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

Starting from Ooguri's construction for BF theory in three (and four) dimensions, we show how to construct a well defined theory with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. The spin network states that are kept invariant by the evolution operators of the theory are exact solutions of the Hamiltonian constraint of quantum gravity proposed by Thiemann. The resulting theory is the first example of a well defined, finite, consistent, spin-foam-based theory in a situation with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. Since it solves the quantum constraints of general relativity it is also a candidate for a theory …

Close Limit Evolution Of Kerr-Schild Type Initial Data For Binary Black Holes, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio, Jorge Pullin Jan 2002

Close Limit Evolution Of Kerr-Schild Type Initial Data For Binary Black Holes, Olivier Sarbach, Manuel Tiglio, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We eyolve the binary black hole initial data family proposed by Bishop et al. in the limit in which the black holes are close to each other. We present an exact solution of the linearized initial value problem based on their proposal and make use of a recently introduced generalized formalism for studying perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes in arbitrary coordinates to perform the evolution. We clarify the meaning of the free parameters of the initial data family through the results for the radiated energy and waveforms from the black hole collision. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

Battlefield Oddities: Explaining Two Minié Balls From Pea Ridge National Military Park, Don Arp Jr. Jan 2002

Battlefield Oddities: Explaining Two Minié Balls From Pea Ridge National Military Park, Don Arp Jr.

Nebraska Anthropologist

Two minié ball bullets, each with a different caliber and similar longitudinal lines were recovered at Pea Ridge National Military Park during the fieldwork conducted there in March 2001. Thefunction of these lines was unknown. Several hypotheses were advanced to explain the Irfarkings. However, through detailed mathematic and microscope analysis, it has been determined that the lines were made by the same process and machine and may have served as a point of attachment for an experimental cartridge made of either metal, cloth, or paper. The bullets may have been part of a pre-Civil War experiment and found action in …

Use Of High Pressure Liquid Chromatography To Detect And Quantify Oxytetracycline Marks In Walleye Otoliths And Dorsal Spines, Michael J. Hawkins Jan 2002

Use Of High Pressure Liquid Chromatography To Detect And Quantify Oxytetracycline Marks In Walleye Otoliths And Dorsal Spines, Michael J. Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oxytetracycline (OTC) is used to chemically mark calcified structures in walleye Stizostedion vitreum fry and fingerlings. Current visual methods for detection of these marks are subjective, and biologists are unable to quantify the amount of OTC in a sample. The goal of this study was to determine if high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a feasible and superior alternative for detecting and quantifying OTC in otoliths of fry-marked and spines of fingerlingmarked walleyes. Study objectives were to validate methodology of extraction of OTC from calcified tissue, detect and quantify extracted OTC using HPLC, and determine a cost comparison of current …

Storm Clouds On The Horizon Of Darwinism: Teaching The Anthropic Principle And Intelligent Design In The Public Schools, Jeffrey F. Addicott Jan 2002

Storm Clouds On The Horizon Of Darwinism: Teaching The Anthropic Principle And Intelligent Design In The Public Schools, Jeffrey F. Addicott

Faculty Articles

Professor Addicott’s article addresses the future legal ramifications that the fledgling intelligent design movement and the scientific concept known as the Anthropic Principle will have on the teaching of Darwinian evolution in public schools. Both ideas are associated with the concept that an “unnamed” intelligent designer is responsible for the creation and sustainment of life. Predicting that the Supreme Court will ultimately allow, for instance, school boards to incorporate intelligent design in the science curriculum, he believes neither of the two ideas violate the Establishment Clause and cannot be “dismissed as yet another back door attempt by creationists to get …

Cooling Atoms In An Optical Trap By Selective Parametric Excitation, Nicola Poli, Robert J. Brecha, Giacomo Roati, Giovanni Modugno Jan 2002

Cooling Atoms In An Optical Trap By Selective Parametric Excitation, Nicola Poli, Robert J. Brecha, Giacomo Roati, Giovanni Modugno

Physics Faculty Publications

We demonstrate the possibility of energy-selective removal of cold atoms from a tight optical trap by means of parametric excitation of the trap vibrational modes. Taking advantage of the anharmonicity of the trap potential, we either selectively remove the most energetic trapped atoms or excite those at the bottom of the trap by tuning the parametric modulation frequency. This process, which had been previously identified as a possible source of heating, also appears to be a robust way for forcing evaporative cooling in anharmonic traps.

Site Index Conversion Equations For Mixed Trembling Aspen And White Spruce Stands In Northern British Columbia, Gordon Nigh Jan 2002

Site Index Conversion Equations For Mixed Trembling Aspen And White Spruce Stands In Northern British Columbia, Gordon Nigh

Aspen Bibliography

White spruce and trembling aspen are two important commercial species in British Columbia. They often grow in association, particularly in the Boreal White and Black Spruce and Sub-Boreal Spruce biogeoclimatic zones. Site index conversion equations are useful for estimating the site index of one species from the site index of another species. This study fills a need for site index conversion equations for mixed spruce/aspen stands. Seventy 0.01 ha study plots were established in mixed spruce/aspen stands. One site tree of each species was selected from each plot. The height and breast height ages of the site trees were measured …

Pricing And Product Mix Optimization In Freight Transportation, Michael F. Gorman Jan 2002

Pricing And Product Mix Optimization In Freight Transportation, Michael F. Gorman

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

We propose improved pricing and market mix can improve the profitability of the freight transportation provider through the reduction of equipment repositioning costs. We hypothesize that because of complexities surrounding pricing and equipment repositioning costing, existing pricing strategies in freight transportation fail to fully consider these costs. We test this hypothesis in an applied setting in which Monte Carlo simulation captures the stochasticity of market conditions inherent in the problem. We use a heuristic to improve the nondifferentiable, discontinuous objective function.

Our results from test cases show with high confidence that current prices are not optimal, as indicated by a …

A Refreshing Jury Cola: Fulfilling The Duty To Compensate Jurors Adequately, Evan R. Seamone Jan 2002

A Refreshing Jury Cola: Fulfilling The Duty To Compensate Jurors Adequately, Evan R. Seamone

Journal Articles

This Article adopts a new perspective on the obligation of states to compensate jurors on the basis of their financial needs. It combs the nation’s history for answers to a variety of significant questions: Why do states compensate jurors? Have there ever been minimal levels of juror compensation among the states of the union? Have any legal challenges resulted in governments raising jury fees? Have states developed uniform standards for juror compensation in light of varied economic conditions? While, at times, the responses to these questions will be brief, answering them is crucial to understanding how jury fees can be …

Note, When Wishing On A Star Just Won’T Do: The Legal Basis For International Cooperation In The Mitigation Of Asteroid Impacts And Similar Transboundary Disasters, Evan R. Seamone

Journal Articles

This Note uses the threat of collisions of large space bodies with the Earth as a vehicle to investigate the legal duties of nations to participate in collective efforts at megadisaster mitigation. Asteroids and comets are space bodies while meteors occupy a less-threatening category. Although they differ in chemical composition and in visibility to the naked eye, large space bodies can endanger multiple nations simultaneously. Space bodies are ideal topics of investigation because the magnitude of the threats they pose is inestimable. Legal obligations to mitigate Earth impacts apply equally well to other infrequent threats that are currently of the …

Heat Transfer In A Thin Liquid Film In The Presence Of Electric Field For Non-Isothermal Interfacial Condition, Rama S.R. Gorla, Jorge E. Gatica, Bahman Ghorashi, Pijarn In-Eure, Larry W. Byrd Jan 2002

Heat Transfer In A Thin Liquid Film In The Presence Of Electric Field For Non-Isothermal Interfacial Condition, Rama S.R. Gorla, Jorge E. Gatica, Bahman Ghorashi, Pijarn In-Eure, Larry W. Byrd

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Heat transfer enhancement in an evaporating thin liquid film using the electric field under non-isothermal interfacial condition is presented. A new mathematical model subjected to van der Waals attractive forces, the capillary pressure and the electric field is developed to describe the heat transfer enhancement in the evaporating thin liquid film. The effect of an electrostatic field on the curvature of the thin film, evaporative flux, pressure gradient distribution, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficient in the thin film is presented. The results show that the electric field can enhance heat transfer in the thin liquid film significantly. In addition, …

A Developmental Approach To Intelligence, Doug Blank, Deepak Kumar, Lisa Meeden Jan 2002

A Developmental Approach To Intelligence, Doug Blank, Deepak Kumar, Lisa Meeden

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this paper we present a developmental approach to- ward creating intelligent systems. Although embracing an emergent paradigm, we also propose an architecture such that symbols have their proper place. To explore this methodology, we are developing our system on real robots. Robotic approaches usually invoke the so-called “symbol grounding problem” (Harnad 1990). However, our developmental approach bypasses the problem by generating the symbols. Thus, in a sense, the symbols are inherently grounded to the physical objects they des- ignate. We argue that a general theory of intelligence that takes a top-down perspective will be inherently in- complete.
