Perceptions Of African American Students Regarding Cultural Diversity At Andrews University., Cheryl Eileen Roberts Saunders Jan 2002

Perceptions Of African American Students Regarding Cultural Diversity At Andrews University., Cheryl Eileen Roberts Saunders

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose o f this study was to examine issues related to cultural diversity within higher education. Specifically, this study was directed at the system o f higher education o f the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA). The SDA Church is a worldwide religious denomination whose emphasis is on global mission. Under tire leadership of Ellen White (1827-1915), the Church has a history o f service to persons of color, and in recent years the Church adopted policies of support for cultural diversity'. Andrews University was chosen for this study because of its role as the flagship university o f the …

Essays On Cooperative Behaviour And Collective Action., Anindya Bhattacharya Dr. Jan 2002

Essays On Cooperative Behaviour And Collective Action., Anindya Bhattacharya Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This dissertation explores some issues concerning the behaviour of coalitions of individuals in a game theoretic set-up and also studies one aspect of a society facing collective action of the masses. The common feature of the issues explored in the dissertation is that it investigates the properties of stable social states. Chapter 2 introduces a notion of a social state that is unlikely to be displaced by any coalition of agents endowed with a certain notion of rationality and a certain degree of farsightedness and explores the properties of such states. Chapter 3 is also concerned with coalitionally stable social …

Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer From V=0 Of The E(0+G) Ion-Pair State In I2: Collisions With He And Ar, Christopher J. Fecko , '98, Miriam Arak Freedman , '00, Thomas Alex Stephenson Jan 2002

Collision-Induced Electronic Energy Transfer From V=0 Of The E(0+G) Ion-Pair State In I2: Collisions With He And Ar, Christopher J. Fecko , '98, Miriam Arak Freedman , '00, Thomas Alex Stephenson

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The electronic energy transfer pathways that occur following collisions between I-2 in the E ion-pair electronic state (v = 0, J = 55) and He and Ar atoms have been determined. The nearby D, D', and beta ion-pair states are populated, but with relative branching ratios that vary with the rare gas collision partner. In He/I-2 collisions, the D state is preferentially populated, while Ar/I-2 collisions preferentially populate the beta electronic state. Bimolecular rate constants and effective hard sphere collision cross sections have been determined for each channel; the cross sections range from 7.0 +/- 1.0 Angstrom(2) for populating the …

Synchrotron Radiation-Induced X-Ray Emission To Identify Metal Ions In Preparations Of Purified Protein, Thomas Pfister, Huan Feng, Eckard Wimmer, Keith W. Jones Jan 2002

Synchrotron Radiation-Induced X-Ray Emission To Identify Metal Ions In Preparations Of Purified Protein, Thomas Pfister, Huan Feng, Eckard Wimmer, Keith W. Jones

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The suitability of synchrotron radiation-induced X-ray emission (SRIXE) for the detection and identification of metal ions in preparations of purified, soluble proteins was tested. Glutathione S-transferase fused to the proximal zinc finger motif of human transcription factor IIIA or to the cysteine-rich motif of poliovirus protein 2C was expressed in bacteria and purified by affinity chromatography. Aqueous samples containing the purified proteins were analyzed with SRIXE, and trace amounts of zinc and iron were detected. Mutation of the zinc-coordinating residues in the cysteine-rich motif of poliovirus protein 2C resulted in the loss of the zinc-binding ability. Relative quantities of metal …

A New Heavy Ion Abundance Enrichment Pattern In ³He-Rich Solar Particle Events, Glenn M. Mason, Joseph E. Mazur, Joseph R. Dwyer Jan 2002

A New Heavy Ion Abundance Enrichment Pattern In ³He-Rich Solar Particle Events, Glenn M. Mason, Joseph E. Mazur, Joseph R. Dwyer

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We report the first examples of ³He-rich solar energetic particle (SEP) events with heavy ion enrichments that are not ordered generally by mass. A second new feature is the large enrichment of ¹⁴N, the first time large enrichments have been seen for heavy ions lighter than O or Ne. These SEP events were too small and at too low an energy (<500 keV nucleon-1) to have been observed previously. The best observed event, 2001 July 16, had abundance ratios C : N : O : Ne : Mg : Si : S : Ca : Fe of ∼0.8 : 1.0 : ≡ 1 : 0.5 : 0.5 : 2.0 : 2.4 : 0.2 : 0.9, corresponding, respectively, to enhancements over the slow solar wind of ∼1.2 :15 : ≡ 1 : 5. : 3.4 : 12 :49 : 19 : 7. This pattern is incompatible with a gravitational settling enrichment mechanism. The simultaneous large enhancements of ¹⁴N and ²⁸Si, which have identical charge-to-mass ratios for certain ionization states, suggest that selective plasma wave heating plays a key role, as has long been suspected. Enhancement of ¹⁴N implies relatively low temperatures (<1.5 × 10 6 K) since fully stripped ¹⁴N cannot be preferentially heated. Also, the presence of enhanced species such as ¹⁴N and ²⁸Si, along with others with small or no enhancements ( 16)O, ²⁰Ne), may indicate that the plasma waves must operate over a relatively narrow range of frequencies and that the material must be heated while the waves are present.

Effects Of Surface Morphology On Magnetic Properties Of Ni Nanowire Arrays In Self-Ordered Porous Alumina, H. Zeng, Stevem A. Michalski, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer, L. Menon, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay Jan 2002

Effects Of Surface Morphology On Magnetic Properties Of Ni Nanowire Arrays In Self-Ordered Porous Alumina, H. Zeng, Stevem A. Michalski, Roger D. Kirby, David J. Sellmyer, L. Menon, Supriyo Bandyopadhyay

David Sellmyer Publications

Ni nanowire arrays were produced by electrodeposition of Ni into self-assembled porous anodic alumina templates. With different anodization voltages, the wires show different surface morphologies. The temperature dependence of the coercivity and activation volume of wires with regular shape can be explained by thermal activation over an energy barrier with a 3/2 power dependence on the field. The wires with irregular surface morphologies show abnormal temperature dependences of the coercivity and activation volume. Possible mechanisms for these behaviors are discussed.
