Arctic Ocean Physiography, Martin Jakobsson, Arthur Grantz, Yngue Kristoffersen, Ron Macnab
Arctic Ocean Physiography, Martin Jakobsson, Arthur Grantz, Yngue Kristoffersen, Ron Macnab
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
The first order physiographic provinces of the Arctic Ocean has been defined using the recently updated International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) grid model as the main database and a semi-quantitative approach. The first step in our classification of physiographic provinces is an evaluation of seafloor gradients contained in a slope model that was derived from the IBCAO grid. The slope information reveals certain seafloor process-related features, which add to the bathymetric information. Using interactive 3D-visualization, the slope and bathymetric information were simultaneously analyzed and certain slope intervals of the Arctic Ocean seafloor were found to generally characterize …

PETROBRAS (the Brazilian national oil company) built a pipeline to transport crude oil from the Urucu River region to a terminal in the vicinities of Coari, a city located in the right margin of the Solimoes River. The oil is then shipped by tankers to another terminal in Manaus, capital city of the Amazonas state. At the city of Coari, changes in water level between dry and wet seasons reach up to 14 meters. This strong seasonal character of the Amazonian climate gives rise to four distinct scenarios in the annual hydrological cycle: low water, high water, receding water, and …

Fisheries Research Report No. 142 - Identifying The Development Stages Of Preserved Eggs Of Snapper, Pagrus Auratus, From Shark Bay, Western Australia, J. Norriss, Gary Jackson
Fisheries Research Reports
The characteristics used to identify 19 developmental stages of preserved eggs of snapper, Pagrus auratus, collected from Shark Bay, Western Australia, during annual plankton surveys, are described and illustrated. A key is provided to enable the age of each egg stage to be estimated based on sea surface temperature and salinity observed during sampling. This report is intended as a reference for inexperienced staff, to ensure that between-year comparisons of snapper spawning biomass, estimated using the daily egg production method, are based on consistent egg staging and ageing methods.

Fisheries Research Report No. 143 - Methods Used In The Collection, Preparation And Interpretation Of Narrow-Barred Spanish Mackerel (Scomberomorus Commerson) Otoliths For A Study Of Age And Growth In Western Australia, Paul Lewis, M. C. Mackie
Fisheries Research Reports
The narrow-barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) is wide ranging throughout the Indo-West Pacific region where it has been the subject of various age and growth studies. Methods used in these studies have varied considerably and in some cases may have led to misleading conclusions. The purpose of this report, therefore, is to document in detail the methods used in determining the age and growth during a FRDC funded stock assessment of the species in the waters off Western Australia. These methods are considered to optimise the collection, processing, accuracy of microincrement counts, and interpretation of the annuli in both whole …

Poiseuille Advection Of Chemical Reaction Fronts: Eikonal Approximation, R. S. Spangler, Boyd F. Edwards, J. Chem
All Physics Faculty Publications
An eikonal equation including fluid advection is derived from the cubic reaction-diffusion-advection equation, and is used to investigate the speeds and shapes of chemical reaction fronts subject to Poiseuille flow between parallel plates. Although the eikonal equation is usually regarded as valid when the front thickness is small compared to the radius of curvature of the front and to the size of the system, it is also found to be valid when the reaction front is thick with respect to the gap width. This new regime of applicability of the eikonal equation is consistent with its derivation, which requires only …

Physics
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs low-temperature Ge and Si detectors to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their elastic-scattering interactions with nuclei while discriminating against interactions of background particles. For recoil energies above 10 keV, events due to background photons are rejected with >99.9% efficiency, and surface events are rejected with >95% efficiency. The estimate of the background due to neutrons is based primarily on the observation of multiple-scatter events that should all be neutrons. Data selection is determined primarily by examining calibration data and vetoed events. Resulting efficiencies should be accurate to ∼10%. Results of …

The World Wide Web has had a huge influence on the computing field in general as well as simulation in particular (e.g., Web-Based Simulation). A new wave of development based upon XML has started. Two of the most interesting aspects of this development are the Semantic Web and Web Services. This paper examines the synergy between Web service technology and simulation. In one direction, Web service processes can be simulated for the purpose of correcting/improving the design. In the other direction, simulation models/components can be built out of Web services. Work on seamlessly using simulation as a part of Web …
Measuring Surface Chemical Properties Of Soil Using Flow Calorimetry, R. D. Rhue, Chip Appel, Nadine Kabengi
Measuring Surface Chemical Properties Of Soil Using Flow Calorimetry, R. D. Rhue, Chip Appel, Nadine Kabengi
Earth and Soil Sciences
Flow calorimetry, which is ideally suited for measuring reactions occurring at the liquid/solid interface, has been used to study the surface chemistry of many types of solids, but little use of it has been made in the study of surface reactions of soils. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the application of flow calorimetry to the study of two fundamental soil chemical processes, namely cation exchange and phosphate sorption. Surface horizon samples of a Typic Acrorthox and a Typic Tropohumult from Puerto Rico, a strong acid cation exchange resin (Dowex 50W-8), and an amorphous Al(OH)3 were used. …

Heats Of K/Ca And K/Pb Exchange In Two Tropical Soils As Measured By Flow Calorimetry, Chip Appel, Dean Rhue, Lena Ma, Bill Reve
Earth and Soil Sciences
Flow calorimetry can provide useful information about surface chemical reactions in soils that cannot be obtained readily by other methods. When flow calorimetry is conducted over a range of surface coverages, different sorption heats can be calculated to yield information about how binding energies vary with coverage, i.e., surface heterogeneity. The purpose of this study was to determine heats of exchange for K/Ca and K/Pb systems using flow calorimetry and to evaluate the degree of surface heterogeneity with respect to cation exchange. Surface horizon samples from a Typic Acrorthox and Typic Tropohumult from Puerto Rico were used. Lead was adsorbed …

Directed Ortho-Metalation Of Dimethylarylamines, Michael Timmons
Directed Ortho-Metalation Of Dimethylarylamines, Michael Timmons
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Site-specific product(s) from the reaction of benzene derivatives with various reagents is a need of researchers at numerous laboratories, particularly those in the pharmaceutical industry. Such derivatives can be synthesized directly, i.e., by substitution of a proton, using either of two procedures: electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) or directed ortho-metalation (DoM). Directed ortho-metalation (DoM) is an alternative aromatic substitution process initiated by organolithium reagents which provides regiospecific substitution exclusively at the ortho- position (equation). The focus of this study is to find hydrocarbon media that will permit the maximum extent of metalation of several dimethylarylamines. The dimethylamine-containing substituents constitute directing metalation …

Implications Of Mbti In Software Engineering Education, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Implications Of Mbti In Software Engineering Education, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
A number of approaches exist to aid the understanding of individual differences and their effects on teaching and learning. Educators have been using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to understand differences in learning styles and to develop teaching methods that cater for the various personality styles. Inspired by the MBTI, we developed a range of practices for effective teaching and learning in a software engineering course. Our aim is to reach every student, but in different ways, by devising various teaching approaches.
The Role Of Climate In Modern Water Planning And Related Decisions: Nebraska Case Study, Donna L. Woudenberg
The Role Of Climate In Modern Water Planning And Related Decisions: Nebraska Case Study, Donna L. Woudenberg
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
Climate and weather play an integral role in the planning and decision-making processes for those involved in agricultural and natural resource fields. This project was conducted to determine whether climate and weather data are being efficiently and effectively used in these processes.
A survey was mailed to those who work in water-related fields in Nebraska and post-survey interviews were conducted to obtain greater detail. Survey results were analyzed in the following three ways: as a whole; stratified by respondent’s agency; and stratified by the educational background of respondents. It was found that climate and weather data are more likely to …

The Internet, Bank Structure And Small Business Lending, Steven G. Craig, Polly T. Hardee
The Internet, Bank Structure And Small Business Lending, Steven G. Craig, Polly T. Hardee
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
The advent of the Internet has opened many opportunities for bankers to access new customers, increase convenience and expand product ranges in many markets, including that of small businesses. Yet anecdotal evidence reveals that smaller banks are reluctant to employ Internet technology in the small business market for fear of damaging the customer relationship developed through personal contact. These smaller, more simply structured banks tend to specialize in small business lending, possessing a comparative advantage in that market (Craig and Hardee, 2001). This is particularly so in relationship driven credits where personal knowledge of the borrower is paramount over financial …
Optimal Liquidation Of Venture Capital Stakes, Robert Dubil
Optimal Liquidation Of Venture Capital Stakes, Robert Dubil
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
We model the optimal liquidation behavior of a venture capital or non-diversified asset management firm faced with a sale of concentrated security holdings. As the firm?s stake is large, its sales can lead to permanent and temporary price depressions. At the optimum, the institution chooses the liquidation interval to balance the exposure to the market return variance against the impact of its own sales on the realized return. We obtain closed-form solutions for power impact functions uncorrelated with returns. We also consider market impact correlated with the return process, i.e. a case where liquidity evaporates during severe price dislocations.
Some Potential Means For Venture Valuation, Wolfgang Stummer
Some Potential Means For Venture Valuation, Wolfgang Stummer
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
In some modern venture valuation approaches, option pricing theory plays an important role. The aim of this paper is to present some tools and viewpoints which might be helpful for future investigations along this line. We model the value-dynamics Xt of an imbedded underlying X as a non-lognormally-distributed generalization of the geometric Brownian motion. In detail, Xt is supposed to be a solution of a stochastic differential equation of the form with non-constant volatility function ? (t) and Brownian motion Wt . For this, we discuss a certain decision problem concerning the size of the trend function b . Under …

Crab Louse Infestation In Pre-Columbian America, F. M. Rick, G. C. Rocha, K. Dittmar, C. E. A. Coimbra Jr., Karl J. Reinhard, F. Bouchet, L. F. Ferreira, A. Araújo
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Until now, Pthirus pubis infestation in ancient human populations had only been recorded in the Old World. We found crab lice on South American mummified bodies from the Atacama Desert region. Crab louse eggs were found attached to the pubic hairs of a 2,000-yr-old Chilean mummy. Well-preserved adults were found in sediment and clothing from a Peruvian mummy dated 1,000 yr ago. Paleoparasitological evidence expands the knowledge of the distribution of this ectoparasite in ancient populations. As with many other parasites, pubic lice recorded in Andean populations show the antiquity of this parasite in the New World. It is likely …
Analysis Of Integrated Farming Systems In Eastern Nebraska, Lori A. Hoagland
Analysis Of Integrated Farming Systems In Eastern Nebraska, Lori A. Hoagland
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Agroecosystems in the U.S. are beset with social, ecological and environmental problems as large industrial farming methods are edging out small family-sized farms and replacing ecological services provided by biodiversity with synthetic inputs and practices. While many of the benefits of smaller diversified or integrated farming systems are well known, farm producers need a concrete model that shows how integration is possible and with what crops. The objective of this study was to investigate some of these supplemental farm activities, and identify and evaluate whether they were compatible given the time and resource constraints of a typical eastern Nebraska farm. …

On Computing Condensed Frequent Pattern Bases, Jian Pei, Guozhu Dong, Wei Zou, Jiawei Han
On Computing Condensed Frequent Pattern Bases, Jian Pei, Guozhu Dong, Wei Zou, Jiawei Han
Kno.e.sis Publications
Frequent pattern mining has been studied extensively. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of this mining is often limited, since the number of frequent patterns generated is often too large. In many applications it is sufficient to generate and examine only frequent patterns with support frequency in close-enough approximation instead of in full precision. Such a compact but close-enough frequent pattern base is called a condensed frequent patterns-base.
In this paper, we propose and examine several alternatives at the design, representation, and implementation of such condensed frequent pattern-bases. A few algorithms for computing such pattern-bases are proposed. Their effectiveness at pattern …
